Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Act quickly, but do not erase evidence. Open your camera provider’s app or type its known website address yourself, change the camera-account password to a unique one, revoke other sessions and unfamiliar users where possible, secure the linked email account, and turn on two-factor authentication. Then update the camera and app, secure the router, and disable remote viewing or power down the camera if someone may still be watching. Account theft, a vulnerable camera, and an exposed home network can coexist, so one password change may not close every route.
Start with a trusted check and immediate containment
Unexpected sign-in alerts, changed account details, unfamiliar viewers or devices, or camera activity you did not initiate justify an investigation. Do not use an unsolicited “account recovery” link in an email or message. Launch the provider’s official app or manually enter its known web address. Google’s account guidance treats unfamiliar signed-in devices and altered security settings as warning signs, while the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) notes that live feeds or images can, in rare cases, be viewed by unauthorized people (Google Account Help; NCSC guidance).

If there is an ongoing privacy or safety risk, use the provider’s setting to disable remote viewing. If that control is unavailable, disconnect or power down the camera only if doing so is safe and will not put anyone at risk. A powered-down camera may stop new monitoring, but it can also stop recording, so consider the evidence implications described below.

| Situation | Do this now | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Still signed in | Change the account password; terminate other sessions; remove unknown users, viewers and connected applications; verify recovery details; enable two-factor authentication. | A password change does not necessarily invalidate every existing session. Look for a separate “sign out all” or session-revocation control. |
| Locked out | Use only the provider’s official recovery flow, then contact support through its official contact page if recovery fails or unfamiliar access remains. | Recovery options, identity checks and access-history tools differ by provider. |
Change credentials and revoke access
- Set a long, unique password that you have not used on email, shopping, social-media or any other service. A reused password can let an attacker return after you secure the camera account.
- Open the account’s security or session page and terminate every session you do not recognize. If the service offers “sign out all devices,” use it and sign back in only on trusted devices.
- Review owner, administrator, family-sharing and viewer lists. Remove unfamiliar people and downgrade or delete access that is no longer needed.
- Inspect connected apps, integrations and automation services. Revoke anything you did not authorize, then reconnect legitimate integrations from their official settings.
- Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) if the camera service provides it. Prefer an authenticator app or security key when supported; availability and enrollment methods vary.
As a concrete provider example, Ajax’s support instructions (updated December 4, 2024) direct users to terminate other sessions, change the password, enable 2FA and contact support when those controls are unavailable (Ajax Systems support). Treat that sequence as an example, not a universal menu path.
If recovery fails
Use the provider’s official recovery form, not a search-ad phone number or a link supplied by the suspected intruder. Tell support that the account, live feed or recordings may have been accessed without authorization. Ask whether they can suspend remote access, remove unknown users, invalidate sessions and preserve relevant login or access records. Do not assume the provider keeps a complete viewer history or can restore deleted footage.
Secure the email account and reused passwords
The email account attached to camera recovery is often the quickest way back into the camera service. If its password was reused, or if the mailbox shows suspicious activity, change it from the provider’s official site. Review recovery email addresses, phone numbers, signed-in devices, app passwords and connected applications; remove anything unfamiliar. Enable 2FA on the email account as well. Google advises changing reused passwords, reviewing devices and recovery information, and enabling 2-Step Verification (Google’s compromised-account guidance). The FTC gives similar recovery advice, while noting that exact controls are provider-specific (FTC account-recovery guidance).

Change any other account that shared the exposed password. Do not store the new credentials in a browser profile or password manager that an intruder can still access; first secure that device and sign out of untrusted sessions.
Work out whether the problem is the account, device, network or all three
A camera feed can be exposed through stolen account credentials, outdated device software, a compromised router or an unsafe sharing configuration. Use this split to avoid stopping after the first fix.
| Access layer | Clues | Controls to check |
|---|---|---|
| Account | Unknown sign-ins, changed recovery details, unfamiliar viewers or connected apps. | Password, session list, user permissions, recovery information and 2FA. |
| Camera and app | Default or reused device password, obsolete firmware, unexpected settings or an untrusted companion app. | Firmware version, app updates, device password and factory-default configuration. |
| Home network | Router is unsupported, uses weak Wi-Fi protection, has unknown administrators or exposes management services to the internet. | Router firmware, administrator password, Wi-Fi encryption, remote administration and network segmentation. |
Reduce camera and router exposure
Update the camera and app
Install firmware updates for the camera and updates for its companion app from the manufacturer’s official channels. Change any default camera password and any password reused elsewhere. The NCSC specifically recommends replacing default passwords and keeping software updated (NCSC smart-camera guidance).

Harden the router
Install available router updates, replace the router administrator password, remove unknown administrator accounts and disable internet-facing management unless you genuinely need it. Use WPA3 or WPA2 encryption for Wi-Fi. The FTC recommends router updates, encryption and 2FA where available, and says a separate network for cameras can limit the impact of a compromise (FTC home-camera security guidance). A replacement router is justified only when existing hardware no longer receives updates or cannot provide the security settings you need.

Remote viewing increases convenience and exposure. If you never view cameras away from home, disable the internet-based viewing feature in the camera or router settings. The NCSC recommends disabling remote viewing when it is not needed (NCSC guidance). Check the product manual because the switch may be labelled remote access, cloud viewing, away mode or a similar term.
Review permissions rather than sharing one login
Use individual viewer accounts and the least privilege the product allows. The FTC recommends choosing cameras with permission levels that let an owner control who can watch and when (FTC guidance). Not every service offers granular roles or an access-history screen, so document what the provider actually exposes.

Preserve footage and access records before making irreversible changes
Deleting recordings, removing a device from the account or factory-resetting hardware can destroy information that helps establish what happened. Before those actions, ask official support how to retain relevant clips, timestamps, device identifiers and account-access records. The available guidance does not establish a universal consumer evidence-preservation procedure, and retention periods differ by service.
| Choice | Benefit | Risk or trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Disable remote viewing while leaving recording on | Reduces live-feed exposure while preserving new local or cloud recordings, if the product supports that combination. | Some cameras stop recording when cloud access is disabled; verify the behavior. |
| Power down or disconnect | Stops the camera from transmitting or recording immediately. | May remove ongoing evidence and can affect safety monitoring. |
| Factory reset or delete footage | Can remove an attacker’s configuration on some devices. | May erase recordings, logs, account associations or settings needed for an investigation. |
Save copies only through the provider’s normal export function or another lawful method, and keep original timestamps and file metadata where possible. Do not alter or publish intimate footage while trying to prove access.
Escalate threats, intimate images and immediate danger
If someone is threatening you, suspected stalking is involved, or intimate footage may have been exposed, prioritize physical safety over troubleshooting. Move to a safe location, tell a trusted person and seek local law-enforcement or specialist support. Reporting and preservation duties vary by jurisdiction; there is no single consumer rule that applies everywhere. The FTC’s breach-response material is written for businesses and should not be treated as a universal requirement for household camera owners (FTC small-business cybersecurity guidance).

Use official support when controls do not work
Contact the provider when you are locked out, cannot terminate sessions, see users you cannot remove, or cannot determine whether recordings were accessed. Use a phone number or contact page you locate independently. Prepare the account email, camera model, approximate times, alert screenshots and a list of actions already taken. Ask support to:
- Confirm whether sessions, viewers and connected apps can be revoked.
- Explain what access history, login records or recording metadata exists and how long it is retained.
- Preserve relevant records before you reset hardware or delete clips.
- Confirm whether disabling remote viewing actually stops cloud access and whether recording continues.
- Tell you how to restore the account without accepting links or files sent by an unknown person.
Provider capabilities vary by model, edition and region. A support agent may be able to invalidate tokens or preserve server-side records that are invisible in the consumer app.
Verify that the incident is contained
After recovery, sign out of every device you do not recognize, sign back in with the new credentials, and check that only intended users remain. Confirm that 2FA prompts arrive on your controlled device, the recovery email and phone are yours, the camera firmware and app are current, and the router is using supported encryption. Test remote-viewing and recording settings from a trusted device, then leave remote viewing disabled if you do not need it. Continue watching account alerts and camera behavior for several days; a returning unknown session suggests that a device, email account or network—not just the original password—still needs attention.
Quick Recap
Practical decision guide
- Still signed in and no immediate danger: change the camera password, revoke sessions and sharing, secure email, enable 2FA, update software and review the router.
- Locked out: use official recovery and support; do not keep guessing passwords or follow unsolicited links.
- Live viewing appears ongoing: disable remote viewing or power down if safe, then ask support about preserving records.
- Threats, stalking or intimate footage: prioritize safety and local assistance before technical cleanup.
- Unsupported equipment: replace only the camera or router that cannot receive updates or meet necessary security settings; buying new hardware is not an automatic requirement after every account compromise.
