Keep your physical driver’s license or state ID, check your state DMV for an official mobile-ID program, and do not treat a photograph or scan as an equivalent credential.
For domestic air travel, a U.S. passport holder may have another option: Apple’s passport-based Digital ID. It works only at participating TSA checkpoints, does not replace the physical passport, and cannot be used for international travel or border crossings. Verify acceptance before relying on it.

First, verify whether your state is actually supported
Apple’s availability changes as jurisdictions launch or update their programs. As of October 13, 2026, Apple’s live ID in Wallet list includes these jurisdictions for driver’s licenses or state IDs:

The list is not a permanent count or a promise that every agency in a listed jurisdiction accepts a Wallet credential. Open the current Apple list and the Add to Wallet flow on your iPhone before assuming your state has launched. A state may be announced, limited to certain credentials, or still unavailable to particular residents while implementation continues.

What an unsupported state means
Apple’s state-ID feature requires the license or ID to be issued by a participating state or territory. If your issuing jurisdiction does not appear in the current list, Wallet cannot create an official digital copy of that credential. You cannot work around the restriction by photographing the card, scanning its barcode, or saving an image in Photos. Those files lack the verification and data-sharing controls of an issuer-approved mobile ID, and an agency or business can reject them.
Your options when the state license cannot be added
Option 1: Keep using the physical credential
Your physical driver’s license or state ID remains the dependable choice for driving, age checks, government offices, banks, rentals, and businesses that do not accept mobile credentials. Keep it accessible even if you later add another digital ID. Virginia’s DMV, for example, tells residents to continue carrying physical identification as a backup, particularly when driving. That is Virginia guidance, not a universal statement of every state’s law, so check your own DMV for local requirements.
Option 2: Check your DMV for a separate mobile-ID program
Some states may offer an official app, mobile credential, or announced rollout outside Apple Wallet. Start with your DMV’s website or customer-service office and look for terms such as “mobile driver’s license,” “mobile ID,” or “digital identity.” Confirm all of the following before enrolling:
- The program is issued or authorized by your state, not a private app that merely stores a photo.
- The agencies and businesses that accept it are identified by the DMV.
- Whether you must still carry the physical card while driving or traveling.
- Which phones, operating systems, identity checks, and fees apply.
- How to replace the credential if your phone is lost, reset, or offline.
Do not infer that a state app is accepted at TSA, by police, or by an age-verification business unless that recipient says so. Acceptance is controlled by the issuing authority and the organization checking your identity.

Option 3: Use Apple’s passport-based Digital ID if you qualify
A person with a valid U.S. passport may be able to create a separate Digital ID in Wallet. This is not a digital driver’s license and does not depend on whether the person’s state participates in Apple’s state-ID program. Apple describes it for identity verification at participating TSA checkpoints for domestic travel.
The passport Digital ID has strict limits. It is not a replacement for the physical passport, cannot be used for international travel, and cannot be used to cross a border instead of presenting a U.S. passport. A checkpoint, airline, venue, or business may also decline it even when the technology is available.
How to set up a passport-based Digital ID
Apple’s setup process verifies the passport and your identity rather than importing a simple image. The labels and requirements can change, so follow the current Wallet prompts on your device.
- Open the Wallet app and choose the option to add a Digital ID based on a U.S. passport.
- Scan the photo page of your passport when prompted.
- Use the iPhone to read the passport’s embedded chip. Hold the phone against the passport and keep both still until the read completes.
- Take the requested selfie and complete the facial or head movements used for identity verification.
- Approve the final setup with the on-screen security steps. When a recipient requests information later, review what will be shared and authorize it with Face ID or Touch ID.
Apple says passport information used to create the Digital ID is stored on the device. Apple also says it cannot see when or where you present the ID or what information you share. Those are Apple’s stated privacy characteristics; they do not mean every recipient has identical data-handling practices, so read the disclosure shown at the point of use.

Device requirements
Apple’s support documentation lists different hardware and software requirements for state IDs and passport Digital ID. Requirements can change with new releases; check the support page and the Wallet screen before troubleshooting an installation.

Meeting the device requirement does not create eligibility. The issuer must participate, your document must pass verification, and the recipient must accept the credential.
Using a Wallet ID for a flight
TSA’s current accepted-ID list is the authority for checkpoint documents. Adult passengers need valid identification, and since May 7, 2025, non-REAL-ID-compliant state driver’s licenses and IDs have not been accepted at TSA checkpoints. A REAL ID-compliant state credential or another document on TSA’s list, such as a U.S. passport or passport card, is the safer plan when you do not know whether a digital option will work.

Check three things before leaving for the airport
- Confirm that your state credential is REAL ID compliant, or select another TSA-accepted document.
- Check the specific airport and checkpoint for mobile-ID acceptance. Apple’s passport Digital ID is described for participating checkpoints, not every checkpoint.
- Carry a physical fallback, preferably the physical passport, passport card, or accepted state credential you are relying on. A dead phone, damaged screen, connectivity issue, verification failure, or a checkpoint change can leave a digital-only traveler without usable identification.
Apple’s November 12, 2025 announcement described the passport Digital ID rollout as beta and said it was available at participating TSA checkpoints in more than 250 U.S. airports at that time. That was an announcement-time rollout figure, not a current guarantee or a total number of airports today. Recheck TSA and Apple immediately before travel.

Where Wallet credentials can and cannot be used
Apple describes ID in Wallet for selected businesses, venues, apps, and TSA checkpoints. “In Wallet” does not mean “accepted everywhere a plastic card is accepted.” Before presenting it, ask the receiving organization whether it accepts Apple’s credential and which fields it needs.
- Driving: Keep the physical license with you and follow your state’s rules. A phone credential may not satisfy a roadside officer or a rental-car counter.
- Age verification: Ask the retailer, venue, or app whether it accepts Wallet ID. Some recipients may support only particular implementations.
- Government services: Use the identification format the agency specifies; do not assume a state launch automatically covers every office.
- Air travel: Confirm the individual TSA checkpoint, not merely the airport name, and carry a physical fallback.
Troubleshooting common failure points
Your state appears on an old list but not in Wallet
Older articles and launch announcements become stale. Update iOS, open the current Add ID flow, and verify the live Apple list. If the state is absent, contact the DMV rather than attempting to add a card manually.
The add process rejects your document
Make sure the document is current, the name and details match your identity information, the phone meets Apple’s current requirements, and the passport chip can be read without a case or movement. Use good lighting for the selfie and complete the requested head movements. Repeated failures should be handled through Apple’s support channel or the issuing authority; do not upload a photo to an unrelated app claiming to create an official ID.

Ask for the checkpoint’s current procedure, but be prepared to present the physical passport or another TSA-accepted credential. A beta or participating rollout can vary by lane, staffing, equipment, or operational status.
Your phone is unavailable
A Wallet credential cannot help if the phone is lost, out of power, damaged, locked, or unable to complete biometric verification. Keep the physical document available, and never surrender it merely because a digital credential was added.
A simple decision path
- Check Apple’s live state list. If your issuing jurisdiction is listed and your document qualifies, follow Wallet’s enrollment prompts. If it is not listed, continue with the physical credential.
- Ask your DMV about an official alternative. Treat any state app as a separate program and verify its accepted locations and backup rules.
- Decide whether you have a U.S. passport. If yes, consider passport Digital ID for domestic TSA use only after checking device eligibility and checkpoint acceptance.
- Match the document to the task. For flights, consult TSA’s current list and use a REAL ID-compliant credential or another accepted document. For driving, border crossing, and uncertain business use, carry the physical document.
- Recheck before each trip. State launches, software requirements, TSA procedures, and participating checkpoints can change.
What the Virginia launch illustrates
Virginia provides a useful example of how a state rollout is described without proving universal acceptance. Virginia Secretary of Transportation Nick Donohue said, “The introduction of ID in Apple Wallet to Virginians marks a major moment of innovation for the Commonwealth, putting Virginians ahead of the curve when it comes to both technology and protecting personal information.” That statement concerns Virginia’s launch; it is not evidence that every state offers the feature or that a Wallet credential legally replaces a physical license everywhere.
The practical rule is straightforward: an unsupported state has no Apple Wallet driver’s-license workaround. Keep the physical ID, use an official DMV alternative if one exists, and treat passport Digital ID as a narrowly scoped domestic-travel option rather than a universal replacement for government documents.
