If a MagSafe charger or battery pack won’t attach to your iPhone, first check that the accessory supports your exact iPhone model. Then remove any wallet and case, inspect the accessory’s magnetic ring for debris, and try again. For a MagSafe Charger, connect it to power before placing it on the phone. These free checks can help isolate the problem before you consider buying a replacement.
1. Check that the accessory supports your iPhone
MagSafe compatibility depends on the iPhone and accessory. Apple says supported MagSafe chargers and battery packs snap onto supported iPhones or MagSafe cases. Identify your iPhone model and the product you have: a MagSafe Charger, the original MagSafe Battery Pack, or the newer iPhone Air MagSafe Battery. Similar product names do not mean the accessories have the same compatibility.

In particular, Apple says the iPhone Air MagSafe Battery attaches only to iPhone Air. The original MagSafe Battery Pack has a different, older compatibility list covering selected iPhone 12, 13, and 14 models. Check Apple’s current MagSafe compatibility and use guidance and the original MagSafe Battery Pack specifications for the product you own.
2. Remove anything between the phone and accessory
Take off the wallet
Remove an attached iPhone wallet before placing a MagSafe Charger or battery pack on the phone. Also remove any cards or other objects between the phone and accessory. Apple’s MagSafe instructions and wireless charging guidance both advise clearing the space between them.

Test without the case
If the iPhone has a thick, metal, or battery case, remove it and try attaching and charging again. Apple identifies these case types as potential wireless-charging obstacles, but that does not mean every case affects magnetic attachment in the same way. If removing your case resolves the problem, choose a MagSafe-compatible case made for your exact iPhone model. Apple’s guidance does not verify that every third-party case will work.
3. Inspect the accessory’s magnetic ring
Look over the magnetic surface on the charger or battery pack for lint or other debris, then gently brush away anything you find. Apple notes that its MagSafe Charger and MagSafe Battery Pack can attract debris during everyday use; an inspection can show whether that is a factor in your case. See Apple’s cleaning guidance.

4. Set up a MagSafe Charger and check for charging
Plug the MagSafe Charger into power before placing it on the iPhone. Set it face up on a flat surface, away from metal objects and other foreign material. Apple says connecting it first lets the charger verify conditions for maximum power; the actual charging power depends on the iPhone model, charger version, adapter, and conditions. Follow Apple’s charger setup and model guidance.

Check whether the iPhone shows the charging indicator. Magnetic attachment and charging are separate issues: a phone may stay attached even if it is not charging correctly. If it attaches but does not charge, focus on the power connection and charging setup rather than treating attachment itself as the fault.

5. Separate an accessory problem from an iPhone charging problem
Connect the iPhone to USB power as a comparison. Apple says an iPhone connected to USB power charges through that connection. If it charges by cable but the MagSafe accessory still fails after the checks above, the cited Apple guidance does not identify which component is at fault. Contact Apple or the accessory maker for help rather than assuming the charger or battery needs replacing.

Use what changed during troubleshooting to guide a purchase. If the accessory works with the case removed, a MagSafe-compatible case for your exact iPhone model is the most targeted replacement. If it still will not attach, confirm model compatibility and try the free checks before replacing the charger or battery pack; these symptoms alone do not establish that either product is defective. If shopping for a charger, check its version and compatible power adapter as well as the iPhone compatibility information.
