Check whether the device or browser is managed by work or school, compare another browser and network, then inspect the proxy settings for your platform. A proxy setting alone does not prove malware; it can be required by an organization, attached to a Wi-Fi profile, enabled by a VPN or security application, or controlled by a browser policy.
What routing through a proxy means
Microsoft describes a proxy server this way: “A proxy server in Windows routes your internet traffic through an intermediary instead of connecting directly from your device.” The intermediary may be operated by your employer, school, internet provider, hotel, public Wi-Fi operator, security software, or another service.

Proxy behavior is not controlled in one universal place. Depending on the platform, it can come from automatic detection, a proxy auto-configuration (PAC) script, a manually entered server, a Wi-Fi network profile, a VPN or security application, a browser extension, or an organization-management policy. A work or school network may require the proxy for access control, filtering, logging, or internal sites. On a personal device, an unexpected change deserves investigation, but the setting itself is not evidence of a specific infection.

- Check ownership and management. If the computer or phone belongs to an employer or school, or the browser says it is managed, ask the administrator whether the proxy is required. Do not remove a managed setting before you understand its purpose; the change can stop access to company or school resources.
- Measure the scope. Open the same site in another browser on the same device. If possible, connect the device to a different network, such as a phone hotspot. Record whether the symptom follows one browser, the device everywhere, or every device on one Wi-Fi network.
- Review network software. Note whether a VPN, firewall, parental-control tool, or third-party security application is active. These programs can alter connectivity. Temporarily turning off protection may create a security risk, so use the application’s documented diagnostic mode or consult its support instructions instead of leaving protection disabled.
- Inspect the applicable settings. On a personal device, compare the current proxy, PAC URL, and automatic-detection choices with changes you remember making. If a setting returns after you disable it, stop repeatedly changing it and identify the policy, app, extension, VPN, or network profile that is restoring it.
- Perform basic connection checks. Restart the device and, when appropriate, the router. Install pending operating-system and browser updates. On public Wi-Fi, open a normal web page and complete the network’s sign-in portal if one appears.
- Escalate an unexplained or managed case. Ask your organization’s administrator or network provider whether the proxy is expected. For a personal device that repeatedly changes configuration, use trusted platform security guidance or qualified technical support; the available platform documentation does not identify a particular threat from this symptom alone.
Use the symptom’s scope to narrow the cause

Check proxy settings on Windows 10 and Windows 11
Open Settings > Network & internet > Proxy. Review the three areas shown there:

- Automatically detect settings: Windows may discover a proxy on the current network.
- Use setup script: A PAC address can automatically select how different destinations are routed. If the address belongs to your employer or school, do not delete it without confirmation.
- Use a proxy server: Manual setup displays the server address and port. Compare these values with information supplied by your administrator or with changes you knowingly made.
Microsoft notes that an organization may require a proxy and that users who do not have the setup script or server details should contact the organization’s IT department. A VPN can have separate proxy choices, so also open the VPN application’s network settings rather than assuming the Windows page contains every relevant setting.
Check proxy settings on macOS
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Network, select the network service you are using, choose Details, and open Proxies. Check each enabled item:

- Auto proxy discovery: The Mac searches the network for proxy information.
- Automatic proxy configuration: A PAC URL supplies routing rules. Record the address before changing it, especially on a managed Mac.
- HTTP, HTTPS, and SOCKS proxies: These are separate proxy types and may have different servers or ports.
- Bypass lists: Some destinations can be excluded from proxy routing.
If the Mac came from an employer or school, verify the configuration with that organization before disabling a service or deleting a PAC URL. If only one Wi-Fi network shows the setting, compare another network before treating the Mac itself as the source.
Check a Chromebook or ChromeOS device
Google identifies “Resolving proxy” and ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED as messages that can occur when proxy use prevents a page or search from loading. Open the current network’s settings and select Proxy to inspect the available configuration.

A work or school Chromebook may prevent users from changing proxy settings. ChromeOS can also receive proxy behavior from enterprise policy or from an app or extension that has permission to modify proxy settings. Chrome’s enterprise documentation describes direct connection, automatic detection, and fixed-proxy modes. If the device or browser is managed, ask the administrator to inspect the policy rather than attempting to override it. On a personal Chromebook, review recently installed extensions and remove or disable only those you recognize and no longer need.
Check proxy settings on Android
On supported Pixel and Android versions, open Settings > Network & internet > Internet, select the connected Wi-Fi network, choose Edit > Advanced options, and inspect Proxy. The available labels and path vary by Android version and device manufacturer. If those choices do not appear, use the phone maker’s current help instructions rather than changing unrelated network settings.

Check the proxy while connected to the network that shows the problem. A proxy saved for one Wi-Fi network does not necessarily apply to cellular data or another Wi-Fi network. If the phone is managed by an employer or school, confirm the intended configuration before removing it.

A proxy that reappears after you turn it off usually means another component is applying it. Work through these possibilities in order:
- Organization policy: Management software can enforce a PAC URL or fixed proxy. The administrator must change the policy.
- Browser policy or extension: A managed browser or an extension with permission to modify proxy settings can restore the value. Check the browser’s management notice and extension list.
- VPN or security application: Some products route traffic through their own local or remote proxy. Check their documented connection settings and status.
- Wi-Fi profile or network: The setting may belong only to one saved network. Forgetting and reconnecting to the network can reveal whether the profile is involved, but do this only if you know the Wi-Fi password and have permission.
- Unknown personal-device change: Record the time, affected networks, proxy address, and recently installed software. Seek qualified technical help if the cause remains unclear instead of repeatedly deleting settings.
Separate proxy trouble from a network sign-in problem
Hotels, cafés, airports, and other public networks may require a browser-based sign-in before allowing normal internet access. Connect to the network, open a simple non-sensitive web page, and complete the portal. If the portal never appears, test another network; this comparison helps determine whether the issue is local to that Wi-Fi service.
Restarting the device and router, updating the operating system and browser, and trying another network are useful isolation steps for general connectivity problems. A different network that works normally points attention toward the original Wi-Fi, its administrator, or its saved profile. A failure that follows the device across networks points toward the operating system, browser, VPN, security software, or management profile.
When to contact IT, the network provider, or technical support
Contact an administrator before changing a proxy on a managed device. Provide the device platform and version, whether the browser is marked managed, the network name, the exact proxy address or PAC URL shown, the time the behavior began, and whether another browser or network changes the result. This information lets the administrator distinguish an intended policy from a broken network service.
For a personal device, contact the internet provider or Wi-Fi operator when several devices are affected on the same network. Contact qualified technical support when a proxy repeatedly returns without an identifiable policy, app, extension, VPN, or network profile. The official Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, Chrome, and Android guidance establishes how to inspect these configurations, but it does not establish a prevalence rate or identify a particular malware family from proxy routing alone.
