Do not compress fragile goods, stack cargo into an unstable tower, or drive above the posted ratings. Repack and prioritize only when capacity remains; otherwise choose a second trip, a larger vehicle, an approved trailer, another suitable vehicle, professional movers, or storage and disposal for lower-priority items.
The safest choice depends on distance, schedule, rental terms, payload, towing capability, availability and the value of what remains. Work through the checks below before changing equipment or setting off.

First, identify what “too small” means
A truck can look full while still having usable capacity, or it can reach its weight limit with empty-looking space. Treat those as different problems.
When cubic space is the bottleneck
Large sofas, mattresses, appliances and oddly shaped furniture can consume the available floor area and ceiling height even when the load is not especially heavy. Measure the remaining opening, aisle and ceiling clearance. A piece that cannot pass through the rear or side door is a dimensional problem, not something that can be solved by tighter packing.

When payload is the bottleneck
Payload is the weight of occupants, fuel and cargo that the vehicle can carry. Check the actual truck’s label inside the driver’s door opening and the rental agreement. U-Haul’s truck operator manual says not to exceed the vehicle’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or gross axle weight rating (GAWR). Advertised cargo volume does not replace those ratings.
When access or load security is the bottleneck
A load may technically fit but block the doors, emergency equipment, mirrors or a safe path to retrieve essentials. Cargo that can slide, fall or crush fragile items is not safely loaded. You need usable, secure space—not merely a closed door.
Stop loading and run a five-minute safety check
- Pause the loading line. Keep the rear door open and prevent additional items from being placed on top of an unstable stack.
- Read the equipment information. Locate the GVWR, GAWR and payload information on the truck label. Read any trailer or dolly label as well, and compare it with the rental contract.
- Estimate the remaining load. Separate items that are already inside from items still at the property. Note especially heavy objects such as safes, workshop equipment, dense boxes of books and large appliances.
- Inspect the load path. Confirm that doors close without force, weight is distributed across the floor, and tie-down points can restrain the cargo.
- Choose a plan before driving. If the remaining items cannot be loaded within the ratings and securement requirements, stop and arrange another transport method.
Do not rely on how the suspension looks, whether the tires appear inflated, or whether the truck can still accelerate. Those observations do not establish legal or safe capacity.
Repack the truck only when rated capacity remains
Repacking is useful when the arrangement is inefficient. It cannot create more payload or make an item’s dimensions smaller.
Load the largest stable pieces first
Place major furniture and appliances against the front wall, keeping weight low and as close to the centerline as practical. Build a broad, level base rather than a narrow column. Leave access to doors and keep a planned section for items that must be unloaded first.
Use voids without creating pressure points
Soft, protected goods can occupy spaces inside sturdy furniture or between legs when they will not be crushed. Wrap surfaces, pad corners and prevent contents from shifting. Never wedge a fragile box under a heavy appliance or use a door as a structural restraint.

Disassemble what is designed to come apart
Remove table legs, shelving, bed rails and detachable handles when the manufacturer’s design permits it. Keep fasteners in labeled bags attached to the relevant item. Do not dismantle gas appliances, powered equipment or structural components unless qualified instructions allow it.

Glass, electronics, liquids and breakables need cushioning and a position where heavier cargo cannot fall onto them. Do not transport prohibited or unsafe materials simply because a gap is available; follow the rental agreement and applicable transport rules.
Secure every layer
Use rated straps and tie-down points to stop movement, and check them after the first part of the journey. Straps restrain cargo but do not add volume or payload capacity. If you cannot secure an item without crushing another item or blocking a door, it does not belong in that position.
Prioritize what travels now
When some goods must remain behind, make the decision deliberately instead of letting the last items loaded determine the outcome. FMCSA advises prioritizing goods in advance when some may be left behind.
Category 1: arrival essentials
- Medication, identification, documents and valuables.
- Basic clothing, bedding, toiletries and child or pet supplies.
- Tools or equipment needed to make the new home usable.
- Items that are expensive, irreplaceable or difficult to replace quickly.
Category 2: useful but replaceable
Furniture, duplicate kitchenware, seasonal goods and décor can travel in a later run, a small shipment or a storage unit if the additional cost and delay are acceptable.

Category 3: defer, donate, sell or discard
Compare the cost of moving an item with its replacement price, storage cost and urgency. A low-value item that consumes a large amount of space may be the least economical cargo. Arrange donation or sale before departure where possible, and confirm that a recipient can collect the item.

Choose among the practical transport options
| Option | May suit | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Repack and prioritize | The load is inefficiently arranged and the truck still has rated capacity | Remaining payload, dimensions, fragile goods and load security |
| Second trip | A local move where time and rental terms permit another run | Rental duration, mileage, fuel, route, access and schedule |
| Larger truck | A one-trip move where a suitable vehicle is available | Usable dimensions, payload label, availability and total cost |
| Cargo trailer | A rental combination explicitly approved for towing | Tow vehicle, hitch, trailer rating, cargo limit, contract, route and weather |
| Another vehicle | Remaining items fit safely and are suitable for that vehicle | Vehicle payload, visibility, securement, drivers and insurance terms |
| Professional mover | Self-hauling is impractical or delivery timing matters | Written cost, service type, pickup and delivery dates, and interstate registration |
| Store, donate, sell or defer | Extra transport costs exceed the value or urgency of some items | Storage, delivery timing, replacement cost and donation options |
No option is automatically best. Compare money, time, route distance, equipment availability, payload and towing capacity, driving difficulty, delivery urgency and the risk of damage.
When a second trip is the sensible answer
A second run avoids towing complexity and lets you use the truck you already have. It works best for a local move with flexible access and enough time before the rental return.
Confirm the rental period, mileage allowance, fuel requirement and return location before committing. Add the driving time, loading labor, tolls, parking and the risk that an elevator, loading dock or building reservation will no longer be available. If the route is long or the schedule is fixed, a larger vehicle may cost less than an extra day and duplicate travel.

A larger truck can be the cleanest one-trip solution, but compare more than advertised cubic footage. Verify interior length, width, height, door opening, wheel-well intrusion and the payload label for the specific vehicle you will receive. A vehicle with more volume is not useful if its payload rating is inadequate for dense cargo.
Ask the rental provider whether changing equipment alters the contract, pickup location, deposit, mileage package, insurance or return time. Reserve the replacement before unloading the original truck if availability is limited.
Trailers and towing require a separate compatibility check
Do not assume a trailer is safe merely because the hitch can be attached. The tow vehicle, hitch, trailer rating and cargo weight must work together, and the rental provider must approve the combination.

U-Haul says it calculates recommended trailer cargo weight using the specific tow vehicle, hitch rating and trailer. It also advises stopping safely to reposition cargo if a trailer fishtails or whips. If sway begins, reduce speed smoothly, avoid abrupt steering or braking, and pull over only where it is safe to inspect the load.
Weather, grades, tight turns, backing distance and your towing experience can make a trailer a poor choice even when the ratings appear adequate. Check lighting, safety chains, tire condition, load distribution and the contract before departure.
As a provider-specific example, U-Haul states that towing a 6-by-12-foot cargo trailer with its 26-foot truck offers 18% more space. That figure applies to the combination described by U-Haul; it is not a general percentage for other trucks and trailers.
Using another vehicle
A car, van or pickup can carry a small remainder if the items fit without blocking the driver’s view or exceeding that vehicle’s payload. Use enclosed space for weather-sensitive goods, protect upholstery and secure every item so it cannot become a projectile during braking.
Check who is permitted to drive, what insurance applies, and whether the vehicle owner or rental agreement restricts moving cargo or towing. Do not put heavy objects on a roof rack unless the rack and vehicle are rated for them and the load can be secured without affecting handling.
Hiring movers or adding services
If you have hired movers, call before the crew leaves and ask for the exact service options, dates and final price in writing. FMCSA lists options that may affect capacity or scheduling, including space reservation, expedited service, exclusive use of a vehicle and guaranteed service dates. Availability and charges depend on the mover and your agreement.

- PRO-GRADE PROTECTION — Crafted from high-density, water-resistant woven fabric with smooth #5 dual zippers. These aren't flimsy one-move bags; they are designed for years of reuse. Whether it's light rain during transit or long-term storage in a dusty attic, your clothes and linens stay pristine and protected.
For an interstate move arranged through a broker, FMCSA says the broker must use an interstate mover registered with FMCSA. Ask for the moving company’s identity, registration information, service scope and the treatment of any goods that cannot fit. Clarify whether the quote covers a second vehicle, a second pickup, storage, shuttle service, stairs, long carries or a change in delivery date.
How to decide using total cost and risk
Write down the real cost of each workable plan rather than comparing only the advertised rental price.
- Second trip: additional rental time, mileage, fuel, tolls, parking and labor.
- Larger truck: price difference, availability, extra fuel, insurance and unfamiliar-vehicle driving.
- Trailer: rental, hitch or equipment charges, fuel impact, route limitations and increased driving difficulty.
- Another vehicle: owner or rental cost, insurance, drivers and securement supplies.
- Professional mover: written transportation price plus accessorial charges and any storage or expedited-service fee.
- Leave items behind: storage, replacement, donation or resale consequences and the cost of returning later.
Choose the plan that keeps every load within its ratings and arrives when needed. Saving money by overloading can turn into tire, suspension, cargo-damage, contract or roadside costs.

Before driving: a final checklist
- Truck, trailer and hitch ratings match the actual equipment and cargo.
- GVWR and GAWR are not exceeded.
- Heavy items are low, distributed and secured.
- Doors, mirrors, lights and emergency access are unobstructed.
- Fragile goods are padded and separated from crushing loads.
- Trailer lights, safety chains, tires and coupler are checked when towing.
- Rental changes and driver permissions are confirmed in writing.
- Essential documents, medication and valuables are in the cab or another controlled location.
- You know where you can safely stop to recheck straps and cargo.
Recheck securement after the first portion of the trip and whenever the load settles. If anything shifts, stop in a safe place and correct it before continuing.
Bottom line: do not make an unsafe load fit
Pause, identify whether space, dimensions or weight is the true limit, and use the truck’s actual ratings rather than its advertised volume. Repack only when capacity remains; otherwise prioritize the load and select a second trip, larger truck, approved trailer, another suitable vehicle, professional movers or storage and disposal. The right answer is the one that keeps the equipment within its ratings, protects the cargo and meets your delivery deadline.
