First, determine whether a VPN session actually succeeded. In the active-exploitation scenario reported by Palo Alto Networks Unit 42, attackers exploited CVE-2026-0257 to bypass authentication restrictions on vulnerable GlobalProtect portal and gateway components. Probing or scanning alone does not prove that an attacker connected. Preserve GlobalProtect logs, look for successful gateway-connected events, compare those events with the current indicators, and start your incident-response process when a successful event matches them. Then check the exact PAN-OS or Prisma Access release against Palo Alto’s current CVE-2026-0257 advisory and apply the applicable workaround, mitigation, or fixed release.
What this alert is about
CVE-2026-0257 is an authentication-bypass vulnerability affecting GlobalProtect portal and gateway components in certain PAN-OS releases. Government advisories also identify affected Prisma Access versions. Unit 42 reported active exploitation in which an unauthenticated remote attacker could bypass restrictions and establish an unauthorized VPN connection.

Decide which response path applies
| What you find | What it means | Immediate posture |
|---|---|---|
| Scanning or probing with no successful gateway-connected event | An external system tested the service, but the available observation does not show that a VPN session was established. | Preserve logs, hunt for additional indicators, verify exposure and perform the applicable mitigation or update. |
| Successful gateway-connected event with a listed indicator | This is the strongest trigger in the Unit 42 guidance for treating the activity as a possible unauthorized session. | Activate your incident-response process, preserve relevant evidence and escalate to qualified responders. |
| Successful event with no matching listed indicator | The connection deserves investigation, but the published indicator set is not comprehensive or permanent. | Correlate identity, source address, host details, timing and downstream access; do not dismiss it solely because an indicator is absent. |
| Deployment is on an affected release or configuration | The vulnerable condition may exist even if you have not found suspicious activity. | Follow Palo Alto’s current CVE advisory for the exact branch, workaround, mitigation and fixed release. |
| Deployment is on a fixed or unaffected release, verified against the current advisory | This reduces exposure to this CVE, but does not explain an already recorded suspicious session. | Continue investigating any successful event and retain evidence according to your incident procedures. |
1. Establish whether your deployment is in scope
Identify the product and release
- Record whether the remote-access service is GlobalProtect on a PAN-OS firewall or Prisma Access.
- Capture the exact installed release, including maintenance suffixes such as
-h6or-h36, and note the portal, gateway and authentication configuration in use. - Compare those details with Palo Alto’s current CVE-2026-0257 advisory. Do not rely on a branch list copied into an older article: fixes and affected ranges differ by release family and can change as the advisory is updated.
The May 31, 2026 Singapore advisory lists these affected PAN-OS families and thresholds:
| PAN-OS branch | Affected versions listed by the Singapore advisory |
|---|---|
| 12.1 | Versions before 12.1.4-h6 and 12.1.7 |
| 11.2 | Versions before 11.2.4-h17, 11.2.7-h14, 11.2.10-h7 and 11.2.12 |
| 11.1 | Versions before 11.1.4-h33, 11.1.6-h32, 11.1.7-h6, 11.1.10-h25, 11.1.13-h5 and 11.1.15 |
| 10.2 | Versions before 10.2.7-h34, 10.2.10-h36, 10.2.13-h21, 10.2.16-h7 and 10.2.18-h6 |
The Canadian advisory, dated May 13 and updated May 29, 2026, separately identifies Prisma Access 11.2.0 releases before 11.2.7-h13 and 10.2.0 releases before 10.2.10-h36. These lists describe the advisory versions at those dates, not a substitute for checking the current Palo Alto notice. The Singapore advisory describes the impacted deployment as GlobalProtect portal and gateway in PAN-OS and Prisma Access.
2. Preserve logs before changing systems
Preservation matters because upgrades, log rotation and emergency configuration changes can remove the evidence needed to distinguish a probe from a successful session. Export or otherwise retain the relevant GlobalProtect authentication, portal and gateway logs with timestamps and timezone information. Keep the original copies protected from alteration, and record who collected them and when.

- Search for successful gateway-connected events, not only failed logins or generic scans.
- Retain source IP address, event time, username or authentication context, host ID, device name, endpoint details and the gateway or portal involved.
- Save surrounding events before and after each match so investigators can see session creation, disconnects and repeated attempts.
- Preserve firewall, identity-provider, endpoint and central logging records for the same time window.
Unit 42 reported that only a small portion of probed devices established VPN sessions and generated gateway-connected events. “Small portion” is a qualitative observation, not a percentage and not assurance that later campaigns behaved the same way.
3. Hunt the published indicators
Pre-proof-of-concept activity
For activity before public proof-of-concept code was released on May 29, 2026, Unit 42 recommends checking successful login connections from these addresses:
23.128.228[.]6104.207.144[.]154146.19.216[.]119146.19.216[.]120146.19.216[.]125179.43.172[.]213185.195.232[.]139198.12.106[.]60202.144.192[.]47
The bracketed dots are a safe way to display indicators. In a security tool, use the correctly normalized IP address required by that tool. Search the source-address field attached to a successful GlobalProtect connection, rather than treating any packet from one of these addresses as proof of a session.

Post-proof-of-concept client characteristics
For monitoring after May 29, Unit 42 describes hard-coded client configuration characteristics. Hunt for an endpoint_os_version value of Microsoft Windows 10 Pro 64-bit together with an empty source_user_info.domain. These are time-bound intelligence clues, not a complete or permanent blocklist. A matching value should increase the priority of the event; it should be evaluated with the session time, source address, user context and other logs.

4. Interpret what the logs actually show
A probe is not the same as a session
Internet-facing security devices routinely receive scans, malformed requests and authentication attempts. A probe can show that an attacker found or tested an endpoint without showing that the authentication bypass worked. The response threshold in the Unit 42 guidance is a successful gateway-connected event linked to the published indicators.
A successful event needs context
Correlate the event with the organization’s expected users, source networks, device inventory, time of day and normal GlobalProtect behavior. An indicator-linked successful event is a reason to invoke incident response even if you cannot yet prove access to internal applications. An unexplained successful event without a listed indicator still warrants investigation because indicator lists are snapshots of known activity.

Do not overread the absence of lateral movement
At the time of its brief, Unit 42 said it had identified no post-access behavior or lateral movement in the activity it described. That is a time-bound statement about observed cases, not a guarantee that no later attacker activity occurred on your network. Continue checking identity, endpoint, firewall, application and cloud logs for the session’s period.

5. Mitigate the vulnerable condition
- Open Palo Alto’s current CVE-2026-0257 advisory and select the guidance for your exact PAN-OS or Prisma Access branch.
- Apply the documented workaround or mitigation if an immediate upgrade is not possible, following the vendor’s prerequisites and service-impact warnings.
- Schedule and install the fixed release that the live advisory identifies for your branch. Validate the resulting version on every relevant portal and gateway, including high-availability peers and managed Prisma Access components.
- Confirm that GlobalProtect authentication and expected remote-access workflows still function after the change, and retain change records with the precise pre-change and post-change versions.
Government advisories recommend performing the mitigations and applying necessary updates. Avoid treating a version as safe merely because it is newer than one number in an older list; maintenance releases are branch-specific.
6. Escalate when a suspicious session is found
Activate the organization’s incident-response plan for a suspicious successful gateway-connected event, especially one matching an IP, host identifier, device name or client configuration indicator. Notify the incident commander or security operations lead, preserve evidence and limit ad-hoc changes that could destroy logs.
Unit 42 directs organizations that believe they may have been compromised, or that have an urgent matter, to its Incident Response team. That is a vendor-provided contact route. Use it alongside your organization’s independent incident-response provider, legal counsel and regulatory process where applicable; the existence of the contact route does not itself establish that a compromise occurred.

The official material summarized here does not provide a complete CVE-specific recovery runbook for every confirmed compromise. It does not, by itself, establish mandatory credential rotation, certificate or private-key replacement, firewall reinstallation, or restoration from backup. Those actions may be appropriate after an investigation, but they should be selected by the incident-response lead after reviewing the current Palo Alto advisory, affected configuration and evidence of access.
Do not treat a consumer VPN subscription, generic antivirus product or replacement hardware as a remedy for this server-side authentication-bypass scenario. The necessary response is evidence preservation, scope verification, vendor-directed mitigation or updating, and professional incident handling when the logs indicate a suspicious successful session.
Quick Recap
Operational checklist
- Identify GlobalProtect versus Prisma Access and record every exact release.
- Compare each release and configuration with the current CVE-2026-0257 advisory.
- Export and protect GlobalProtect portal and gateway logs before making changes.
- Search successful gateway-connected events for the published IP, host and client indicators.
- Separate probes from sessions; do not call a scan a compromise.
- Correlate suspicious sessions with identity, endpoint, firewall and application records.
- Invoke incident response for an indicator-linked successful event or other credible evidence of unauthorized access.
- Apply the branch-specific workaround, mitigation or fixed release and document validation.
- Refresh the Unit 42 indicators and vendor guidance as threat intelligence changes.
