What to Do If Your New Laptop Runs Hot or Its Fans Are Loud

A new laptop can feel warm and make audible fan noise during demanding work, charging, or initial setup; that alone does not prove it is faulty. First give it clear airflow on a hard, flat surface, then check what it is doing and whether an app is using substantial CPU. Persistent fast fans during light use, temperature warnings, or grinding, whining, or ticking noises are reasons to contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.

When warmth and fan noise are normal

Laptops use fans to move heat away from components. Video compression, graphics-heavy games, and other demanding work can make a Mac’s fans audible; Apple describes rushing airflow as a normal part of cooling. Microsoft likewise says Surface fan speed follows workload, and a Surface may feel warmer while charging or handling many tasks.

A new device can also be busy in the background. Microsoft says a Surface may check for and install operating-system and app updates and sync email, calendar, and OneDrive during its first 24 hours; fan speed may be higher until that work finishes. This is Surface-specific guidance, not a guaranteed settling-in period for every laptop.

Room temperature and placement affect cooling too. Apple advises using a Mac laptop in ambient temperatures of 10–35°C (50–95°F). Microsoft says Surface fans may need to run more when the ambient temperature is above 25°C (77°F). These are separate vendor recommendations, not universal temperature limits for all laptops. See Apple’s Mac operating-temperature guidance and Microsoft’s Surface fan guidance.

Try these checks in order

  1. Clear the airflow. Put the laptop on a stable, hard, flat surface such as a desk or table. Move it off bedding, cushions, or papers, and remove anything covering the vents. Do not insert objects into vents. A stand is optional if it helps create a stable, unobstructed setup; it is not a guaranteed cooling fix.
  2. Check the workload and charging. Note whether the laptop is charging, installing updates, syncing or indexing after setup, gaming, rendering video, or running a compute-heavy app. These activities can increase heat and fan activity. On Surface, initial background setup can continue during the first 24 hours, according to Microsoft.
  3. Look for an app using substantial CPU. On a Surface, open Task Manager and sort processes by CPU usage; close applications or processes you do not need. On a Mac, open Activity Monitor and look for unexpected CPU use or a process that appears stuck. If the laptop stays warm during light work or its fans run for a long time, Apple recommends checking Activity Monitor. Avoid force-closing processes you do not recognize unless you have confirmed they are safe to stop.
  4. Install the appropriate updates. Apple recommends installing macOS software updates. For Surface, check the Surface app and Windows Update for driver and firmware status. For another brand, follow that laptop’s official instructions for operating-system, driver, and firmware updates rather than assuming the Surface steps apply.
  5. Consider a quieter power setting if available. Microsoft recommends the Recommended power mode on Surface to help limit fan speed. Apple says Low Power Mode can reduce fan noise on supported Mac models with active cooling; availability depends on model and software. Apple’s High Power Mode can increase fan speed and noise. Lower-noise settings may limit performance, so use them when quieter operation matters more than maximum speed. Details: Apple’s Mac power-mode guidance.
  6. Restart, then reassess. Once updates or demanding setup work have completed, restart the laptop and check it again on a clear, hard surface during light use. If the fan remains fast or the laptop stays unusually hot, contact support rather than opening the machine or attempting an unverified repair.

How to tell when the noise needs attention

Ordinary airflow is different from a mechanical sound. Microsoft Support says, “Noises like grinding, whining, or ticking are abnormal.” If you hear one of these, or see a temperature warning, stop treating the issue as routine fan behavior and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service route.

Persistent heat or fast fan activity during light use also warrants support when it continues after you have cleared the vents, checked workload, installed relevant updates, and restarted. Apple advises contacting Apple or an authorized service provider for Mac operating-temperature issues that persist. For a new laptop from another maker, use the manufacturer’s official support route or the seller where appropriate, and check the warranty terms for your country and purchase; eligibility and service options depend on those details.

Do not rely on unsupported third-party temperature apps to diagnose a hardware problem. Apple cautions that such apps do not measure the external case temperature and should not be used to diagnose potential hardware issues.
