What to Do If Your SonicWall Firewall May Have Been Compromised

Do not factory-reset or reboot first. If you see unauthorized administrator accounts, changed rules, unfamiliar logins, unexpected restarts, or unusual VPN activity, preserve logs, involve your incident-response lead or a qualified SonicWall professional, and contain internet exposure in a coordinated way. Then determine whether you are investigating direct access to the appliance or exposure of a configuration backup in SonicWall’s cloud service. Those are related but different events.

SonicWall’s September 2025 cloud-backup disclosure requires a separate MySonicWall check for customers who used that service. It does not, by itself, prove that an individual firewall was breached.

First: stabilize the situation without destroying evidence

Bring in the right people

Notify your organization’s incident-response lead, managed security provider, or a qualified incident-response professional immediately when compromise is plausible. Treat these as investigation signals, not conclusive proof:

  • An administrator account, role, or MFA/TOTP enrollment that nobody recognizes.
  • Firewall, NAT, VPN, DNS, routing, or access-control changes with no approved change record.
  • Logins from unexpected locations, times, or source addresses.
  • Unexplained reboots, freezes, performance changes, or configuration exports.
  • Unexpected VPN sessions, new tunnel peers, or unusual traffic through an allowed service.
  • A vendor, monitoring system, or security tool reporting suspicious activity.

CISA’s incident-response guidance recommends coordinated isolation, out-of-band communications, collection of relevant logs and observables, and preservation of volatile or short-retention evidence. Use a separate trusted communication channel if the network itself may be monitored.

Collect evidence before changing the appliance

Do not make a generic factory reset, reimage, or power cycle your first move. Those actions can erase useful evidence and may destroy the only record of an attacker’s changes. Capture the current time, suspected event times, source addresses, affected interfaces, and who discovered the issue. Preserve exported configuration files and screenshots in a controlled location, and record who collected each item.

SonicWall’s diagnostic guidance identifies these potentially useful artifacts:

  • Tech Support Report
  • System, firewall, trace, and console logs
  • Firewall settings and relevant access-rule exports
  • Core dumps, when available

On SonicOS 7, the documented paths are Device → Diagnostics → Tech Support Report and Monitor → Logs → System Logs; event logs can be exported as CSV. Menus differ by SonicOS release and model, so do not assume those paths apply unchanged to every unit. If a firewall is freezing, SonicWall advises trying console or SSH log export before rebooting where possible. In a high-availability pair, collect the listed files from both the primary and secondary units.

Separate an appliance compromise from the cloud-backup incident

The response depends on what evidence you have. Patching a vulnerability does not establish that an attacker never accessed the device, and seeing your serial number in a cloud-backup notice does not prove that the appliance itself was breached.

Situation What it means Immediate focus
Direct suspected device compromise There are signs of unauthorized access or configuration activity on a particular firewall. Preserve device evidence, coordinate containment, identify the exact model and firmware, investigate persistence, and remediate with incident-response support.
Cloud-backup exposure A configuration backup stored in SonicWall’s cloud service may have been accessed. Check the final MySonicWall issue list, determine the backup date and enabled services, then rotate every credential that could have been present.

You can face both situations at once. Handle the cloud-backup check even when local logs show no obvious intrusion, and continue investigating a suspected appliance compromise even after credentials have been rotated.

Check the exact model, firmware, and current advisories

Record the product generation and model, SonicOS version, whether management or VPN services are reachable from the internet, and whether the unit remains supported. Check SonicWall’s current Support Notices and PSIRT advisories, matching the exact model and firmware rather than relying on a product-family name.

The December 18, 2025 improper-access-control notice

SonicWall’s dated notice describes an improper-access-control vulnerability affecting listed Gen 5 and Gen 6 hardware and Gen 7 devices running SonicOS 7.0.1-5035 and earlier. It recommends restricting firewall management and SSLVPN to trusted sources, or disabling internet access to those services, and applying the fixed firmware identified in the live advisory. The fixed-build table and end-of-life coverage can change; verify the current notice before selecting an upgrade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For that advisory, SonicWall also tells locally managed SSLVPN users on Gen 5 and Gen 6 to update passwords and recommends MFA for SSLVPN users. Those steps address the advisory’s risk; they are not proof that your firewall was accessed and do not replace a broader credential review after a confirmed incident.

If your device appears in the MySonicWall cloud-backup notice

Use the portal’s final device list

SonicWall published the cloud-backup incident notice on September 17, 2025 and last updated it October 28, 2025. SonicWall says its investigation with Mandiant confirmed unauthorized access to firewall configuration backup files for customers who used the cloud-backup service.

  1. Sign in to MySonicWall.
  2. Open Product Management → Issue List.
  3. Review every listed serial number, its priority, the Last Download Date, and Known Impacted Services.
  4. Prioritize devices marked Active – High Priority, then those marked Active – Lower Priority.
  5. Continue checking the list because SonicWall says it can be updated.

SonicWall defines the categories this way:

Portal status Meaning in the notice How to act
Active – High Priority An internet-facing service is enabled. Contain exposure and rotate applicable credentials first.
Active – Lower Priority The listed device is active but does not have the internet-facing services used for the high-priority classification. Complete the same credential review, after high-priority units.
Inactive The device has not pinged home for 90 days. Investigate its last known use and rotate credentials if it was connected or its secrets were reused elsewhere.

Do not treat Known Impacted Services as a complete inventory. SonicWall instructs customers to review every service that had credentials enabled at or before the backup date for each serial number.

Understand what an exposed configuration contains

SonicWall says exported EXP configurations contain configuration details and secrets. General configuration content is encoded rather than encrypted; credentials and secrets receive additional encryption—AES-256 on Gen 7 and newer, and 3DES on Gen 6. Encryption does not make the event irrelevant: possession of the files can increase targeted-attack risk. It also does not establish that every credential was available in plaintext or that anyone used it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SonicWall provides an online configuration-analysis tool and an offline Credentials Reset Tool. Treat these as remediation aids, not independent forensic proof that a firewall is clean. If the portal list is incomplete, changes, or does not match your records, keep monitoring the notice and open a support case.

  • Handles up to 1.25 million concurrent connections to support sustained growth in bandwidth and devices.

Contain access before rotating secrets

Credential changes are safer after you have reduced the ways an attacker could reuse an old password or token. SonicWall’s Essential Credential Reset guidance starts with containment:

  • Restrict or disable HTTP/HTTPS and SSH management over the WAN.
  • Restrict or disable SSLVPN, IPsec VPN, and SNMP exposure from untrusted networks.
  • Review inbound WAN rules and NAT policies that publish internal services; disable anything not required.
  • Limit management to trusted source addresses or an out-of-band administration network.
  • Document each change and preserve the pre-change evidence.

Exact controls and menu names vary by SonicOS release and management arrangement. Coordinate changes with the person responsible for remote access so you do not lock out responders or disconnect a critical site without a recovery path.

Rotate every credential that applies to your configuration

Do not change only the primary administrator password. Use the features actually enabled on the affected firewall and update the corresponding peer or service at the same time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Credential or secret Where it can matter Dependency to update
Local administrator and user passwords Management and user authentication Users, password stores, and documented emergency accounts
TOTP or other MFA enrollment Local users and remote access Re-enroll affected users and remove unknown authenticators
LDAP bind credentials Directory lookups and authentication Directory service account and any applications sharing it
RADIUS or TACACS+ shared secrets Centralized administrator or user authentication Every configured authentication server
IPsec pre-shared keys Site-to-site and client VPN tunnels Both ends of every peer tunnel
L2TP, PPPoE, or PPTP credentials WAN or remote-access connections Carrier, concentrator, or client configuration
SNMPv3 credentials Monitoring and management Monitoring platforms and polling definitions
Dynamic DNS credentials Hostname updates Dynamic-DNS provider account
Cloud, API, routing, AWS, CSE, SSO, email, logging, automation, and wireless keys Optional features enabled on the unit The specific external service, peer, or integration

SonicWall warns that missed dependencies can interrupt internet access, VPNs, authentication, or log and alert forwarding. Make a credential inventory from the configuration and operational documentation, then test each dependent service after its secret changes. Keep old secrets disabled rather than merely leaving them available as a fallback.

Use the optional access restriction for local accounts carefully

SonicWall documents a Restrict access until password is changed option in firmware 6.5.5.1 and later for qualifying local, non-domain accounts. Depending on the selected mode, it can block remote access or all access except console, with listed management exceptions.

This control does not apply to externally authenticated accounts and does not prevent SSO sessions. It is a useful containment measure when it matches your account design, but it is not a universal incident-response switch. Confirm console access and an administrator recovery path before enabling it.

Recover only after scope and persistence are understood

  1. Have the incident responder establish which accounts, rules, services, files, and time periods are affected.
  2. Remove unauthorized accounts, rules, objects, certificates, VPN peers, scheduled actions, and other persistence identified during the investigation.
  3. Apply the supported firmware that matches the model and the current SonicWall advisory.
  4. Restore a known-good configuration only after validating that it predates the suspected compromise and does not reintroduce exposed secrets.
  5. Rotate applicable credentials and update every peer or external service.
  6. Re-enable only the services required for business operations, with trusted-source restrictions and MFA where supported.
  7. Monitor administrator logins, configuration changes, VPN sessions, WAN exposure, and outbound connections for renewed activity.

The available guidance does not establish one universal reset, reimage, or replacement rule for every SonicWall model. Make that decision with incident responders and model-specific vendor guidance. A firewall that is patched is not automatically an uncompromised firewall.

When to escalate to SonicWall support

Open a SonicWall support case when you need help interpreting the portal list, selecting a supported firmware, using the configuration-analysis or credential-reset tools, or troubleshooting an upgrade. SonicWall lists web cases for non-urgent matters, chat assistance, and phone support for immediate critical issues; use the current official support page for regional contact methods.

For organizations without internal forensic capacity, a qualified incident-response or SonicWall partner service can help preserve evidence, determine scope, and coordinate recovery. Confirm the provider’s availability, credentials, and terms before engaging it.

After recovery: reduce the next opportunity

  • Keep management interfaces off the public internet whenever operationally possible.
  • Restrict SSLVPN and other remote services to known source ranges or a secure access path.
  • Require MFA for remote access and administrative accounts.
  • Review WAN rules, NAT publications, VPN peers, and administrator lists on a scheduled basis.
  • Forward logs to a protected system with retention longer than the firewall’s local buffer.
  • Record firmware versions, support status, dependencies, and emergency console procedures.
  • Recheck SonicWall notices and the MySonicWall portal when the vendor updates an incident or advisory.
