Then use that unit’s operator and service manuals and contact the manufacturer or a qualified emergency-vehicle repair provider. Do not assume the visible drip is the entry point, that a generic automotive sealant is compatible, or that a bulletin for another chassis applies. Whether the apparatus can remain in service is a fleet-authority decision based on the actual effect on occupant protection, electrical equipment, visibility and stored gear.
1. Make the cab safe and limit further water exposure
Protect occupants first
If water is entering while the apparatus is occupied, move personnel away from the affected area when practical and watch for slippery floors, wet steps and water near controls. Do not create a new electrical hazard by handling wet connectors, switches or equipment with power applied. Follow the apparatus emergency and electrical-isolation instructions rather than improvising a shutdown procedure.

Protect electronics and equipment
Move portable equipment out of the wet area only if doing so is safe and does not interfere with emergency readiness. Keep water away from radios, displays, chargers, body-control modules, air-bag components and other electrical devices. Record what became wet, including the location and condition of batteries, wiring, insulation and stored gear. Drying a compartment does not prove that moisture has left a connector or roof cavity; a qualified technician should assess any component that may have been exposed.

The available manufacturer and standards material does not establish a universal threshold that allows or forbids operation with a leaking cab roof. Your department’s fleet authority must evaluate the specific risk and consult the apparatus manufacturer or a qualified service provider. A repair bulletin’s existence is not operational clearance.

2. Capture facts before anyone seals the roof
Record when the leak occurs
Write down whether water appears during steady rain, wind-driven rain, washing, roof runoff, temperature changes or only after the truck has been parked. Note whether the cab was level, nose-up or nose-down and how long it took for water to appear. These observations help a technician reproduce the condition without guessing.
Map the interior evidence
Photograph and label every drip, stain, damp headliner section, wet trim piece and water track. Measure the position from fixed references such as the windshield edge, door frame or cab centerline. Note whether water emerges from a seam, a fastener, a wiring opening, an overhead console or behind trim. Keep the original photographs and add the date, weather and apparatus mileage or hours.
Preserve the exterior evidence
Do not scrape away sealant, pry roof trim or apply a new bead before the ingress path is documented. A quick patch can hide the original failure and make a later diagnosis harder. If the truck must be washed, tell the operator about the suspected leak and avoid high-pressure spray at the roof until the manufacturer or repair provider gives instructions.
3. Identify the exact apparatus and find its manuals
Collect the identity details

- Manufacturer and chassis or cab model
- Model year
- Build date or production range
- Vehicle identification number and department unit number
- Body builder, if different from the chassis manufacturer
- Any prior roof, windshield, body or collision repairs
Build date matters because a service bulletin can apply to a production window rather than to every truck carrying a particular model name.
Use the unit-specific operator and service information
Pierce’s Fire Apparatus Service and Maintenance Guide directs owners to the operator and service or maintenance manuals for the individual apparatus. Those documents may specify inspection points, approved materials, trim-removal methods, torque requirements and warranty contacts. If the manual is missing, request the correct revision from the manufacturer or authorized service channel; do not substitute a generic automotive body-repair guide.
4. Trace the ingress path instead of chasing the drip
Why the wet spot can mislead you
Water can travel along a roof seam, extrusion, insulation layer, wiring channel or interior trim before it becomes visible. Spartan describes upper-roof-seam leakage on certain emergency-response cabs, while a separate Freightliner bulletin documents water migration from a roof seam before appearance elsewhere in the cab. Those examples show why there is no universal fire-apparatus leak map. The point nearest the occupant may be an exit point, not the breach.

From the ground, look for open seams, lifted trim, cracked sealant, impact damage, missing fasteners and stains that align with the documented interior path. Do not walk on a cab roof unless the apparatus manufacturer specifies that it is designed for that access and the department has a safe method. A technician may remove interior trim or perform a controlled water test, but the test should be planned for the cab and should isolate one area at a time. Stop if water reaches energized equipment.

Ask for a reproducible diagnosis
Before authorizing a major repair, ask the provider to state the suspected entry path, how it was confirmed and what areas must be opened to inspect it. A diagnosis that only points to the wettest interior location is incomplete.
5. Check whether a manufacturer bulletin matches your truck
Spartan Fire TSB26-150-001 example
Spartan Fire, LLC, issued TSB26-150-001 on January 27, 2026. The bulletin is reproduced at OEMDTC; verify the complete bulletin and eligibility with Spartan or the applicable service channel before work begins.
| Bulletin item | Scope stated in TSB26-150-001 |
|---|---|
| Condition | Leakage through cab roof seams into the interior |
| Model-year and cab groups | 2020–2026 Gladiator and Metro Star; 2022–2026 FC-94 and KME Panther; 2023–2025 KME Predator emergency-response chassis cabs |
| Build period | Cabs built between March 2021 and November 2025 |
| Correction described | Add adhesive at the interior cab roof extrusion and reseal the upper roof seams |
| Labor allocation | 10 hours for the specific repair described in the bulletin; this is not a general estimate for other apparatus |
A model name alone is not enough to claim coverage. Confirm the VIN or build date, the exact cab configuration and any superseding instructions. If the truck is outside the listed scope, do not adapt the procedure by analogy.
6. Select a provider who can diagnose and repair this apparatus
Compare service options on four practical criteria
| Criterion | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Authorization or qualification | Is the provider authorized by, or demonstrably experienced with, this apparatus make and cab? |
| Procedure match | Does its written method match the truck’s model, build date and applicable bulletin or manual? |
| Ingress diagnosis and verification | Will it identify the actual entry path, inspect affected cavities and verify the repair under controlled conditions? |
| Records and warranty | Will the invoice document materials, locations repaired, test results, photographs and any effect on the manufacturer’s warranty? |
The manufacturer or its authorized service department is the first contact because the repair depends on unit-specific information. A specialty emergency-vehicle body shop may be appropriate when the work involves cab seams or panels; one example of that type of capability is described by OCRV Center’s emergency-vehicle body-repair service page. Treat any provider as a candidate until it demonstrates that it can work to the apparatus maker’s instructions.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Get a written scope before disassembly
The estimate should identify the suspected leak path, trim or panels to be removed, approved adhesive or sealant, curing requirements, corrosion treatment if needed, water-test method, labor allocation and warranty terms. Ask whether the provider expects hidden damage in insulation, wiring or structural components and how that will be inspected.
7. Do not substitute a generic sealant or another vehicle’s bulletin
Sealants adhere differently to painted metal, aluminum, composites, glass and existing adhesive systems. Compatibility also depends on surface preparation, primer, cure time, temperature and whether the joint must remain flexible. Without the truck identity and manufacturer instructions, no generic product can be identified as appropriate.
A Freightliner bulletin for specified Freightliner vehicles mentions Sikaflex 295UV. That reference does not establish that the product, preparation method or cure schedule is suitable for a fire-truck cab. Read the bulletin at OEMDTC only as a vehicle-specific example, not as a shopping list. Do not apply a retail sealant over a suspected leak and assume the repair is complete.

8. Verify the repair before relying on the cab
Inspect the finished work
Have the provider show the repaired seams, extrusion and any replaced trim before the interior is closed. Confirm that adhesive or sealant has the required cure time and that drains, wiring routes, airbags, headliner retainers and door seals were returned correctly. Check that no sharp edge, loose trim or blocked drainage path was introduced.

Perform a documented leak check
The provider should use a controlled method appropriate to the apparatus and record the conditions, areas tested and result. Reinspect the original interior locations after the test and after the cab has remained exposed to normal weather. If moisture returns, stop treating symptoms and reopen the diagnosis rather than adding another surface bead.
Assess affected systems and gear
Any wet electrical component, connector, restraint component, visibility aid or stored protective equipment needs an assessment under the manufacturer’s instructions and department policy. Record what was inspected, dried, replaced or returned to service. A dry headliner alone is not evidence that concealed moisture damage has been eliminated.
9. Understand what standards can and cannot tell you
NFPA identifies the 2024 edition of NFPA 1900 as current on its standards-development page and describes its scope as including automotive fire apparatus. That standards page does not provide a roof-leak repair procedure, approved sealant list or universal return-to-service threshold. Use the standard as broader apparatus-safety context, while the manufacturer’s manual and an applicable bulletin govern the practical repair.
Jurisdictional guidance, department policy and the apparatus warranty may add inspection or documentation requirements. Keep those requirements with the unit’s maintenance record and resolve conflicts with the manufacturer or the authority responsible for fleet safety.
Common mistakes that prolong a cab-roof leak
- Sealing the visible drip: The entry point may be farther uphill or inside a roof extrusion.
- Using a model name as proof of coverage: Bulletins can be limited by model year, build date, VIN or cab configuration.
- Borrowing a procedure from another truck: A Freightliner instruction, for example, does not become a Spartan, Pierce or other apparatus procedure.
- Choosing a product before identifying the substrate: Adhesive and sealant compatibility cannot be established for an unspecified cab.
- Skipping documentation: Without photos, weather conditions and test results, a recurring leak is harder to diagnose and warranty responsibility is unclear.
- Assuming a repair bulletin authorizes continued operation: Service status remains a fleet-authority decision based on the truck’s actual condition.
What the maintenance record should contain
- Unit number, VIN, make, model, model year and build date
- Date, weather and operating conditions when water appeared
- Interior and exterior photographs with reference measurements
- Equipment or electrical systems exposed to moisture
- Manual sections, bulletins and eligibility checks used
- Provider identity and qualification for the apparatus
- Suspected ingress path and diagnostic method
- Materials, surface preparation, cure time and areas repaired
- Leak-test method, date and result
- Inspection of affected equipment and the fleet authority’s service-status decision
The safest response is disciplined and model-specific: contain the water, preserve evidence, identify the apparatus precisely, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and require documented verification before treating the cab as repaired.
