If your iPhone says there isn’t enough storage to install an iOS update, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Check Apple’s recommendations and the largest items using space, then offload an unused app or remove content you no longer need. Retry the update; if it still fails, delete the downloaded update if it appears in iPhone Storage and download it again.
Check what is using storage
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Wait for the storage breakdown and recommendations to load.
- Review the largest apps and content categories before removing anything. The screen helps you choose what is likely to make a meaningful difference on your device.
Apple’s update guidance says you need “enough available storage,” but it does not give a fixed number of gigabytes that works for every update. The amount needed can vary, so use your iPhone’s storage screen rather than relying on a universal target.

Choose what to remove
Start with items you can restore or are sure you no longer need. Offloading and deleting an app have different effects:

Try offloading unused apps first
In iPhone Storage, follow Apple’s recommendation to offload an app you do not currently use. You can also enable Offload Unused Apps in iPhone Storage if that option is available. Apple says iPhone can automatically remove unused apps while keeping their data when storage is low. The app may need to be downloaded again before you can use it.

Review downloads, files, photos, and messages
- Remove downloaded videos you have already watched and files you no longer need.
- Review large photo and video collections. If you want to keep an item, back it up before deleting it.
- Check large attachments in Messages and remove only those you no longer need.
Storage reclaimed depends on the items selected; Apple’s guidance does not quantify how much each action will free. Check iPhone Storage again after cleanup.
Retry the iOS update
Once you have freed space, go to Settings > General > Software Update and try again. Apple lists a compatible device, an internet connection, enough available storage, and power as requirements. Connect to Wi-Fi and keep the iPhone connected to power while updating. If the download is slow, avoid downloading other content at the same time.

If the update still will not install
Delete and download the update again
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Look for the iOS update in the list. If it is there, tap it and choose the option to delete the update.
- Return to Settings > General > Software Update and download the update again.
Use a computer if needed
If the update is not listed in iPhone Storage, or the same problem returns after downloading it again, Apple’s documented next step is to update using a Mac or iTunes. Apple also documents checking device storage with Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes. Keep the iPhone connected to power during troubleshooting and make sure the device is compatible with the update you are trying to install.

External storage does not expand the iPhone’s internal storage available for installing an iOS update. The documented options are to manage existing content, retry the download, or update through a computer.
