First identify the exact compatibility blocker with Microsoft PC Health Check or Windows Update. If the issue is a correctable setting, memory, or storage limit, confirm a safe upgrade for your specific model with its manufacturer or a qualified technician. If the processor or other hardware remains ineligible, choose a supported replacement, use Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) only as a temporary bridge where offered, and back up your files before changing or recycling the computer. Installing Windows 11 on unsupported hardware is not a supported solution.
Start with a precise compatibility diagnosis
Do not decide that a computer is “too old” from its purchase date alone. Windows 11 eligibility is determined by the machine’s processor, firmware, security hardware, memory, storage, graphics capability and display. Microsoft’s PC Health Check tool provides an eligibility result and identifies the failed requirement. On an unmanaged personal computer, Windows Update can also show whether the upgrade is available.

Run PC Health Check
- Install or open Microsoft’s PC Health Check app.
- Select the Windows 11 compatibility or health check option.
- Read the specific failure reason, such as an unsupported processor, disabled TPM, disabled Secure Boot, insufficient memory or inadequate storage.
- Record the exact model number and the requirement named by the tool before buying parts or a new computer.
Check Windows Update as a second signal
Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update in Windows 10, then select Check for updates. Windows Update may assess eligibility for consumer devices and offer Windows 11 when the device qualifies. A temporary hold, driver issue or staged rollout can make the offer absent even when the hardware passes, so the Health Check result is the more useful diagnostic when the upgrade is refused.

| Requirement | Microsoft baseline | What it means for an upgrade decision |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | 1 GHz or faster, at least two cores, from Microsoft’s approved CPU list | Eligibility depends on the exact processor model. A BIOS setting cannot add an unsupported CPU to the approved list. |
| Memory | At least 4 GB RAM | Some desktops and laptops have upgradeable memory; many thin laptops have soldered RAM. |
| Storage | At least 64 GB | A compatible larger drive may solve a capacity failure, but check the device’s drive type, physical size and cloning or reinstall requirements. |
| Firmware | UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable | Legacy BIOS mode, an old firmware version or a manufacturer-specific limitation can prevent compliance. |
| Security module | TPM 2.0 | TPM may be present but disabled in firmware, or the computer may lack a usable TPM 2.0 implementation. |
| Graphics | DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver | Both the graphics hardware and its driver support matter. |
| Display | Qualifying high-definition display | The computer must meet Microsoft’s display requirement in addition to the internal hardware tests. |
| Initial setup | Internet connection and Microsoft account for Windows 11 Home and personal-use Pro | This applies during first setup, not as a way to repair a failed hardware requirement. |
Separate fixable blockers from permanent ones
TPM or Secure Boot is disabled
Some systems meet the hardware requirement but have a firmware option turned off. The names and menus vary by manufacturer and model. Use the computer maker’s support instructions for that exact model before changing settings. Enabling Secure Boot can require converting a system disk from legacy partitioning to UEFI-compatible partitioning, and a mistake can make Windows unbootable. Back up important data first and do not change firmware settings blindly.
RAM or storage is below the minimum
Memory and storage are the two requirements most likely to be physically upgradeable. Verify the maximum supported RAM, memory type, number of slots and whether existing modules are soldered. For storage, verify the interface, physical dimensions, firmware support and whether the current drive can be cloned. Include the cost of compatible parts, labor, a data migration and a recovery plan; a low-cost part is not automatically a sensible repair if the machine has other failing components.
The processor is not approved
Processor eligibility is inherent to the CPU. Replacing a laptop processor is often impractical or impossible, while a desktop may require a motherboard, memory and cooling changes in addition to the CPU. Ask the manufacturer or a qualified local hardware professional whether a supported processor exists for the exact model. Do not spend money on RAM, storage or BIOS changes expecting them to make an unapproved processor eligible.

An old motherboard may not provide UEFI Secure Boot, TPM 2.0 or a DirectX 12-compatible graphics path. A firmware update can help only when the manufacturer documents support for that model; it cannot create capabilities the hardware does not contain. Obtain the model-specific documentation before attempting an update, and keep the computer connected to reliable power during firmware work.

What to do after a repair brings the PC into compliance
- Confirm the change is supported by the manufacturer and that your files are backed up.
- Install the part or change the firmware setting according to the model-specific instructions.
- Restart Windows and run PC Health Check again.
- Install current device drivers and firmware updates offered by the manufacturer.
- Wait for Windows Update to offer Windows 11 after the computer passes the checks. Do not force the installation merely because a single requirement now appears fixed.
If the diagnostic still reports a different blocker, treat that as a new hardware or configuration decision rather than repeatedly retrying the upgrade.
Why an unsupported Windows 11 installation is a risky workaround
Microsoft does not recommend installing Windows 11 below its minimum requirements. Its policy warns that “Installing Windows 11 on this PC is not recommended and may result in compatibility issues.” Microsoft also states that devices failing the requirements might malfunction because of compatibility or other issues.
- The installation is outside Microsoft’s supported configuration.
- Compatibility problems may affect startup, drivers, applications, peripherals or reliability.
- Updates, including security updates, are not guaranteed.
- Future updates can change the behavior of an unsupported installation.
That makes an unsupported installation different from a normal upgrade: it may appear to work on day one while leaving you responsible for recovery and security failures later. If the computer is used for banking, work, health records or other sensitive activity, the risk of missing security updates deserves particular weight.
Windows 10 after support ended
Microsoft’s Windows 10 lifecycle ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 computers continue to start and run existing software, but normal feature updates, security updates and Microsoft technical support ended on that date. A device connected to the internet without current security updates has greater exposure to newly discovered vulnerabilities.

Keeping the computer offline or limiting its use can reduce exposure, but it does not restore support or make unsupported software safe for every task. Before choosing this path, identify which activities require internet access, current browser support, business compliance or security updates.
Consumer ESU: a temporary transition option
Consumer Extended Security Updates are intended for eligible personal-use Windows 10 devices and can provide security updates after the normal end of support. ESU is a bridge while you arrange a supported computer or another workable plan, not a permanent extension of Windows 10’s full support lifecycle.
Microsoft’s current official pages show conflicting end dates: one support article states coverage through October 12, 2027, while another Windows page lists October 13, 2026 and notes regional variations. Do not assume either date applies universally. Open the ESU enrollment offer in Windows Settings and the Microsoft support information localized to your country, then read the terms shown for your device.
Recommended Free Tools
Check before relying on ESU
- Confirm that the computer is a qualifying personal-use device.
- Check the enrollment method, cost or other conditions displayed for your region.
- Record the actual coverage end date shown for your device.
- Use the time to migrate files, applications and accounts to a supported system.
If no ESU offer appears, do not treat a third-party activation claim as equivalent to Microsoft coverage.

When replacing the computer is the practical answer
Microsoft recommends moving to a new Windows 11 device when the existing computer cannot meet the requirements or is ready for replacement. Choose by workload rather than by the Windows logo alone.
- Applications: verify that essential desktop programs, browser extensions and licensing systems run on the new version.
- Peripherals: check printers, scanners, specialty input devices, docks and older accessories for supported drivers.
- Accessibility: account for screen magnification, speech tools, input devices and display characteristics.
- Performance: match memory, storage and processor capability to your actual workload, not merely the Windows minimum.
- Connectivity: check ports, Wi-Fi or wired networking, external displays and removable media.
- Support life: ask how long the manufacturer expects to provide firmware and driver support.
No single model or price is appropriate for every reader. Compare the complete cost, including accessories, data migration, required software licenses and disposal of the old computer.

Protect the data before changing firmware, replacing a drive or handing the computer to someone else. Microsoft describes Windows Backup and OneDrive migration options. An external storage device is another physical backup route, provided the copy is completed and can be opened on a separate computer.
Use a practical backup checklist
- List documents, photos, videos, project folders, browser data, email archives and locally stored game or application files.
- Back up those files to a destination separate from the computer.
- Export or record password-manager, two-factor authentication and software-license recovery information using each service’s approved process.
- Open representative files from the backup to confirm they are readable.
- Keep the original computer intact until the new system has been tested and the important data is present.
A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption. Test a few files before wiping, trading in or recycling the old machine.
Best Value
- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
Recycle or trade in the old PC safely
After migration, check recycling and trade-in programs available in your region. Eligibility, accepted models and data-erasure requirements vary by market. Sign out of accounts, remove personal storage when appropriate, reset or securely erase the device using a method suitable for its drive, and retain proof of transfer if a program provides it. If a drive contains especially sensitive information and cannot be reliably erased, ask a qualified professional about secure destruction rather than putting it into general recycling.
Evaluate the choices with a decision framework
| Path | Supported, updated operating system? | Main cost factors | Best fit | Key risk or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Correct a firmware setting | Usually yes, if every requirement then passes | Time, professional help if needed, recovery risk | A machine that already contains the required hardware | Model-specific firmware mistakes can prevent startup. |
| Upgrade RAM or storage | Yes, after a complete eligibility pass | Compatible parts, labor and data migration | An upgradeable system with otherwise suitable hardware | The processor or another requirement may still fail. |
| Consumer ESU | Windows 10 remains outside normal support; security coverage is limited and temporary | Regional enrollment terms and eventual replacement | Eligible personal-use devices needing transition time | End date and availability vary; it is not a permanent solution. |
| Replace with a supported Windows 11 PC | Yes, subject to the new device’s support lifecycle | Computer, accessories, software and migration | Ineligible, unreliable or uneconomical-to-repair systems | Requires budgeting and compatibility checks. |
| Unsupported Windows 11 installation | No guarantee of support or updates | Recovery time and possible replacement anyway | Not recommended as a normal solution | Compatibility failures and missing security updates are possible. |
Use total cost, expected useful life, application and peripheral compatibility, backup effort, regional program availability and your tolerance for unsupported software when making the choice. Hardware suitability and repair pricing are specific to the exact computer, so obtain a model-specific assessment before spending money.
Could another operating system work?
A different operating system may be worth investigating only when your applications, peripherals, accessibility tools and support obligations allow it. Compatibility, maintenance practices and security-support terms vary by operating system and hardware. Verify every essential application and device before changing platforms, and keep a tested backup and recovery plan. It should be treated as a separate compatibility project, not an automatic answer to a Windows 11 hardware failure.
Quick Recap
A safe order of operations
