Secure the email account attached to the game first, then use the game platform’s own recovery process from a trusted device. Once you regain access, replace reused passwords, enable multifactor authentication (MFA) or a passkey, review linked accounts and purchases, and ignore anyone offering recovery through an unsolicited message. The exact screens, verification evidence and response times vary by service, and no publisher guarantees that deleted items, characters or purchases can be restored.
Do these things first
- Use a trusted device and open the service directly. Type the platform’s address yourself or open its official app. Do not follow an unexpected recovery link in an email, chat or direct message. A convincing-looking page can be designed to capture your password or MFA code.
- Protect the email account connected to the game. If you can still sign in, change its password to one that is long and used nowhere else, then turn on MFA. If you cannot access the mailbox, recover that email account with its provider before attempting game-account recovery; control of the registered email is often central to proving ownership.
- Start the platform’s compromised-account route. Look for labels such as hacked, stolen, compromised, cannot sign in or account recovery. Complete the automated flow first. If it stops because the attacker changed your email or sign-in ID, use the platform’s official support form or assistant.
- Change any password that was reused. A password exposed on the gaming account may also unlock email, console, social or shopping accounts. Change those credentials from their official sites and secure every account linked to the game.
- Check money movement. Review the game platform, console store and payment-provider records for charges you do not recognize. Report unauthorized transactions to both the platform and the payment provider through their official channels. There is no single refund procedure that applies to every service.
Secure the email and linked accounts
Start with the account that can reset everything else. Set a unique email password, enable MFA, and inspect the mailbox for forwarding rules, unfamiliar recovery addresses and recent sign-ins if the provider exposes those controls. Remove changes you did not make. Do not send a password, recovery code or one-time code to a person who contacted you unexpectedly, even if that person claims to be support.

Next, protect linked console, social and identity accounts. A still-linked account may be an authorized way back into the game, but it is also another route an intruder could use. Change its password and enable MFA before using it for recovery. Keep recovery codes private and store them somewhere separate from the account they protect; anyone holding a code may be able to bypass your normal sign-in.
Use the exact recovery route for your service
Recovery systems are not interchangeable. The options below describe the routes published by several major services; use the current support site or app for your own platform and follow its prompts exactly.

PlayStation
Use the online account-recovery flow with your passkey or registered email. If the registered email is no longer available, or the account shows an unfamiliar sign-in ID, online ID or password change, move to the platform’s Online Assistant rather than repeatedly guessing credentials. Keep any emails showing the original account details; they can help you answer ownership questions.
Epic Games
First secure the email address associated with the account. Then reset the Epic password. If a console or social account remains linked, try that sign-in option from the official login page. When the attacker changed the email or neither route works, submit the account-recovery request. After access returns, set a new password and turn 2FA back on for Epic and for every linked account, because a linked account can provide a route into Epic.

Activision
Do not create a temporary account merely because you read that one exists; use one only when the official recovery flow instructs you to. That process can require a newly created temporary Activision account plus a console or platform account that was linked to the compromised account. The support page says a request may take up to two days. The temporary account will become inaccessible after recovery, and its progress or purchases cannot be moved, so do not make purchases there.

Steam
Choose Steam’s Stolen or Hijacked Account path. If you cannot complete self-recovery, continue to Steam Support’s ownership-verification process. Provide accurate account history and use only the official support pages. Gaming groups, server administrators and other players do not need your Steam password or account information to help you.

Nintendo
Use Nintendo’s dedicated recovery process. When the Nintendo Account is linked to Google or Apple and that linked sign-in has been compromised, update the linked provider account through that provider’s support as well. Recovering only one side can leave the other route exposed.
Prepare an ownership case when automation fails
Support may ask for information that connects you to the account. Gather it before submitting a request: the original email address, previous sign-in IDs, approximate account-creation period, console or platform accounts that were linked, usernames, receipts and transaction dates, and notices showing when the email or password changed. Send only what the official form requests. Never email a password, full payment-card number or MFA code.

Describe the sequence clearly: when you last had access, what changed, which recovery methods still work, and whether you see unauthorized purchases or deleted content. Use one support case rather than opening many duplicate cases; duplicate submissions can make the history harder to follow. Keep the case number and copies of the messages, but do not post them publicly.

After you get back in
- Replace the gaming password. Make it unique to that service. Do the same for the connected email account if you have not already done so.
- Enable the strongest sign-in option available. Use a passkey when offered; otherwise enable MFA or 2FA with an authenticator app or another supported method. Save recovery codes privately and separately.
- Review identity and access settings. Check the email address, sign-in ID, online ID, recovery methods, linked consoles and social accounts, active sessions and trusted devices. Remove anything unfamiliar where the platform provides a removal control.
- Audit transactions and account changes. Record unauthorized purchases, subscriptions, gifts, trades or profile changes and report them through official support. Contact the payment provider separately about unrecognized charges.
- Secure every linked account. A strong game password is not enough if a compromised console or social login can still sign in. Change those passwords and enable their MFA.
What may not be recoverable
Account access and game inventory are separate questions. A publisher may restore the login without restoring deleted characters, dismantled items, traded goods or other progress. Bungie, for example, says it does not manually restore deleted characters or replace in-game items that were lost or dismantled. Other games have different policies, so treat restoration as case-specific and do not pay anyone who promises a guaranteed rollback.
Recognize recovery scams
Attackers often target people immediately after a compromise. A message may claim to be a moderator, security agent, clan leader or server administrator and ask for your password, a one-time code, a recovery code or a fee. Do not comply. Steam warns against entering credentials on a site you suspect is unofficial and says gaming groups or server administrators do not need Steam account information. Epic says it asks for a password only on official Epic login pages.
- Navigate to support from a bookmark you created yourself, the official app or a site address you typed.
- Ignore unsolicited links, urgent threats and promises of instant restoration.
- Never share MFA prompts or approve a sign-in you did not initiate.
- Do not hire a “recovery service” or buy hardware as a prerequisite for support.
- If you entered credentials on a suspicious page, change the affected password immediately from a trusted device and repeat the email-security steps.
If the attacker changed the email or deleted your profile
Do not keep trying old passwords. Secure the original email account, collect evidence of the original account identifiers and open the platform’s compromised-account request. Mention the unfamiliar email, sign-in ID or online ID and include the time you noticed the change. If an originally linked console or social account still works, use it only through the platform’s official login page.
If content was deleted, list exactly what is missing and when it was last visible, but avoid promising yourself that it can be restored. The support team may be able to return access while the game’s policy prevents manual restoration of characters or items.

- The reset email never arrives: check the secured mailbox’s spam and filtering rules, confirm that you are using the original address, and use the official support route if the attacker changed it.
- A linked login says the account is not found: verify that you are signing into the same console or social account previously linked; do not link a new account at random, because it may create a separate profile.
- Support rejects the request: submit a complete, consistent ownership history through the official form. Avoid contradictory dates and do not open multiple speculative accounts.
- Unauthorized charges continue: contact the payment provider, remove unfamiliar payment methods where possible, and ask the platform to review the account’s purchase activity.
- You receive a second suspicious message: stop replying, preserve the message as evidence and return to support through a known official channel.
Prevent the next takeover
Use a password manager to generate a different password for the game, email and each linked account. Turn on MFA or a passkey everywhere it is offered, keep recovery codes offline or in a protected vault, and review linked accounts and active sessions periodically. Treat every unexpected sign-in alert as a reason to open the service directly rather than clicking the alert’s link. These habits reduce the number of routes an attacker can use, but they cannot guarantee recovery if a service’s verification or restoration policy does not cover the loss.
