If your stock order is rejected or still appears pending, check its details and ask your brokerage to confirm its live status before submitting another order. Find out whether any shares filled and whether a cancellation was accepted: a replacement order can create a duplicate trade if the first order is still active or has already executed. The right next step depends on the order type, trading session, and your broker’s account-specific records.
Start by checking the order record
Sign in to the brokerage account where you placed the order and open its order activity, order history, or equivalent screen. Labels differ among firms, so use the information shown in your account rather than assuming a status word or code has the same meaning everywhere.

Record the details that will help you and the broker identify the order:
- Stock symbol and whether you placed a buy or sell order.
- Quantity and order type, such as market or limit.
- Limit price, if one was specified, and time in force.
- Submission time and the status currently displayed.
- Any messages, rejection explanation, fill details, or cancellation request associated with it.
If the screen is unclear, use the brokerage’s official support channel to verify the account-specific status. Do not infer that an order failed just because a confirmation is missing or a status has not changed.

Why “pending” does not settle what happened
A pending label by itself does not tell you whether an order is active, partially filled, awaiting processing, or simply awaiting a status update. Status names and how quickly they refresh are firm-specific. Ask the broker to confirm whether the order was received, rejected, routed, partially filled, fully filled, or remains active.
Before you try to cancel or replace it, ask whether any shares have executed and whether the order is still open. If you requested cancellation, confirm that the cancellation was accepted and processed; sending a cancel request is not the same as knowing the order was canceled. The SEC advises investors to verify execution and cancellation before placing another trade. FINRA has also described how delayed trade reports and an unprocessed cancellation can result in duplicate executions. SEC Investor.gov and FINRA explain these risks in their investor guidance.
What a rejection means—and what to ask next
A rejection means the brokerage did not accept or carry out the order as submitted, but the reason must come from the firm’s record for that order. There is no universal rejection code or public checklist that identifies the cause for every brokerage, account, stock, and order type. Do not treat a general explanation as a diagnosis of your particular order.

Open any rejection message attached to the order and ask the broker to explain it in plain language. Useful questions include whether the order was rejected before routing or by an execution venue, what specific rule or account condition applied, and whether the order can be submitted again as written. If the firm identifies a detail to correct, verify the change and the new order’s terms before you submit anything.
Ask about firm-specific restrictions that may apply to the account, security, order type, or trading session. The public investor guidance does not establish one universal set of rejection causes or a universal deadline for a firm to answer support requests; the brokerage must clarify the applicable rule and its account record.
How order type affects a delay
Order type changes what you are asking the broker to do. A market order generally seeks prompt execution at the best available price, but it does not guarantee the price. A limit order sets a price boundary, which can leave it unfilled if the market does not reach that price. Neither label alone explains a particular delay; check the order’s status with the firm.

| Order type | What it prioritizes | Why it might not produce the result you expect |
|---|---|---|
| Market | Generally seeks prompt execution at the best available price. | The execution price is not guaranteed and may differ from the last-traded price. “Market” does not promise a specific price or a fixed completion time. |
| Limit | Controls the price boundary: a buy executes only at the limit price or lower; a sell executes only at the limit price or higher. | The order may remain open if the market does not reach the specified price. Reaching a displayed price does not, by itself, establish whether your order filled; check with the broker. |
Brokerages can differ in the order types and instructions they offer. For current descriptions of these order types and the firm-specific caveat, see the SEC’s Understanding Order Types guidance, updated August 18, 2026.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy execution can take time
Submitting an order does not connect you directly to an exchange. The order travels through the brokerage and is routed to a market or another execution venue; prices can move during that process. The SEC states: “SEC regulations do not require a trade to be executed within a set period of time.” That means there is no general regulatory promise that every order will execute instantly or within a particular number of minutes. See the SEC’s Executing an Order explanation for more on routing and execution.
Trading session matters, too. Extended-hours sessions can differ from regular trading in order acceptance, which securities are available, and liquidity. Many firms accept only limit orders in those sessions, but policies vary. Check the brokerage’s rules for the session and security involved rather than assuming an order eligible during regular hours will work the same way outside them. The SEC’s Extended-Hours Trading: Investor Bulletin describes these differences.

Decide whether to wait, cancel, or replace
Make this choice only after you know the original order’s status. The decision involves both the price control you want and the likelihood and timing of execution; it is not a reason to change an order without understanding its current state.
- If the broker confirms the order is active: Ask whether it remains eligible in the current session and what its existing terms are. If it is a limit order, compare the limit with your intended price boundary; do not assume it will fill simply because time has passed.
- If you want the order stopped: Submit a cancellation request through the brokerage’s supported process, then confirm with the firm that cancellation succeeded. Until that is confirmed, do not treat the original order as safely replaced.
- If the broker confirms the order was rejected or canceled: Decide whether to submit a new order only after reviewing its symbol, side, quantity, order type, price terms, and session. A new order is a new instruction, not a continuation of the old one.
- If any portion filled: Ask for the filled quantity and whether the unfilled portion remains active. Understand both pieces before deciding whether any further action is needed.
When comparing market and limit instructions, weigh a market order’s general priority for prompt execution against its lack of a guaranteed price, and a limit order’s price boundary against the possibility of no fill. If the order is for an extended-hours session, separately confirm that the brokerage accepts that order type and that the security is eligible then.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Contact the brokerage with specific questions
Use the brokerage’s official contact method and have the order details available. A precise question is more useful than asking only why the order is “stuck.” You can say: “Please confirm whether order [identify it by the details in your account] was received, rejected, routed, partially filled, or is still active. If I requested cancellation, was it accepted and processed? If it was rejected, what was the specific reason?” Put any variable order details in your own words when speaking with the firm.
Best Value
Depending on the response, also ask:
- Whether a reported fill is complete or partial, and what quantity was executed.
- Whether a cancel request is still pending or has been completed.
- Which trading-session rules and order types apply to that security.
- Whether an account-specific restriction or order detail needs attention.
- How to obtain the order’s execution or rejection details in writing.
Ask the representative to distinguish what the firm knows about the order from what is still pending. Save the response and note when you contacted the firm. There is no general service-response deadline established by the cited public guidance.
Check the confirmation if the trade occurred
If the order executed, review the trade confirmation rather than relying only on a screen notification. Check that the transaction matches what you intended and what the brokerage reports. The SEC’s How to Read Confirmation Statements guidance advises investors to contact the broker-dealer promptly about questions or errors.
If the confirmation appears incorrect or the transaction was unauthorized, contact the firm immediately. Keep copies of the order record, timestamps, messages, cancellation requests, support responses, and confirmation while the firm investigates. Those records help you describe the sequence without relying on memory.

Escalate an unresolved problem
If you cannot resolve an order-handling, execution, or confirmation issue with the brokerage, the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Assistance accepts investor complaints about these subjects. The SEC’s Investor Complaints information, updated September 8, 2026, explains the complaint route and other avenues an investor may consider. A complaint does not guarantee a particular result or an investigation update.
When describing the issue, provide a concise timeline and the records relevant to it: the submitted order terms, displayed statuses, any reported fills, cancellation attempts, the confirmation, and the brokerage’s responses. Keep the focus on what the firm recorded and what remains disputed.
What not to assume
- A missing confirmation or “pending” display does not prove the order failed or succeeded.
- A cancel request does not prove cancellation succeeded.
- A market order does not guarantee a particular execution price or a fixed completion time.
- A limit order may remain unfilled even if the price boundary suits your instruction.
- A general explanation of order rules cannot identify the reason for your specific rejection; the brokerage’s account-specific records are decisive.
