If your mortgage servicer rejects your homeowners insurance policy, ask it to identify the exact problem and the deadline to fix it in writing. Then compare that requirement with your loan documents and policy, have your insurer confirm disputed details if needed, and promptly send the requested proof through the servicer’s specified channel. Keep records, and do not ignore a force-placed insurance notice while you dispute the rejection.
This is general information for U.S. mortgage borrowers. Whether a policy qualifies depends on your loan contract, policy terms, and circumstances; the steps below cannot decide an individual contract dispute.

Find out exactly why the policy was rejected
Do not guess at the problem or assume the policy is inadequate just because a document was not accepted. A servicer may be unable to verify the information submitted, or the coverage may not meet a requirement in the loan contract. Ask for the precise discrepancy and the deadline to cure it. Federal rules address when a servicer may reject submitted insurance information and what evidence it may require (CFPB, 12 CFR § 1024.37).
Call if that could speed things up, but follow up in writing. Ask the servicer to identify the applicable loan-contract requirement or written standard, the specific information or coverage term it says is missing, and how to submit corrected proof. Depending on the loan and policy, useful items to ask about may include:

- The insured name and property address.
- The policy’s effective and expiration dates.
- Dwelling or hazard coverage, limits, and deductible.
- Mortgagee or loss-payee information.
- Whether the insurer or agent must verify the information directly.
These are questions to clarify, not requirements that apply to every mortgage. Save the rejection and any force-placed insurance notices, your policy documents, portal confirmations, and a dated record of calls, including whom you spoke with.
Check the policy and get the insurer involved
Compare the servicer’s written request with your mortgage contract, declarations page, and policy. The declarations page summarizes key policy details, but the policy itself may contain terms or exclusions that matter. If the servicer says information cannot be verified, ask your insurer or agent to confirm the disputed details directly to the servicer and tell you when and how that confirmation was sent. Regulation X allows rejection when the information is not confirmed by the insurer or agent, or when the coverage terms fail the loan contract’s requirements (CFPB, 12 CFR § 1024.37).

Submit proof in the form the servicer requests
Send the requested written evidence promptly using the servicer’s stated channel and format. Depending on what it needs, acceptable evidence may include a declarations page, insurance certificate, policy, or similar written confirmation. Include the loan or account identifier and property address so the documents can be matched to your mortgage. Keep an exact copy of what you sent and proof of delivery or upload confirmation.
Under Regulation X, once the servicer receives evidence showing that compliant coverage is in place, it generally must cancel force-placed insurance within 15 days and refund or remove charges for any overlapping coverage (CFPB, 12 CFR § 1024.37). The rule’s application depends on the circumstances, so retain the evidence and follow up if the servicer does not update the account.

If the policy does not meet the loan requirements, correct the gap
Ask your insurer whether the problem can be resolved with a correction, endorsement, or reinstatement. If not, shop for a replacement that satisfies the lender’s written requirements, and send proof as soon as coverage is issued. The CFPB says borrowers can use the force-placed notice period to shop for coverage and provide evidence (CFPB, “Your mortgage servicer must comply with federal rules”).
When comparing policies, consider more than premium. Check the required coverage and limits, covered hazards and exclusions, deductible, effective dates and continuity, insurer verification, and the total premium. Standard homeowners insurance does not cover flood or earthquake damage unless that protection is added separately; whether separate coverage is required depends on the loan and property (CFPB, “What is homeowner’s insurance? Why is homeowner’s insurance required?”). Do not assume a cheaper policy will qualify—ask the servicer to confirm that the proposed coverage meets the loan requirements.

Respond to force-placed insurance notices on time
Do not set aside a notice while trying to resolve a rejection. Under federal rules, a servicer generally needs a reasonable basis to believe required hazard insurance is missing and must follow applicable notice procedures before assessing a force-placed insurance charge. The process generally includes an initial written notice at least 45 days before assessment and a reminder notice; the exact requirements and deadlines depend on the circumstances. Read every notice promptly and check the current rule text if you need to understand how it applies (CFPB, 12 CFR § 1024.37).

Escalate a servicing error
If the servicer has received proof but fails to process it, continues an improper charge, or mishandles an escrow premium, send a written notice of error to the servicer’s designated address. Keep a copy and delivery evidence. The CFPB also accepts complaints about mortgage-servicing problems (CFPB, “Your mortgage servicer must comply with federal rules”; CFPB consumer guidance).
If the servicer’s failure to make a timely escrow payment caused your policy to be canceled, CFPB guidance suggests consulting an attorney. For a question about state insurance regulation, contact your state insurance department; state-specific rights and procedures vary.
