Feeling well does not tell you whether LDL cholesterol is raising your long-term risk: high cholesterol usually has no symptoms. Review the full lipid panel with a healthcare professional, put the result in context with your overall health and history, and discuss what prevention steps—including lifestyle changes or medication—make sense for you. This is general U.S. health information, not a personal diagnosis or treatment plan.
Why a high LDL result matters even when you feel well
High cholesterol usually has no symptoms. A lipid panel—not how you feel—is what detects cholesterol levels. The American Heart Association notes that regular checks matter because people may not feel symptoms of high LDL: AHA cholesterol guidance.

LDL is one part of a broader picture. A lipid panel also includes HDL, triglycerides, and total cholesterol. The result is worth discussing, but it does not by itself determine your personal risk or mean that every person needs the same treatment.

How the current U.S. guideline frames prevention
The 2026 ACC/AHA dyslipidemia guideline replaces the 2018 cholesterol guideline. For primary prevention assessment in adults aged 30–79, it calls for estimating risk with PREVENT-ASCVD, then personalizing the discussion rather than treating one cutoff as a universal rule. The ACC guideline summary says LDL-lowering therapy can be considered when 10-year PREVENT-ASCVD risk is 3% to under 5%, and should be considered at 5% to under 10%, after a clinician–patient discussion. These are decision categories, not an individual prescription or a promise of benefit.

- IMPORTANT CODE CHIP SETUP: To ensure the meter reads the correct code, always INSERT the code chip while the meter is turned OFF. Ensure the side with the code number (e.g., 602) is facing UP when inserting. Inserting the chip with the "CODE" text side facing up is incorrect and will cause an error code!
- Advanced Electrochemical Sensing Technology: This total cholesterol meter utilizes state-of-the-art electrochemical sensor technology to provide professional-grade accuracy for monitoring cholesterol levels at home. It is designed to quantitatively measure total cholesterol using fresh capillary or venous whole blood, offering a reliable aid for managing your cardiovascular health.
- Fast Results with Tiny Blood Sample: Get your total cholesterol readings in just 25 seconds. The system requires only a tiny 1μL blood sample, minimizing discomfort during testing. The pre-suction siphon design of the test strips ensures blood is applied easily and effectively every time.
- Comprehensive Data Tracking: Stay on top of your health trends with a large internal memory that stores up to 500 test results. The meter automatically calculates 7, 14, and 28-day averages, allowing you and your healthcare provider to easily monitor the effectiveness of your cholesterol control over time. Perfect for proactive lipid management, helping you track the key component of your lipid profile alongside a heart-healthy diet.
- User-Friendly Design & Large LCD: Features an easy-to-read, large LCD screen that guides you through the testing process with clear symbols and reminders. For added convenience, the device includes an automatic shut-off feature after 3 minutes of inactivity and a low-battery warning to ensure you are never caught off guard.
The same guideline brings back LDL-C and non-HDL-C goals that vary by risk. Depending on your situation, additional measures may help refine the discussion:
- Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a): the guideline highlights testing at least once in a lifetime.
- Apolipoprotein B, or apoB: selective measurement may add information in some cases.
- Coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring: a scan may be used selectively when it could help reclassify risk.
Ask whether any of these would change a decision in your case. People with a prior heart attack or stroke are not in the same situation as someone considering prevention for the first time; the guideline discussion needs to reflect that difference. See the 2026 ACC/AHA guideline for the full recommendations.

What you can do now
Make sustainable food and activity changes
The AHA recommends reducing saturated and trans fats, regular physical activity, and healthy weight management where appropriate. Avoid tobacco. Focus on changes you can maintain, and ask for help tailoring them to your health and routine. The AHA prevention and treatment guidance describes these lifestyle steps.
Discuss whether medication is appropriate
Lifestyle steps are important, but they are not always enough to manage risk. Statins are commonly used first-line LDL-lowering medicines; other options include ezetimibe, bempedoic acid, and PCSK9 monoclonal antibodies. The choice depends on risk and personal characteristics, so discuss benefits, possible side effects, and alternatives with a clinician rather than selecting a medicine from a list. The AHA’s 2026 guideline overview describes these treatment options. The AHA estimates that 1 in 4 U.S. adults has high LDL cholesterol (2026).

If you already take a cholesterol medicine
Take it as directed. Do not stop or change a prescribed medicine on your own; talk with your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist first. Report side effects and ask whether another treatment could be suitable. The CDC’s cholesterol treatment guidance advises patients not to stop medication without speaking with a healthcare professional.
Do not assume a supplement is a substitute for prescribed treatment. The AHA does not recommend supplements for cholesterol management; discuss any supplements you use because they can interact with medicines. See AHA guidance on cholesterol treatment.
When this general guidance may not fit
This article addresses a general adult question in the United States. Pregnancy, childhood, familial hypercholesterolemia, severe LDL elevations, statin intolerance, and advanced kidney or liver disease can require condition-specific advice. If one of these applies, seek guidance from a qualified clinician rather than relying on general prevention information.
