What to Do if Your Router Stops Working After a Firmware Update

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A router that stops connecting after an update is not automatically “bricked.” The cause may be an update that is still writing, a lost configuration, an incorrect firmware file, or firmware that needs the manufacturer’s recovery mode. Keep the router powered if the update may still be in progress, identify the exact model and hardware revision, and use only the recovery instructions and firmware supplied for that device and purchase region.

Do not copy a button sequence, IP address, or firmware file from another model. Recovery support differs by hardware revision and vendor; some routers have no documented consumer recovery process. The steps below take you from the safest checks to model-specific rescue and, when necessary, technical support.

First, decide whether the update is still running

If you started an update recently and the router’s lights or administration page indicate that it is still processing, leave it powered and undisturbed. Do not unplug it, repeatedly restart it, close an update page that the vendor says must remain open, or disconnect the network connection used for the update. NETGEAR warns: “To avoid the risk of corrupting the firmware, do not interrupt the update.” Its guidance says an update takes a few minutes, but the correct waiting period and indicator pattern depend on the model. Follow that model’s manual or support page rather than using a generic timer. See NETGEAR’s firmware-update guidance.

  • Record when the update began and what the status light is doing.
  • Keep the power adapter connected directly and avoid power strips that can be switched off accidentally.
  • If the vendor gives a specific completion signal, wait for that signal before testing the connection.

If the router has been unresponsive well beyond the documented update period, continue with identification and diagnosis instead of performing random resets.

Identify the exact router before changing anything

Write down the manufacturer, complete model number, hardware revision, current LED behavior, and whether any device can open the local administration page. The model family name alone is not enough: recovery files and procedures can differ between revisions and regions. TP-Link states that most of its routers support firmware recovery but that some older models do not; its support article is How to Recover a Bricked TP-Link Router.

  • Model and revision: read the label on the underside or rear of the router. Look for markings such as “Ver,” “V,” or “hardware version.”
  • Purchase region: note the country where the router was bought. A vendor may publish different firmware for different regions.
  • LED pattern: record which lights are solid, blinking, or dark immediately after power-on.
  • Local access: connect a computer to the router and test the administration address documented for that model. Internet access can fail while the local page still works.
  • Configuration information: locate your internet-provider credentials and the intended Wi-Fi name and password before any reset.

Use this decision path

What you observe Safest next action What not to assume
The update status still shows activity or the vendor’s expected time has not elapsed Keep power connected and wait for the model’s documented completion signal. A dark or changing LED pattern does not by itself prove the router is permanently damaged.
The administration page opens, but internet or Wi-Fi settings are wrong Use the model’s failed-update instructions, verify the firmware file and revision, and restore configuration as directed. A factory reset rolls firmware back; reset normally changes settings, not the installed firmware.
No administration page, but the router powers on Look for the exact model’s recovery or rescue procedure, normally using a wired computer. Another model’s recovery IP address or button combination is safe to use.
The vendor documents no recovery, or its supported procedure fails Stop experimenting and contact the manufacturer’s technical support. A third-party firmware file or unverified “unbrick” guide is an appropriate substitute.

If the administration page still works

Verify the installed file and hardware revision

Open the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and revision. Confirm that the file is intended for the country where the router was purchased; TP-Link specifically advises using firmware from the official site for that country. Check the downloaded file name and version against the support page before uploading anything again. Do not use firmware for a similar-looking model, a different hardware revision, or a different regional edition.

Check configuration before resetting

An update can leave the firmware intact while disrupting saved settings. Inspect the internet connection type, wireless networks, and any provider-specific credentials in the administration interface. If the vendor’s procedure calls for a reset, record settings first if the interface allows it. A reset is a configuration recovery step, not a firmware downgrade.

Separate internet failure from router failure

Test a computer connected by Ethernet, then test Wi-Fi. If the wired connection reaches the administration page but not the internet, the router may need the ISP login, connection type, or DNS settings entered again. If neither wired nor wireless clients can reach the local page, move to the model’s recovery instructions.

When normal access is unavailable: use official recovery mode

Recovery is vendor- and model-specific. Depending on the device, it may use a browser upload, a dedicated utility, an app, or another process. Many procedures require a direct Ethernet connection between a computer and the router. Use a working Ethernet cable if your model’s instructions require one; the cable provides the wired link but cannot repair firmware by itself.

Typical preparation

  1. Disconnect other network equipment so the recovery computer is connected directly to the router’s specified LAN port.
  2. Download the recovery utility or firmware only from the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model, hardware revision, and purchase region.
  3. Read the complete procedure before powering the router off. Note the required port, reset-button timing, file format, and computer network settings.
  4. Temporarily disable connections that could route the computer through another network, such as Wi-Fi or a VPN, if the vendor instructs you to use only the wired adapter.
  5. Perform the button sequence and upload exactly as documented. Do not interrupt power during the write.

TP-Link recovery example

TP-Link documents two recovery methods for certain routers. Its example uses an Ethernet-connected computer, a temporary static IP address on that computer, and a firmware upload while the router is in recovery mode. The exact address, LAN port, button sequence, and supported file vary by model. TP-Link also notes that some older devices do not support its recovery process. Follow the instructions in TP-Link’s recovery article only after confirming that your model is covered.

ASUS Rescue Mode example

ASUS’s documented process illustrates how specific recovery can be. It requires the model’s Firmware Restoration utility, a direct wired connection, and a computer IPv4 configuration of 192.168.1.10 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0. To enter Rescue Mode in that example, hold Reset while reconnecting power, then use the utility to upload the appropriate firmware file. After recovery, ASUS instructs you to return the computer’s IPv4 setting to automatic.

Those addresses and timing instructions are ASUS-specific examples, not universal router values. Do not apply them to a different vendor or model unless its own support documentation gives the same settings.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

What a successful recovery looks like

  • The utility or browser reports that the upload completed without an error.
  • The router reboots on its own or shows the documented normal LED pattern.
  • A wired computer can open the local administration page again.
  • The router may require initial setup because saved settings were erased.

If the utility cannot detect the router, stop after checking the documented cable, port, IP setting, and button timing once. Repeating incompatible procedures can make diagnosis harder and may interrupt a valid recovery attempt.

Factory-reset decisions and consequences

Factory reset should be used only when the exact model’s instructions call for it or when support directs you to do so. It normally restores configuration defaults; it does not automatically install an earlier firmware version. TP-Link’s update guidance explains that a reset can remove previous internet-access and wireless settings, requiring the router to be configured again. ASUS maintains model-specific instructions for hard factory resets, including cases where a standard reset is not working.

Prepare before pressing Reset

  • Obtain your ISP username, password, VLAN or connection details, if your provider requires them.
  • Save or write down the desired Wi-Fi name, password, security mode, and any custom LAN settings.
  • Identify the reset duration and button location for your exact model; holding it for the wrong interval can trigger a different action.
  • Expect connected devices to disconnect until the setup is complete.

After the reset, connect by Ethernet if possible, open the documented setup page, restore the internet settings, and recreate the wireless network. If the router still cannot provide a local page after the supported reset, return to the recovery or support path rather than resetting repeatedly.

How to handle firmware-file and regional mistakes

An update file must match all relevant identifiers: manufacturer, model, hardware revision, and purchase region. “Almost the same” is not a valid match. A file for a later hardware revision may be rejected, or it may produce an unusable device. If you suspect that the wrong file was selected, do not upload additional files at random. Record the file name and version, then give that information to technical support.

Symptoms that point to different next steps

Power light is normal, but there is no internet

Open the local administration page over Ethernet. If it opens, check WAN settings, ISP credentials, and whether the update restored defaults. Contact the ISP only after confirming that the router’s local settings are correct.

Wi-Fi name disappeared, but wired access works

The wireless configuration may have returned to defaults or been cleared. Configure Wi-Fi from the administration page rather than assuming the radio hardware failed.

No wired or wireless local access

Use only the model’s documented recovery mode. Check the specified LAN port, cable, static-IP requirement, utility version, and button sequence. Do not substitute a procedure from another model.

Router repeatedly reboots or remains on an unusual LED pattern

Do not keep power-cycling it while a recovery write may be occurring. Compare the pattern with the model’s support documentation. If no documented recovery applies, contact the manufacturer.

When to stop and contact the manufacturer

Escalate when the exact model has no published recovery process, the vendor says the model is unsupported, the official utility cannot detect the router after the documented checks, or the supported upload and reset do not restore local access. TP-Link explicitly recommends technical support when recovery is unavailable or unsuccessful. Provide:

  • Complete model number and hardware revision.
  • Purchase country and, if known, the firmware version and file name used.
  • Date and approximate time of the update.
  • LED behavior and whether the router provides a local administration page.
  • Every supported recovery step attempted and the exact error or result.

Do not install unofficial firmware or open the enclosure unless the manufacturer’s support team specifically directs you. If support determines that the model cannot be recovered, replacement becomes a considered outcome—not the default first fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preventing a repeat failure

  • Use a stable power source and avoid updating during known power interruptions.
  • Download firmware only from the official support page for the exact model, revision, and region.
  • Read the update instructions before starting and note the expected duration.
  • Keep a written record of ISP credentials and Wi-Fi settings so a reset is recoverable.
  • After updating, verify local administration access and internet connectivity before changing other network equipment.
  • Keep the model’s recovery instructions and support contact details with the router documentation.

The practical answer

Leave a possibly active update alone, identify the exact hardware, verify the regional firmware, and use only the manufacturer’s documented recovery method. A factory reset may restore access to configuration but can erase internet and Wi-Fi settings, and it does not generally roll firmware back. When the model lacks recovery support or the official process fails, stop and contact the manufacturer with the router’s identifiers, LED behavior, firmware file, and error details.
