If an online travel agency (OTA) says your booking is pending—or you have no confirmation—check the OTA’s records, then verify the reservation directly with the airline, hotel, or other provider. An email or payment authorization alone does not prove that a flight ticket was issued or a property has your reservation. Save your records, ask the OTA for a clear written status, and use the payment or consumer-protection routes available where you live if the booking cannot be confirmed.
1. Check your booking records and payment status
Sign in to the OTA using its official app or website. Check the booking page and all email folders, including spam and promotions, for an itinerary, status notice, ticket number, property reference, and receipt. Save screenshots or copies of what you find, along with the booking terms that were shown when you paid.

A card authorization or a message acknowledging your order does not by itself establish that an airline issued a ticket. Nor does a missing email prove that the booking failed. The provider’s own records are the practical check.
2. Ask the OTA for a definite answer in writing
Contact the OTA promptly through its official support channel. Include the itinerary and passenger or guest name, but avoid sending unnecessary sensitive information. Ask it to answer these questions for every part of the trip:

- Is the flight, room, or other service confirmed with the provider?
- For a flight, has an e-ticket actually been issued? If so, what is the ticket number?
- What is the airline’s, property’s, or operator’s own booking reference?
- If it is not confirmed, will the OTA complete the booking or cancel and refund it? What process and expected resolution date apply?
Keep the support reply and case number. Do not assume there is a universal confirmation window: the UK Civil Aviation Authority says, “There is no set legal period when tickets should be issued.” Its guidance is UK-specific and does not establish a deadline for every country or type of booking (UK CAA guidance on problems with a travel agent).
3. Verify each service directly with its provider
Use contact details from the provider’s official website or another independently verified source, rather than relying on a number or link in an unexpected message. Give the provider the relevant name, dates, route, and reference numbers, and ask whether it can find the reservation in its system.

- Flights: Contact the airline that will operate the flight. Ask whether the reservation is present and whether a ticket has been issued. If an itinerary has multiple airlines or separately booked segments, check each one.
- Accommodation: Contact the property using its official website or a phone number you have independently verified. Confirm the guest name, dates, and room reservation.
- Packages or multiple services: Check each component separately. A confirmed hotel does not establish that a flight or transfer is confirmed, and vice versa.
UK CAA guidance advises checking with the airline if you are concerned about missing tickets (UK CAA guidance). Consumer Protection BC likewise recommends contacting airlines, hotels, and other operators to confirm reservations in the circumstances it covers (Consumer Protection BC guidance).

4. Work out who is responsible for the booking
Check the receipt and booking terms to identify the legal seller or contracting party. An OTA may sell the travel service itself, or it may only introduce you to another provider; the arrangement and contract terms can differ between sites. Japan’s Tourism Agency explains this distinction in its guidance on travel reservation sites (Japan Tourism Agency guidance).

That distinction can affect whom to contact and how to seek a refund. In the United States, the Department of Transportation says travelers who bought a ticket through an online travel agency or other agent should contact the agent directly for a refund before contacting the airline. This is U.S.-specific guidance, not a universal rule (U.S. DOT: Buying a Ticket).
5. If the provider cannot find the reservation
Tell the OTA what the provider said and ask it to confirm its position in writing. Request a clear answer on whether it will complete the booking or cancel it and explain the refund process. Keep the booking terms, status screens, payment records, provider responses, and OTA correspondence together; these may help if you need to dispute a payment or make a complaint.

If you paid for a service that is not supplied, ask your card issuer or payment provider what dispute options and time limits apply to your situation. A chargeback, statutory protection, or insurance claim is not guaranteed: availability depends on factors such as your country, payment method, seller, and booking arrangement. The UK CAA and Consumer Protection BC describe routes relevant to their respective jurisdictions and circumstances, not a worldwide remedy.
6. Escalate through the right local route
If the OTA does not resolve the problem, identify the seller and check the travel, aviation, or consumer-protection body for your location. The appropriate route depends on where you live, where the seller is based, what you booked, and the terms that apply.

- United Kingdom: The CAA’s guidance distinguishes routes involving ATOL holders, airlines, and trade associations in particular travel-agent failure situations. Check whether your booking and seller meet the conditions before relying on a route.
- British Columbia: Consumer Protection BC describes the Travel Assurance Fund for consumers who meet its conditions and have taken other required steps. It is a local scheme, not a general entitlement.
- Accommodation: In New Zealand, Consumer Protection says accommodation terms should cover payment, cancellation, refunds, and check-in, and that problems are generally raised with the property owner even when a third-party site was used. The specific terms and local law matter (New Zealand Consumer Protection: Accommodation).
7. If departure or check-in is close
Treat verification as urgent. Contact both the OTA and the provider through their fastest official channels and ask for a definite status in writing. If you are considering buying a replacement ticket or room, first clarify whether the original booking is live and whether it can be cancelled or refunded. Duplicate bookings can create additional costs, and there is no universal safe approach that applies to every booking.
Watch for requests to pay again
Do not respond to an unexpected demand for extra payment by using an unfamiliar link or unusual method. Verify the request through the OTA’s official app or website, or contact the provider using independently found details. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission warns that demands for wire transfers, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or some payment-app-only arrangements can be scam signs in travel-rental contexts (FTC: Avoid Scams When You Travel).
What matters most
Get two separate answers: the OTA’s written status and the underlying provider’s confirmation. Keep the records that show what you booked, what you paid, and what each party told you. If the service cannot be found, pursue the refund, payment dispute, or complaint route that applies to your booking and location rather than assuming one deadline or remedy fits everyone.
