If no Telegram session remains, ask your mobile provider to block the compromised SIM and issue a replacement with the same number; then sign in and end the old session. Telegram’s published recovery route depends on either an active Telegram session or control of the registered phone number, not a general identity-document process.

First, identify what you still control
The next safe action depends on three facts: whether Telegram is open somewhere, whether you control the phone number attached to the account, and whether the problem is a stolen SIM, a stolen handset, or an unfamiliar Telegram session. Telegram’s FAQ does not promise a universal recovery route based on identity documents. Its published instructions rely on a logged-in session or the registered number. Telegram’s FAQ on a stolen phone describes that requirement.

Carrier procedures, identity checks and replacement times vary by country and provider; Telegram does not specify those details in its FAQ.

If Telegram is still open on a device
An existing session is your fastest way to stop an intruder. Do not log out of that session until you have changed the account’s security settings and reviewed devices.
Turn on Two-Step Verification
- Open Telegram and go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Two-Step Verification.
- Create a strong password that is different from your email, phone or other account passwords.
- Add a recovery email if Telegram offers the option, and complete the confirmation step.
- Store the password in a secure password manager or another protected method you can retrieve later.
Two-Step Verification requires both the normal Telegram login code and this additional password when a new login is made. Telegram advises protecting the recovery email with a strong password and Two-Step Verification of its own. Its explanation of the feature is in the official FAQ.
Remove devices you do not recognize
- Go to Settings > Devices. Some Telegram versions label the same area Privacy and Security > Active Sessions.
- Compare each listed device, location and recent activity with devices you actually use.
- End any session you do not recognize, including one created while your account was being misused.
Telegram’s unrecognized-device notice tells users: “If this wasn’t you, you can go to Settings > Devices and terminate that session.” The wording appears in Telegram’s official interface text.

If someone could receive calls or SMS for your number, contact your mobile provider and ask it to block the old SIM and issue a replacement with the same number. This prevents the attacker from continuing to receive SMS-based login codes. If your handset was stolen but the SIM and number remain under your control, use the carrier’s blocking process and change the device lock as well.

Change your Telegram number only from a trusted session
If you are permanently moving to a new number, change it inside Telegram while you are still logged in: open Settings, tap your phone number, choose Change Number, and follow the confirmation prompts. Keep the account attached to a current number you control; Telegram warns that SMS can remain a fallback for access.
If no Telegram session remains open
Telegram’s stated route is to recover the phone number first. Contact your mobile provider, report the compromised or stolen SIM, ask for it to be blocked, and request a replacement SIM with the same number. The exact documents, fees and waiting period are provider- and location-specific.
- Have the carrier suspend the old SIM or eSIM so it cannot receive further codes.
- Obtain and activate the replacement with the original number.
- Install Telegram on a trusted device and sign in with that number.
- After access is restored, open Settings > Devices (or Privacy and Security > Active Sessions) and terminate the session on the old or compromised device.
- Enable Two-Step Verification before using the account normally.
If the provider cannot return the number to you, Telegram’s published FAQ does not describe an alternative identity-document recovery method. Ask the provider what number-recovery options exist before treating the Telegram account as recoverable.
When the login code seems missing
Telegram may send a recent login code inside Telegram on another connected device instead of sending it by SMS. Check every phone, tablet and computer where you might still be signed in, including devices you rarely use. Do not repeatedly request codes until you have checked those sessions.

If no connected device contains the code, verify that the replacement SIM is active, can receive SMS and is attached to the exact number used by the account. A code sent to a different or recently changed number will not restore the original account.
When an unfamiliar device appears
An unexpected device entry is evidence that a new Telegram session exists, but it does not by itself reveal who created it. From a session you trust, open Settings > Devices, select the unfamiliar entry and terminate it. Then enable Two-Step Verification so a future login requires the additional password as well as the login code.
Lock down the account after recovery
Protect the recovery email
The recovery email can help you regain access if you forget the Two-Step Verification password. Use an address you control, a unique password and that provider’s own two-factor protection. Anyone who controls the email may be able to interfere with recovery.

Add a strong local app passcode
In Telegram’s privacy and security settings, set a passcode lock for the app. Use a code that is not the same as your phone unlock code when possible, and enable the shortest automatic-lock interval that fits your use. This protects an already-unlocked phone from someone who picks it up.

Consider a passkey
Telegram describes passkeys as an additional sign-in method that uses a device PIN or biometric such as a fingerprint or face scan. A password manager can back up a passkey. Passkeys supplement, rather than replace, control of the phone number, so keep the account associated with a current number you control. Telegram explains passkeys and login security in its FAQ.
Review the account for changes
- Check your profile name, photo, username and bio for edits you did not make.
- Review recent chats, saved messages and groups for sent messages or new memberships you do not recognize.
- Warn close contacts through another channel if messages were sent while the account was compromised.
- Remove bots, connected websites or other integrations you did not authorize.
These checks do not recover an account by themselves; they help contain impersonation and identify damage after access is secure.

If you cannot log in, use Telegram’s official login-problem form linked from its FAQ and support pages. When you can open Telegram, use Settings > Ask a question. Telegram says this in-app support is provided by volunteers.
Telegram identifies @smstelegram as its official login-help account and says it has no other official social-media support accounts. Treat any unsolicited direct message, email or social account offering recovery as suspicious. Never send a login code, Two-Step Verification password, recovery-email code or passkey approval to a stranger. Genuine support should not need you to disclose a one-time login code.
Common traps and how to avoid them
Waiting for Telegram to verify your identity
Telegram’s published guidance does not promise recovery from a passport, selfie or other identity document. Start with the phone number or an existing session instead of paying a person who claims to have a special identity-verification route.
Deleting the app before securing the session
Uninstalling Telegram from your phone does not terminate sessions on other devices. If a trusted session remains, use it to change security settings and end unknown sessions before removing the app.
Assuming a new SIM automatically ends the attacker’s session
A replacement SIM restores control of the number, but it does not by itself remove an already logged-in Telegram device. Sign in and explicitly terminate the old session from Devices.

A Two-Step Verification password reused elsewhere can be exposed through another breach. Create a unique password and protect the recovery email separately.
A practical recovery checklist
- Identify whether any Telegram device is still logged in.
- If yes, enable Two-Step Verification before logging out.
- Review Settings > Devices and terminate every session you do not recognize.
- Ask your mobile provider to block a compromised SIM and issue a replacement with the same number.
- If no session remains, regain the number first, then sign in and end the old session.
- Check other connected devices when a code does not arrive by SMS.
- Protect the recovery email and set a strong local app passcode.
- Consider a passkey backed up by a password manager.
- Use only Telegram’s in-app support, official login form or the identified @smstelegram account.
- Do not disclose login codes or passwords to unsolicited helpers.
What Telegram’s guidance can—and cannot—tell you
The official instructions explain the account-level actions: preserve an existing session, regain the registered number through your carrier, terminate unknown sessions and add stronger authentication. They cannot determine what an attacker changed in a particular account, whether your provider will return a number, or which identity checks your carrier will demand. Those questions must be handled by the mobile provider or by Telegram through its official support channels.
