What to Do If Your Michigan Absentee Ballot Is Late, Damaged, or Rejected

If your Michigan absentee ballot is late, damaged, or rejected, check the state ballot tracker and contact your city or township clerk promptly. The right next step depends on whether the ballot was never received, needs replacement, or was rejected over a signature. For most voters, the clerk must receive a completed ballot by 8 p.m. on Election Day.

First, check the ballot’s status

  1. Use Michigan’s absentee ballot tracker to see when your ballot was sent and whether the clerk has recorded its receipt. You can also sign up for email notifications.

  2. If the tracker does not show receipt, or its status is unclear, call your local city or township clerk. The tracker may not update when you submit a ballot at an early voting site or on Election Day, so a missing update does not by itself establish that the ballot was not received.

  3. Tell the clerk what happened and ask what options remain for your specific ballot and election. Mention whether it was never delivered, physically damaged, completed incorrectly, returned, or rejected for a signature.

Michigan’s absentee-voting guidance says that, for most voters, a ballot must reach the local clerk’s office by 8 p.m. on Election Day to count. A postmark by Election Day is not enough under the ordinary rule.

If your ballot has not arrived, is lost, or was destroyed

Check that your voter registration and mailing address are current, then contact the clerk rather than waiting for the mail. Michigan says voters who never received, lost, or destroyed a ballot can ask to spoil it and request a new official ballot. The available method depends on how close it is to Election Day.

Michigan’s absentee-voting instructions describe different procedures as Election Day approaches. Your clerk can tell you which request method and deadline apply to your situation.

If your ballot is damaged or you made a mistake

Do not tape, alter, or submit a questionable ballot without asking the clerk what to do. Michigan’s voter guidance says that if you make a mistake while completing an absentee ballot, you must request a new ballot from your local clerk.

For physical damage, explain exactly what is affected: the ballot, secrecy sleeve, return envelope, or signature area. The statewide public guidance does not set out one repair procedure for every kind of damage. Ask the clerk whether the ballot should be spoiled and replaced, how to get the replacement, and whether you can still return it by the applicable deadline.

If the clerk says your ballot was rejected for a signature

A missing or non-matching signature on the return envelope can cause a ballot to be rejected. Michigan says a rejected ballot will not be counted until the signature issue is resolved. Follow the current instructions on the state’s signature cure guidance and form, and contact your clerk promptly.

These are different remedies with different deadlines. Ask the clerk which one applies to the notice you received and whether any additional current instructions apply. The election officials’ manual describes administrative procedures, but your clerk is the practical point of contact for voter-facing instructions.

If the ballot is too late to mail

For most Michigan voters, the clerk must receive the ballot by 8 p.m. on Election Day. The state lists authorized return options, including designated secure drop boxes, clerk offices, and in-person submission. Check the current instructions for your jurisdiction and election: drop-box locations are assigned locally, and you should not use another jurisdiction’s box or a generic mailing address.

If you are considering voting in person, ask the clerk how the ballot’s status affects your eligibility. Michigan says a voter whose absentee ballot has not already been returned may use early voting or the Election Day polling place under official procedures. If the ballot has already been inserted into an early-voting tabulator, it cannot be changed.

Deadlines depend on the problem and ballot status

Situation Deadline or rule
Most absentee ballots Received by the local clerk by 8 p.m. on Election Day.
Signature cure Cure form due by 5 p.m. on the Friday after Election Day.
Request to spoil a returned ballot because of a signature issue Written request must reach the clerk by 5 p.m. on the second Friday before Election Day.
Request to spoil an unreturned ballot Cutoffs vary by method and timing; confirm the exact deadline and delivery method with the clerk.
Military or overseas ballot Separate rule: postmarked on or before Election Day and received within six days after the election.

These deadlines are election-relative. Confirm the specific election date and current official instructions before converting a relative deadline into a calendar date.
