If your natural gas is shut off while a pipeline is being repaired, follow the serving utility’s instructions and contact it for an address-specific update. Do not turn the gas back on or relight appliances unless the utility and the appliance manufacturer say it is appropriate. If you suspect a leak, leave immediately and call the utility’s emergency line or 911 from a safe location.
What to do during a repair-related gas interruption
- Check the utility’s notice and contact the utility. Ask how long the repair is expected to take, whether there are instructions for your address, and whether the utility will arrange appliance relighting when service returns. There is no universal restoration timetable or contact number; use the contact details provided by your local utility.
- Leave valves and appliances alone. Do not attempt to reactivate service, operate pipeline or meter equipment, or relight appliances unless the utility and the appliance manufacturer’s instructions say it is appropriate.
- Wait for the utility’s restoration instructions. The utility will tell affected customers what to do and whether any appliance restart or relighting steps apply.
A temporary outage is not necessarily permanent discontinuance
A service interruption for repairs does not by itself mean the utility has permanently ended service. In a December 15, 1981 interpretation addressing a particular regulatory provision, PHMSA said: “A brief lapse in gas delivery, as during an outage, would not indicate an intent to ‘discontinue’ service within the meaning of §192.727(d).” That interpretation concerns its stated regulation and fact pattern; it is not a general guarantee of service rights.

How restoration works—and why customers should not do it themselves
Pipeline restoration involves work for the operator, not instructions for customers to manipulate gas equipment. In one operator procedure, staff check whether air has entered a shut-down pipeline and purge it if necessary, verify the supply and pressure, restore valves gradually, check distribution pressure, and contact affected customers to arrange reinstatement. The procedure says appliances may need to be restarted or relit under manufacturer procedures.
Large outages can take longer because restoration may require sequential, manual work, including securing individual meters, completing safety checks, and visiting properties to relight appliances. A U.S. Department of Energy report published in December 2025 describes this context for large-scale outages; it does not mean every repair interruption requires a utility visit or establish how long a particular repair will take. Ask your utility what applies at your address.

- What You Get: 1×PT520A Gas Leak Detector, 3×AAA Batteries, 1×Protective Case, and 1×User Manual. Allow 30 seconds of warm-up in clean air before starting detection
What to do if you suspect a gas leak
Possible warning signs include a distinctive rotten-egg odor, hissing or roaring near an appliance or gas line, blowing dirt, or continued bubbling in standing water near a line. Treat these signs as a possible leak, even if service was recently interrupted.
- Leave the area immediately. Do not investigate, try to locate or stop the leak, or operate gas equipment.
- Avoid sources of sparks in the area.
- Once safely away, call your utility’s emergency number or 911. Use your own utility’s contact information; a phone number published for another service area may not apply.
For businesses: plan for disruption
Businesses should identify essential systems that depend on natural gas and discuss disruption plans and backup options with their utility. The Department of Energy’s cited preparedness guidance is directed to business owners; it does not provide household-specific backup-heating instructions.
