Then use Motorola’s update screen, retry on dependable Wi‑Fi with at least 75% battery and adequate free storage, and check whether your model, region, and carrier are still waiting for a staged release. A missing update is not automatically evidence of a faulty phone.
Start by identifying where the update process stops
The correct fix depends on the failure stage. “No update available,” “stuck downloading,” and “installation failed” are different situations with different next steps.

| What you see | What it usually means | Best next action |
|---|---|---|
| No update is offered | The rollout may not yet include your model, region, software channel, or carrier. | Verify the phone’s model and software details, then check again through Motorola’s update route. |
| Download remains pending or never completes | The connection, battery, storage, or update service may not have completed the transfer. | Use stable Wi‑Fi, charge the phone, free storage, restart if it remains responsive, and retry. |
| Download finishes but installation fails | The phone has received the package but cannot complete installation. | Record the exact error and whether the failure happens before or during installation; then contact Motorola or the carrier for model-specific help. |
Do not apply a procedure for one stage to another. For example, waiting for a staged rollout will not repair an installation error, while repeatedly restarting will not make an update appear before Motorola or the carrier has authorized it.

Check the official Motorola update screen
Motorola’s general support route is:
- Open Settings.
- Go to System, then Advanced if that submenu is present.
- Tap System updates.
- Choose Check for updates.
- If an update is offered, follow the prompts shown on the phone.
Menu names vary by Motorola model and Android version. On some phones the update control is reached through About phone, or the intermediate Advanced label is absent. Use the labels displayed on your device rather than forcing an exact path from another model.

Before contacting support, open About phone and note the Android version and build information. Those details identify the software currently installed and help support distinguish a normal rollout delay from a failed update.
Read the status wording carefully. “Your system is up to date” can mean that no newer build has been released to your particular phone yet; it does not necessarily mean every Motorola device has received the same Android version. A notice that an update is available is a different condition from a notification that the phone is preparing or verifying a download. Save a screenshot if the wording is unclear.
Why won’t my Motorola phone update when no update is listed?
Rollouts are staged
Motorola sends Android updates to eligible phones, but distribution is not necessarily simultaneous. Release timing can depend on the phone model, region, distribution channel, testing, carrier certification, and requests from partners. Two owners of the same model can therefore see an update at different times, even in the same broad market.
Google likewise says Android schedules vary by device, manufacturer, and carrier. Check eligibility for your exact model and carrier before concluding that the phone is broken or unsupported. An unspecified Motorola phone cannot be assumed to qualify for a particular Android release.
Staged distribution also explains why another owner may report an update while your Settings app does not. The comparison is useful only if the model variant, carrier, country, and software channel match. A phone bought unlocked may follow a different schedule from a carrier-issued version, even when the retail name is identical.
Security updates and Android upgrades are different
Motorola distinguishes a security update from an Android OS upgrade. A security update keeps the current Android version while applying security fixes. An OS upgrade introduces a newer Android version. If you are expecting a version change but the phone has only received a security patch, that does not mean the update process failed.
Carrier certification can delay availability
Carrier certification and partner involvement can affect when an otherwise eligible update is released. A phone purchased for, or configured to use, a particular carrier may not receive the same build at the same time as an unlocked or differently certified variant. Record the carrier and country when checking availability.
Do not treat a missing update as proof that repeatedly tapping Check for updates will accelerate the rollout. The check can confirm the current status, but it cannot authorize a build that Motorola, the carrier, or a distribution channel has not made available to that device.
Prepare the phone before trying again
Use dependable Wi‑Fi
Connect to a reliable Wi‑Fi network before checking or downloading the update. Motorola recommends Wi‑Fi to avoid mobile-data charges, and Google also recommends Wi‑Fi before updating. If the connection repeatedly drops, the download may pause or fail even though the phone itself is functioning normally. Move within reliable coverage or try another trusted Wi‑Fi network rather than repeatedly starting the same transfer on an unstable connection.

Keep the phone connected to that network while the package is being obtained. A download that progresses slowly is not automatically defective; the useful distinction is whether it eventually advances or repeatedly stops with an error. Note which network you used so support can tell a connection problem from a software or eligibility problem.
Charge to at least 75 percent
Google advises charging the device to at least 75 percent before beginning an update. Keep the phone connected to its charger if practical during the preparation and installation stages. A sufficiently charged battery reduces the chance that the phone will postpone the operation for power protection.
Check available storage
Open Settings > Storage and review the available space. Google says an Android phone can start experiencing problems when less than 10 percent of its storage is free. That figure is a general Android device-health warning, not a Motorola-published minimum amount of space required for every update.
If storage is close to full, remove or move items you can safely replace—such as already-backed-up photos, downloaded videos, or unused apps—then restart the update check. Do not delete personal data you have not backed up simply to make room. The exact space an individual update needs depends on the model and release, and no universal Motorola minimum is established here.
Check storage before and after a failed attempt. A package may have downloaded partially, but there is no universal Motorola instruction for locating or deleting such a package on every model. Avoid removing system files or using a cleanup procedure designed for a different device.
Restart only as a simple retry
If the phone is responsive, a normal restart is a reasonable troubleshooting step before checking again. Google’s general update help includes restarting when no update is found. A restart can clear a transient stuck state, but it is not a guaranteed repair and does not change rollout eligibility.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the normal power-menu restart rather than forcing repeated shutdowns while an installation is actively applying. If the phone is already in an installation screen, follow the on-screen instructions and document any error after it returns to normal operation.
If your Motorola update is stuck downloading
Let Android retry automatically
When an Android update starts downloading but does not finish, Google says the phone automatically tries again over the next few days and notifies you. Open that notification when it appears, or return to the update screen in Settings to check the status.
During this period, leave the phone connected to dependable Wi‑Fi, keep the battery charged, and maintain adequate free storage. Avoid repeatedly interrupting a transfer that is making progress. If the same download failure continues after the automatic retry period, capture the precise message before contacting support.

Separate a transfer problem from an availability delay
A progress indicator that never starts, a “pending” message, and a download that stops partway through are transfer symptoms. They should be documented as such when you seek help. By contrast, a screen that simply reports that no update is available may be normal staged distribution. Telling support which of these occurred prevents an eligibility question from being treated as a network failure, or vice versa.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do not improvise a package-deletion procedure
There is no universal Motorola method established for deleting a partially downloaded update package or forcing a reinstall across all models. Menu options and recovery procedures can be device-specific. If the download repeatedly fails, ask Motorola or your carrier for instructions for the exact model instead of deleting system files or applying a procedure intended for another phone.
What to record while it is stuck
Note the percentage, wording, and approximate time at which progress stops. Record whether the phone remains responsive, whether Wi‑Fi stays connected, and how much storage and battery were available. These observations help separate a stalled transfer from a phone that has already downloaded the package and is waiting for installation.
If the update downloads but will not install
Record the failure precisely
Write down the exact on-screen error, or take a screenshot if the phone permits it. Note whether the failure occurs while verifying, restarting, or installing, and whether the phone returns to the previous Android version afterward. Also record the time, Wi‑Fi network type, battery level, and free storage shown when you tried. These observations are more useful to support than a general statement that “the update does not work.”
Do not assume the update can be reversed
“You can’t downgrade to a previous software version after installing an update.”
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
That statement appears in Motorola Support guidance. Treat an installation as a one-way software change unless Motorola provides a model-specific alternative. Do not install an unofficial package or attempt a downgrade merely because the update failed; an incompatible image can create a more serious problem.
Use model-specific guidance for persistent installation errors
Installation failures can depend on the phone variant, carrier software, Android build, and the particular release. The general update screen does not provide one repair that applies to every Motorola device. After the basic connection, battery, and storage checks, escalate with the complete device information listed below.
If the phone starts normally on its existing software after the failed attempt, do not assume that the newer version was partially installed. Confirm the Android version and build in About phone, then report what the phone actually shows. If the phone remains on an installation screen or displays a recovery message, preserve the wording and contact Motorola or the carrier rather than trying an unverified recovery sequence.

- The current Android version and build number from About phone.
- Available storage and approximate battery level during the attempt.
- Whether you used Wi‑Fi, and whether the connection was stable.
- The exact error text or a screenshot.
- The failure stage: no update offered, download stalled, download failed, or installation failed.
- Whether the phone has retried automatically and how many days the problem has continued.
Contact Motorola support or the carrier after the preparation and retry steps do not resolve the problem. Google directs users with continuing issues on customized Android versions to the device manufacturer, while Motorola identifies carrier certification and partner involvement as factors in rollout timing. Neither source establishes a single repair that can be promised for every model.
Use the carrier as well as Motorola when the phone is carrier-issued or the question concerns certification or availability. Include the country because release timing and distribution can differ by region. Asking for “the Android update” without the model, build, and carrier leaves out the information needed to identify the correct software track.
Should you factory-reset the phone?
A factory data reset should not be your first response to a missing, stalled, or failed update. Google warns that a factory reset removes all data from the phone, and Motorola guidance likewise warns that downloaded apps and user data are deleted. If support specifically directs you to reset, back up anything you need first and confirm that you know the account credentials required to set the phone up again.
The available guidance does not establish a factory reset as a first-line fix for an unsuccessful system update. Resetting before documenting the error can erase information support needs and create a separate recovery task without addressing a staged rollout or carrier certification delay.

A reset also cannot make an ineligible or not-yet-certified update appear. Consider it only after support has identified it as appropriate for the exact model and failure, not as a way to bypass Motorola’s rollout process.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision path
- Open the update screen. Use Settings > (System > Advanced) > System updates > Check for updates, adapting the labels to your model.
- If no update appears, verify timing. Check the exact model, region, and carrier context. Treat staged availability as a possibility rather than proof of a phone fault.
- If an update is offered, prepare first. Connect to reliable Wi‑Fi, charge to at least 75 percent, and check storage.
- If the download stalls, retry safely. Keep the phone on Wi‑Fi and charged. Android may automatically try again over the next few days and notify you.
- If installation fails, document it. Save the exact error, stage, Android build, carrier, region, battery, storage, and connection details.
- Escalate with those details. Ask Motorola or the carrier for model-specific instructions. Do not use an unverified downgrade, package-deletion, or recovery procedure.
- Consider a reset only when directed. Back up first because a factory reset erases apps and user data.
When is the phone probably not broken?
The phone may be operating normally when the update screen reports no available release, the model is eligible but still within a staged rollout, or the carrier has not completed certification. It is also normal for a failed download to receive an automatic retry notification rather than an immediate permanent error. Those situations call for verification and patience, not destructive troubleshooting.
A persistent, repeatable error during download or installation is different. Once Wi‑Fi, battery, and storage have been checked and the exact message has been recorded, the efficient next step is device-specific support. Provide the complete context rather than repeatedly forcing the same update attempt.
Frequently asked questions
Why is no Android update available for my Motorola?
Motorola and Google account for model, region, carrier, testing, distribution channel, and certification when scheduling updates. Your phone may be waiting in a staged rollout or may follow a different software track from another variant. Check the exact model, country, carrier, Android version, and build before treating the missing update as a fault.

Google recommends charging an Android device to at least 75 percent before beginning an update. Keeping it connected to a charger during preparation and installation is sensible when practical, but the 75 percent figure is guidance for readiness, not a guarantee that an update will install.
Best Value
Can low storage stop a Motorola update?
It can contribute to Android problems. Google says a phone can start having issues when less than 10 percent of storage is free. That is a general device-health warning, not a universal Motorola minimum for every update. Check Settings > Storage, safely clear backed-up or replaceable items, and avoid deleting unbacked-up personal data.
What happens if my Motorola update download fails halfway?
Google says Android automatically tries again over the next few days and notifies you. Keep the phone on reliable Wi‑Fi, charged, and supplied with adequate storage. If the same failure repeats, save the exact message and contact Motorola or the carrier with the model and software details.
Should I delete the partial update file?
Do not assume there is one safe deletion method for every Motorola model. The available general guidance does not establish a universal procedure for deleting a partial package or forcing a reinstall. Ask support for instructions specific to your model instead of deleting system files.
Can I downgrade if the update causes a problem?
Motorola Support states, “You can’t downgrade to a previous software version after installing an update.” Treat installation as a one-way change unless Motorola gives model-specific instructions. Do not use an unofficial image or downgrade procedure.
Will a factory reset fix an update failure?
It is not a first-line fix established by the general guidance. A factory reset removes apps and user data, so it can create additional work without resolving a staged rollout, carrier certification delay, or unsupported model. Back up first and reset only if Motorola or the carrier specifically directs you to do so.
Who should I contact when the update still fails?
Contact Motorola support or your carrier, especially when the phone is carrier-issued. Provide the complete model and variant, country, carrier, Android version and build, storage, battery, Wi‑Fi conditions, exact error, and failure stage. Those details allow support to distinguish availability, download, and installation problems.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is no Android update available for my Motorola?
The release may still be staged for your model, region, carrier, or software channel. Motorola and Google say timing also depends on testing and carrier certification. Verify the exact variant and carrier before assuming the phone is faulty.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How much battery and storage should I have?
Google recommends at least 75% battery. It also warns that Android phones can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free; that is general guidance, not a universal Motorola update minimum.
What should I do when the download stops?
Use dependable Wi‑Fi, keep the phone charged, and let Android retry. Google says a failed download is automatically retried over the next few days. If it continues, record the exact error and contact Motorola or the carrier.
Can I delete a partial update or downgrade?
There is no universal Motorola procedure for deleting a partial package. Motorola Support also says you cannot downgrade to a previous software version after installing an update. Request model-specific instructions instead.
Should I factory-reset before contacting support?
No. A reset erases apps and user data and is not established as a first-line update fix. Back up first and reset only if Motorola or the carrier specifically recommends it.
The Bottom Line
Check the update through Settings > (System > Advanced) > System updates > Check for updates, adapting the labels to your Motorola model. If nothing is offered, check staged availability, region, and carrier certification. If a download is available, use reliable Wi‑Fi, charge to at least 75%, and free storage if needed. Let Android retry a stalled download, document any installation error, and contact Motorola or your carrier with the exact model, build, region, carrier, and failure details. Avoid unverified recovery steps and factory-reset only when directed.
