If their face is covered or pressed against you, their chin is tucked to their chest, or they are slumped, take them out of the wrap and reposition them using the manufacturer’s instructions. Keep their face visible, nose and mouth clear, and chin off their chest. If they remain upset, take a break and check ordinary needs such as hunger, a diaper, temperature, or clothing irritation.
First, check breathing and position
Pause what you are doing and look at your baby’s face and breathing. Their face should be visible, with the nose and mouth unobstructed by wrap fabric, clothing, or your body. Keep the baby upright and supported, with the chin away from the chest and the back supported in a natural position.

If your baby is slumped, their face is covered or pressed against you, or their chin is forced down toward their chest, take them out of the wrap and correct the fit before trying again. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission warns: “Your baby should never be curled so that its chin is forced onto its chest as this can restrict breathing.” ACCC guidance on baby carriers, wraps and slings explains the safety risks and use guidance.

Check position frequently, even if your baby is quiet. Loose fabric can allow a baby to slump, and quietness does not establish that their position is safe. If you notice serious or urgent difficulty breathing, remove the baby from the wrap and seek emergency medical help.

What to do when the baby still seems uncomfortable
If your baby’s breathing and position look safe but they continue to cry, take them out of the wrap for a break. Crying can have several causes, and the sound alone does not reliably identify one. Check for feeding cues, a wet or dirty diaper, temperature discomfort, a need to burp, or clothing that may be irritating their skin.
Try ordinary soothing outside the wrap, such as gentle rocking, touch, talking or singing, or burping when appropriate. These are general ways to soothe a baby, not specific treatments for a carrier problem. Check the wrap’s fit and instructions before trying again
A wrap has to suit the baby’s age, size, and development, and it must be used as its manufacturer directs. Review the instructions for the exact wrap rather than improvising an insert or position the manufacturer does not recommend. If you cannot adjust the wrap so your baby’s face remains visible, the airway clear, and the back supported, stop using it until you have reviewed the instructions and fit.
If you are unsure whether the position is correct, ask a trained babywearing professional or your baby’s pediatrician to help check it. A different product is not a reliable fix for unexplained crying; any carrier still needs to be eligible for your baby and fit safely. When to ask a clinician
Seek your baby’s clinician’s advice before using a carrier if your baby was born prematurely or has breathing or other medical concerns. The AAP also advises contacting the pediatrician if a baby has a rectal temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, or if the baby is inconsolable or may be sick. Serious or urgent breathing difficulty needs emergency help.
These are general safety pointers, not an assessment of an individual infant. For concerns about your baby’s symptoms or whether carrier use is appropriate, follow guidance from their clinician.

If your baby falls asleep in the wrap
A wrap or sling is not a safe sleep surface. Monitor your baby, and move them as soon as possible to a safe sleep environment if they fall asleep in the carrier. Keep checking that their face remains visible and their airway unobstructed while you arrange the move.

Choosing or reassessing a wrap
When comparing wraps, focus on whether the product is suitable for your baby’s age, size, and development; whether its instructions are clear; whether it fits both caregiver and baby; and whether you can adjust it while keeping the baby visible and supported. No brand or model can replace correct use, and product choice alone cannot explain or resolve crying.
