The cause may be a disabled setting, a SIM or network-registration problem, or roaming that your carrier has not enabled. Work through the checks below, then ask your carrier to verify your line and the destination’s supported networks.
Menu names and available controls vary by Galaxy model, software version, carrier, and region. Roaming may also cost extra, so check your own plan’s current terms before using mobile data abroad.

First, identify what is not working
Check the status bar for a network name or signal indicator, then test calls, texts, and mobile data separately. These checks help narrow down the problem; they do not identify its cause with certainty.
- No service or network registration: The phone may not recognize the SIM or eSIM, be authorized to roam, find a compatible supported network, or have coverage where you are.
- Calls or texts work, but mobile internet does not: Check Mobile data and Data roaming, the carrier’s data-roaming permission, and the APN settings.
- Service works in some locations but not others: Local coverage may be the issue; ask your carrier to check coverage at the locations where the phone fails.
Samsung lists disabled mobile data, lack of service in an area, and an incorrect APN among possible reasons mobile data may not work. Samsung Korea support provides troubleshooting guidance; menus and advice may differ by region.

Check the phone’s basic settings and restart it
- Turn off Airplane mode.
- Open the SIM-management controls in Settings and make sure the physical SIM or eSIM line you intend to use is enabled. The path and labels vary by model and software.
- If you need mobile internet, turn on Mobile data for the relevant line.
- On many Galaxy phones, open Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Data roaming and turn on Data roaming for that line. Samsung says Mobile data may need to be on before the Data roaming switch can be changed if it is greyed out. Samsung UK’s roaming instructions show this path. Turning on the setting does not enable roaming on an account that the carrier has not authorized, and roaming charges may apply.
- Restart the phone and give it time to register on a network. If practical, check for a software update while connected to Wi-Fi. Samsung recommends restarting and checking software as part of roaming troubleshooting; a restart can also resolve temporary SIM-recognition problems. Samsung UK and Samsung Korea support describe these checks.
Ask your home carrier to verify roaming and network support
Use Wi-Fi or another phone to contact your home carrier. Ask it to check all of the following for your specific line, plan, device, and destination:
- International roaming is enabled on the account and the plan and handset are permitted to roam.
- Roaming service is available in the country you are visiting.
- Which local partner networks are supported, and whether any of them are available where you are.
- Whether a usage block, account restriction, or other roaming limit is active.
A phone setting cannot authorize roaming the carrier has not provisioned. Samsung advises customers to verify that their provider has authorized the device and plan, and to contact the provider if roaming still fails. Its UK support page also warns that roaming may add charges and notes that some providers have reintroduced EU charges; that does not establish the terms for your line. Check your carrier’s current price and billing conditions for your destination rather than relying on a general roaming price or a code intended for another carrier. Samsung UK roaming support

If the phone is registered but mobile data still fails, check the APN
An APN is a carrier-specific mobile-data setting. Ask your carrier for the correct APN for your exact SIM and plan; do not enter values copied from another operator or country.

The wording and path may differ by device. If you are using another operator’s SIM, Samsung says you may need that operator’s APN information. Check with the carrier before changing settings. Try manual network selection only with carrier guidance
If automatic registration has failed, first ask your carrier which partner networks are supported at your destination. If it confirms a supported partner, you can inspect Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Network operators and select an available, carrier-approved network. Samsung documents network-operator and network-mode controls, but the choices depend on the device, carrier, and local network. Wi-Fi can provide internet access for maps, messages, and contacting support without using mobile data. Wi-Fi Calling may be an option for calls only when your carrier, plan, and device support it and the service is configured; it is not guaranteed to work abroad or to be free. Samsung US support

If your carrier confirms that your line and destination are supported but the phone still cannot register, run that diagnostic if available and contact Samsung support or service.
