What to Do If Your Phone Gets Wet or Sand Gets Into Its Charging Port

Unplug the cable and do not try wired charging while your phone’s charging connector or cable end is wet. If sand is in the port, turn the phone off and do not probe inside it. Drying and safe inspection are different problems: moisture needs time and airflow, while lodged debris may need professional cleaning.

If your phone or charging port is wet

Disconnect power and accessories

Unplug any connected cable or accessory. Do not reconnect it until the phone’s connector, the cable ends, and the accessory are completely dry. Charging through a wet connector can damage the phone, and moisture may corrode cable pins. On Galaxy phones, moisture detection can block charging to help protect the device.

If you see a liquid-detection alert, treat it as a reason to stop wired charging, not as a prompt to override the warning. Do not keep reconnecting the cable to see whether the alert has cleared. The alert and the physical condition of the connector matter more than whether the phone appears to be working normally.

Check both ends of the cable and any accessory that was connected. Drying only the phone’s port is not enough if a cable end or accessory is still wet. Keep everything disconnected while it dries, and do not use wired charging as a test.

Let the connector dry with airflow

  1. Hold the phone with its connector facing down and gently tap it against your hand to help remove excess liquid. Do not shake it forcefully.
  2. Place it in a dry area with airflow. For an iPhone, Apple says cool airflow from a fan directed at the connector may help.
  3. Wait until the phone and anything you plan to connect are completely dry. Follow the current instructions for your exact phone model and any alert on screen.

Drying time is not a universal countdown. Apple’s liquid-detection instructions say drying can take up to 24 hours, while its general exposure guidance says to allow at least five hours before wired charging or connecting an accessory. Those are different instructions for different situations, not a guarantee that charging is safe after either interval. Samsung says most moisture on a Galaxy evaporates by itself within a few hours, but that estimate is not a substitute for checking the device’s warning and model-specific guidance.

In practice, use the longer time if your model’s warning or instructions call for it, and do not assume a connector is ready just because a certain number of hours has passed. The endpoint is a dry connector and dry accessories, with no persistent alert—not a timer alone. If the alert remains, continue to avoid wired charging and follow the maker’s directions for that device.

Do not use heat or put anything into the connector

Do not use a hair dryer, heater, oven, or other external heat source, and do not use compressed air. Avoid inserting cotton swabs, paper towels, or other objects into the port. These can damage the connector or leave material behind. Apple’s instructions for iPhone 7 and later specifically warn against external heat and inserting foreign objects into the Lightning or USB-C connector.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not put the phone in rice. It is not a substitute for the dry-area-and-airflow approach, and loose material can create another debris problem. Keep the phone’s exterior dry with a soft, lint-free cloth if needed; Apple advises against cleaning products on the phone.

Keep the advice specific to the part that got wet. A splash on the exterior does not make it safe to plug in a potentially wet connector. Apple’s guidance about rinsing applies to the limited case of a liquid other than water splashing on an iPhone; it is not a general instruction to rinse a wet charging port, and it is not a way to remove sand.

If a liquid-detection alert stays on

Keep the cable disconnected while the connector dries. If the alert recurs after the phone and cable are dry, or the phone still will not charge, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. A persistent warning can indicate a problem that drying alone has not resolved.

Samsung’s troubleshooting instructions include region- and model-specific guidance. Do not treat a menu path for clearing a USB cache as a universal fix: it does not dry a wet connector, and it is not a replacement for service if the warning or charging failure persists. Check the current support instructions for your particular Galaxy model and region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that the same warning, menu, or remedy applies across all Android phones. Manufacturers can provide different steps for different models, and a warning that persists deserves model-specific support rather than repeated plugging in or improvised cleaning.

If you need power before the port is dry

For a compatible iPhone, Apple says you may use a Qi-certified wireless charger while the connector is wet, provided the back of the phone is dry. This is an alternative charging method, not a way to dry the connector. For another phone, use wireless charging only if that exact model supports it and its manufacturer’s instructions allow it under the circumstances.

Wireless charging is conditional, not a universal workaround. Confirm that the phone supports the charger, keep the phone’s back dry as Apple specifies for iPhone, and do not put a wet phone on a charging pad as a drying method. A wireless charger is only relevant if you already have a compatible phone and charger; buying a pad is not necessary to resolve the connector problem.

If sand or other debris is in the charging port

Do not dig it out

Turn the phone off and look at the port without pushing material farther inside. Do not use a pin, pick, toothpick, cotton swab, brush pushed into the port, vacuum attachment, or compressed-air can as a default cleaning method. Apple warns against inserting foreign objects and using compressed air for dust; Samsung advises against inserting objects into the charging port.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple recommends a soft, lint-free cloth for dust or dirt on the phone’s exterior, but that does not establish a safe at-home method for extracting sand lodged among charging contacts. If debris remains inside, arrange professional cleaning rather than probing the connector.

Keep the distinction between exterior dirt and material lodged in the port clear. You can gently wipe dust or dirt from the outside of the phone with a soft, lint-free cloth, but that does not mean it is safe to push a cloth or tool into the connector. If you can see sand inside, resist the temptation to scrape it toward the opening: the cited manufacturer instructions do not provide a universal at-home extraction technique for sand lodged around the contacts.

Also avoid trying several tools in succession. A tool that seems small enough may still push grit deeper or affect the connector. If a cable no longer fits normally, charging is unreliable, or debris remains visible inside, stop attempting to connect or clean the port and ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider about professional cleaning.

Do not rinse a sandy port

Sand and water are separate problems. Do not flush or rinse the charging port to remove sand. Apple’s guidance about rinsing applies to a specific case—when a liquid other than water splashes on an iPhone—not as a general cleaning method for debris in a connector.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the phone has both sand and moisture, do not combine the two problems into a rinse-and-scrub attempt. Avoid charging while the connector is wet, and do not insert an object to remove the sand. Once you have stopped using the port, get professional help if debris remains or you cannot tell whether the connector is clear.

When to get professional help

Contact the phone manufacturer or an authorized service provider if a liquid alert keeps returning after drying, sand remains lodged, the port appears damaged or corroded, or the phone still cannot charge. Stop trying to connect a cable if it will not fit normally or charging repeatedly fails. A service provider can assess the connector without relying on improvised tools that may cause further damage.

Choose service based on the problem: a phone that is still displaying a liquid alert needs help with a persistent moisture warning or charging failure; a port with lodged grit needs professional cleaning; and visible damage or corrosion calls for assessment rather than further charging attempts. These are reasons to seek help, not a promise that a particular repair or warranty outcome will follow.

Do not assume the repair will be covered by warranty. Coverage depends on the manufacturer’s terms, your location, and the circumstances of the damage; Apple and Samsung’s cited support guidance does not establish a universal warranty outcome. Ask the manufacturer or service provider about coverage for your device and situation.

Which instructions apply to your phone?

Apple’s general exposure guidance cited here covers iPhone 7 and later, while its liquid-detection instructions cover iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and later models described on that support page. Water resistance and its limits vary by iPhone model and condition, so a water-resistance rating should not be treated as permission to charge a wet phone.

Samsung’s cited support pages address Galaxy moisture detection and charging problems, but instructions can vary by model and region. For other Android phones, follow the maker’s current instructions for that specific model rather than assuming Galaxy or iPhone steps apply.

Apple published its general iPhone exposure guidance on March 17, 2026. Samsung Gulf’s charging troubleshooting page was last updated June 29, 2026. These are page dates, not evidence that a particular drying interval works for every phone.

The safest next step depends on what happened: for liquid, disconnect the cable and allow the connector to dry; for sand, power off the phone and do not probe or rinse the port. For either problem, stop trying to charge if a warning persists, the connector looks damaged, or normal charging does not resume after following the instructions for your model.

Can I charge my phone if the charging port is wet?

Do not use wired charging while the connector is wet or a liquid-detection alert is present. Apple says a compatible iPhone may use a Qi-certified wireless charger if the phone’s back is dry; users of other phones should check their exact model’s instructions and wireless-charging compatibility.

How long should I wait before charging a wet phone?

There is no single safe waiting time for every phone. Apple’s instructions give different timings for different situations—up to 24 hours for liquid-alert drying and at least five hours in its general exposure guidance—while Samsung says most Galaxy moisture evaporates within a few hours. Follow the alert and current guidance for your exact model, and do not treat a timer as a guarantee.

How do I get sand out of my phone charging port?

Turn the phone off and inspect the port without pushing material deeper. Do not use picks, pins, cotton swabs, compressed air, or other objects as a default cleaning method, and do not rinse the port. If sand remains lodged inside, arrange professional cleaning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a hair dryer, rice, or compressed air to dry my phone?

No. Apple advises against external heat and compressed air, and warns against putting foreign objects into the connector. Use a dry area with airflow instead; a cool fan directed at an iPhone connector may help.

When should I take my phone in for service?

Seek manufacturer support or an authorized service provider if a liquid alert recurs after drying, sand remains lodged, the port appears damaged or corroded, or the phone still cannot charge. Warranty coverage depends on the manufacturer’s terms, location, and circumstances.

The Bottom Line

For a wet phone, unplug everything and let the connector dry with time and airflow; do not wired-charge, apply heat, or insert anything. For sand, turn the phone off, do not rinse or probe the port, and get professional cleaning if debris remains. Follow the current instructions for your exact model, and seek service for persistent warnings, damage, or charging failures.
