Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If a new phone will not connect, first identify which layer is failing: SIM detection, network registration, or mobile data. “No SIM” or “Invalid SIM” usually points to the card, eSIM profile, lock, or activation. “Emergency calls only” or “No Service” means the phone sees a line but is not registering normally. If calls and texts work but data does not, check carrier settings, APN configuration, coverage, and outages. Follow the sequence below, recording the exact error message before changing anything.
Identify the failure before changing settings
Write down the precise message shown in the status bar or in Settings. Different messages lead to different fixes, and the wording gives carrier support a useful starting point.

| What you see | What it usually means | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| No SIM or Invalid SIM | The phone cannot read the physical SIM or has no usable eSIM profile. | Reseat or inspect the SIM; confirm the eSIM download and activation; check lock and compatibility. |
| Emergency calls only | No active SIM/eSIM, a damaged or blocked SIM, or failure to register on the carrier network. | Confirm the line is active on this phone, check SIM protection, coverage, and account status. |
| No Service | The phone may recognize the line but cannot register, possibly because of an outage, unsupported model, lock, or incorrect settings. | Restart, verify compatibility and coverage, install carrier updates, and check the account. |
| Calls and texts work, but mobile data does not | The line is registered; data settings, APN, plan permissions, or coverage are the likely issue. | Check mobile data, carrier settings, APN, and data service on the account. |
Samsung notes that “Emergency calls only” can appear when no active SIM/eSIM is installed or when the SIM is damaged. The exact menu names vary by phone model and software version.

Upgrades and number transfers
Do not assume that moving the handset automatically moves the line. For an upgrade or number transfer, the carrier may require you to activate the replacement SIM or complete a transfer in its app or account portal. AT&T says a new SIM must be activated for an upgrade or number transfer. T-Mobile similarly requires existing customers upgrading to activate the new SIM, and its SIM Protection feature may need to be disabled before a SIM transfer. Other plans have different rules, so use the current instructions for your carrier and plan.

- Complete any identity, security, or number-transfer confirmation.
- Wait for the activation result, then restart the phone and test a call, text, and mobile data.
If the old phone still works, keep it powered on until the carrier confirms the transfer. A transfer that is pending, blocked, or assigned to the old device will not be fixed by changing APN settings on the new one.
eSIM activation
An eSIM requires a supported phone, a carrier and plan that allow eSIM, and a downloaded carrier profile. Use Wi-Fi or a hotspot during setup when the carrier requires an internet connection. Depending on the carrier and model, the profile may arrive through a carrier app, an automatic prompt, the phone’s cellular-settings menu, or a carrier-provided QR code.
Carrier-specific instructions are not universal. Verizon’s current guidance says some Android devices need a QR code, while iPhone 12 and newer do not in its workflow. A different carrier or phone can use a different process. If the eSIM download stops, leave Wi-Fi connected, check that the plan is eligible, and restart the carrier’s activation flow rather than repeatedly deleting the profile.

Check carrier lock and network compatibility separately
“Unlocked” and “compatible” answer different questions. An unlocked phone is allowed to accept another carrier’s service, but it can still lack the network bands, VoLTE support, eSIM capability, software, or carrier features needed for reliable service.
Verify the lock status
If the phone came from another carrier, ask that carrier or the seller whether it is unlocked. On an iPhone, open Settings > General > About and look for Carrier Lock. “No SIM restrictions” indicates an unlocked device. Verizon says a phone must be unlocked from another carrier before activation on Verizon and that service can take up to 24 hours to activate after an unlock. Do not treat that waiting period as a hardware failure.
Run the intended carrier’s compatibility check
Use the carrier’s official model or IMEI checker with the exact model variant, not just the phone’s marketing name. A device may be accepted in one country or edition but rejected in another. Compatibility can depend on:

- What you get: 10 identical steel SIM ejector needles, one standard size that fits the eject hole of any phone or tablet with a physical SIM slot, so a spare is always within reach
- Right for your device: Android and Samsung Galaxy phones, cellular iPads and tablets, and any iPhone that still uses a physical SIM, one needle works for all of them
- How to use: push the needle straight into the small hole next to the SIM drawer until it pops open, then lift out the drawer, no force, twisting or technical skill needed
- The difference vs paperclips: a rigid one piece steel needle holds its shape where bent wire flexes, so it presses the release cleanly without scratching or jamming the port
- Ten spares, zero hunting: keep one at home, at the office, in the car, in your wallet and in every travel bag, and hand extras to family or coworkers who always lose theirs
- Exact model and regional variant
- Supported LTE and 5G bands
- VoLTE support and required software version
- Physical-SIM or eSIM capability
- Carrier-specific voice, text, Wi-Fi calling, or roaming features
Google Fi’s checker, for example, can report full compatibility, compatibility with limitations, or “not compatible.” Its Android network requirements include Android 7.0 or later, LTE bands 2 and 4, and VoLTE; newer software may be needed for full feature support. Those are Fi-specific requirements, not a universal Android standard. An “unlocked” result alone is therefore not proof that every feature will work.
Fix a physical SIM that the phone does not recognize
- Power down if the manufacturer requires it. Some models permit hot removal, but following the phone’s instructions avoids damage or a corrupted read.
- Remove the tray carefully. Use the supplied ejector tool if available. A generic tool is only needed when the included one is missing; it cannot solve an activation or account problem.
- Inspect the card. Look for cracks, bent edges, corrosion, or deep scratches on the contacts.
- Reinsert it in the marked orientation. Make sure the cut corner aligns with the tray and that the tray closes completely. Never force a card or use a tray from another model.
- Restart and recheck the status. Give the phone a minute after booting to read the card and register.
If “No SIM” or “Invalid SIM” remains, ask the carrier to test the card or issue a replacement. A failed SIM can look identical to a phone fault. If a known-good SIM also fails in the same slot, the manufacturer’s diagnostic or repair route becomes more appropriate.
Check SIM protection
Some carriers enable SIM-protection features that block moving a SIM to a different device. Samsung specifically advises checking whether this protection is enabled when a Galaxy will not activate. The carrier, not a phone setting, may have to disable it. On many Galaxy models, SIM information is under Settings > About phone > Status information > SIM card status; wording varies by model and software.

When the SIM is recognized but service is missing
Restart and install carrier settings
Restart the phone after activation, an unlock, or a SIM change. On iPhone, open Settings > General > About while connected to the internet. If a carrier-settings update is offered, install it. These updates can provide network parameters that a newly activated line needs.
On Samsung phones and other Android models, check the mobile-network settings for the active SIM, preferred network type, and data permissions. Menu labels differ, so search Settings for “mobile network” or “SIM manager” if the listed path does not match your model.

Reset mobile-network settings only after simpler checks
An incorrect network configuration can prevent registration. Samsung lists resetting mobile-network settings as a troubleshooting option. Use it only after confirming activation, lock status, compatibility, and coverage. A network reset can remove saved cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or VPN-related settings depending on the phone, so read the on-screen warning and be prepared to reconnect to Wi-Fi.

Check coverage and outages
Test in an area where the carrier normally has service and check the carrier’s outage information. A new phone cannot register during a local outage, and Apple’s eSIM guidance specifically recommends checking coverage and service interruptions. If another phone on the same carrier also has no signal in the same location, an outage or coverage problem is more likely than a defective new handset.

Verify the line and phone data switches
- Confirm Mobile Data is enabled.
- On dual-SIM phones, select the newly activated line as the data line.
- Turn off Airplane Mode, then restart.
- Check whether the plan has a data allowance, a spending block, or a pending activation.
Use only the intended carrier’s APN settings
A bring-your-own phone may need the carrier’s APN (Access Point Name) values before data works. T-Mobile specifically notes that APN settings may need to be added for data on a bring-your-own device. APNs are carrier-specific: copying values from a different provider can disable data or multimedia messaging. Obtain the current values from the carrier’s support channel, enter them exactly, save, and restart. If the carrier automatically supplies an APN, do not overwrite it without a reason.
Separate a device problem from an account problem
| Evidence | More likely cause | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The phone says No SIM with multiple known-good cards. | SIM reader, tray, or phone hardware. | Run manufacturer diagnostics or request service after the carrier confirms the line is active. |
| The carrier checker rejects the exact model. | Incompatible variant or unsupported features. | Use a supported device or a carrier that supports that model; an unlock will not add missing bands. |
| The phone is unlocked, compatible, and the account shows pending activation. | Carrier provisioning or transfer state. | Have the carrier complete activation; do not keep resetting the phone. |
| Another phone on the same account also loses service. | Outage, coverage, or account-level block. | Check outage status and contact the carrier. |
| Calls work but data fails only on a bring-your-own phone. | APN, data-line selection, or plan permission. | Use the carrier’s APN and verify the data feature on the line. |
What to give carrier support
Persistent activation failures belong with the carrier that owns the line. Ask support to check each item explicitly:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Whether the number and plan are fully activated on the new device
- Whether provisioning is pending, blocked, or still attached to the old phone
- Device eligibility and the exact IMEI or model variant
- Carrier-lock status and any required unlock waiting period
- SIM-protection status and the correct physical-SIM or eSIM transfer state
- Coverage, outage, and account-level service blocks
For eSIM help, have the phone number, carrier account password or PIN, and the device’s IMEI or EID ready. Apple recommends recording the exact error before contacting support. Share credentials only through the carrier’s secure app, website, or verified support channel; do not post an IMEI, EID, account PIN, or QR code publicly.
If the carrier confirms that the line is correctly provisioned, the device is compatible and unlocked, and a replacement SIM or fresh eSIM also fails, use the manufacturer’s diagnostics or service process. That evidence is stronger than simply seeing “No Service” once in a poor-coverage location.
Quick Recap
Quick decision checklist
- Record whether the message is No SIM, Invalid SIM, Emergency calls only, No Service, or data-only failure.
- Confirm the number and plan are active on the new phone, not merely on the old handset.
- For eSIM, use Wi-Fi, confirm carrier support, and complete the carrier’s app, prompt, settings, or QR-code flow.
- Check the phone’s lock status and run the intended carrier’s exact-model or IMEI compatibility test.
- Reseat or replace a physical SIM; check SIM protection if the carrier uses it.
- Restart, install offered carrier settings, and verify mobile-network selections.
- Check coverage and outages; for data-only failures, verify the data line and carrier APN.
- Escalate with the exact error, model, IMEI/EID, and account details through a secure carrier channel.
