If your Ethereum recovery phrase (seed phrase) or private key may have been exposed, treat the wallet as permanently unsafe. On a device and browser profile you trust, create a completely new wallet with a new phrase, move any remaining assets to addresses from those new keys, and stop using every account derived from the exposed phrase. Do not try to “repair” the old wallet by reinstalling an app, changing a password, or importing the same phrase into a hardware wallet.
First, contain the situation
Do not enter your recovery phrase or private key into a website, wallet-support form, chat, screen-sharing session, or direct message. Ethereum.org states that “No legitimate service, support agent, or website will ever ask you for these.” Unsolicited accounts claiming to be support, investigators, or recovery specialists are common second-stage scams.

Stop clicking links sent by the person or site connected to the incident. If you still have access to the wallet, avoid signing new messages or transactions until you understand what happened. Disconnecting a wallet from a website can remove a front-end connection, but it does not invalidate an exposed key or an on-chain token approval.

The correct response depends on whether an attacker obtained signing credentials, gained a spending permission, or may have infected the device that handled your wallet. Review the wallet’s activity in a block explorer and compare each unfamiliar transfer with your own actions. Note the time, recipient address, token, amount, contract and dapp involved. This review can suggest the route of compromise, but it cannot prove that a device is clean or make an exposed key safe.

| Possible incident | What it means | Priority response |
|---|---|---|
| Recovery phrase or private key exposed | Anyone with the credential may control the corresponding accounts and sign transactions. | Generate a new phrase and new addresses, move remaining assets, and retire every account derived from the exposed phrase. |
| Malicious token approval | A smart contract may be allowed to move a specified token or amount from your address. | Inspect approvals and revoke ones you do not recognize or need. Migrate if keys may also be exposed or unauthorized transactions occurred. |
| Compromised device or fake wallet extension | Malware may have captured a phrase, private key, password or transaction data; the scope is uncertain. | Stop using the suspect environment, address the device and browser problem, then create fresh keys from a trusted environment. |
| Funds vanish whenever gas arrives | A sweeper bot may be monitoring the old address and automatically taking incoming funds. | Do not keep topping up the address or create more accounts under its phrase. Obtain case-specific help through official channels without revealing secrets. |
If your seed phrase or private key may be exposed
1. Use a genuinely trusted environment
Choose a device you believe is free of malware and a browser profile without suspicious extensions. If you suspect the computer or phone has been modified, deal with that problem first or use another trusted device. A new wallet created on an infected system can be compromised immediately.
Do not assume that deleting a browser extension, reinstalling a wallet app, or changing an email password removes the risk. If malware copied the old phrase, the attacker can continue using it from anywhere.
2. Generate a new wallet and phrase
Create a wallet that generates a new Secret Recovery Phrase. Confirm that the phrase is newly generated rather than imported from the old wallet. Write it down privately and store it offline in a location protected from theft, fire and unauthorized access. Never photograph it, put it in cloud notes, email it, or send it to a person who offers help.
A recovery phrase is a master credential. Ethereum.org describes it as “the master key to your wallet.” Every account derived from that phrase remains potentially controllable by whoever saw it. Creating another account inside the same wallet, or restoring the phrase into a different wallet application, does not create new security.
If the old wallet was created through a Google or Apple login and that login might also be compromised, do not connect the same login to the replacement wallet. Use a separate, secured sign-in method instead.

3. Move assets to fresh addresses
Send remaining ether, tokens and collectibles from the old accounts to addresses derived from the new phrase. Verify the destination address on the trusted device before approving each transaction. Keep enough ether in the old account for required network fees, but avoid leaving assets there longer than necessary.
After migration, stop using the old wallet and all accounts derived from its phrase. Do not use those accounts for deposits, staking, approvals, signatures or “test” transactions. An exposed phrase cannot be made safe by changing its label or password.

If ether disappears immediately after you fund an old address, a sweeper bot may be watching it. The bot can use the exposed key to send incoming funds before you can make another transaction. Repeatedly adding small gas payments usually feeds the attacker and can increase your loss.
- Do not keep sending top-ups to the monitored address.
- Do not create additional accounts under the same recovery phrase.
- Do not share the phrase with anyone promising to “race” the bot.
- Save transaction hashes and timestamps and seek case-specific assistance through an official wallet or exchange channel.
There is no general promise that an ordinary transfer can beat a sweeper. Any strategy involving transaction ordering, private relays or specialized tooling depends on the network and the exact state of the account; use qualified, official help and never disclose signing credentials.
If the problem is a malicious token approval
An approval is different from a stolen phrase. It is an on-chain permission that can let a contract move a specified token, sometimes for an amount described as unlimited. The contract may be able to spend that token without obtaining your private key, but it cannot automatically control unrelated assets merely because an approval exists.

Use an approval-checking route reached from official Ethereum or wallet guidance, such as Revoke.cash or Etherscan’s Token Approval Checker, and inspect the affected network. Revoke permissions you do not recognize or no longer need. Revoking is itself an on-chain transaction and requires a network fee; the amount varies with network conditions, so check the transaction cost in your wallet before confirming.
Revocation limits the permission involved. It does not return tokens already transferred, undo a completed transaction, or neutralize a phrase or private key that an attacker has copied. If you see unauthorized transactions signed by your account, or you are unsure whether credentials were exposed, follow the fresh-wallet migration procedure as well.
Secure accounts connected to the wallet
Change passwords for linked exchanges, email accounts and other services that could authorize withdrawals or expose wallet information. Turn on two-factor authentication for crypto-related accounts, preferably with an authenticator app or security key where available. Review active sessions, API keys and withdrawal addresses, and remove access you do not recognize.
Preserve evidence before deleting messages or resetting devices. Keep transaction hashes, recipient addresses, suspicious URLs, wallet-extension names, screenshots, dates and the wording of messages that led to the incident. Use that record when reporting to an exchange, wallet provider, platform, law-enforcement agency or other appropriate authority. Never include your recovery phrase or private key in a report.

A hardware wallet can keep the keys for a newly generated wallet offline while you approve transactions on a separate screen. Ethereum.org describes hardware wallets as an offline-storage option, and MetaMask identifies Ledger and Trezor as examples. Follow the manufacturer’s setup instructions and verify the device’s authenticity and firmware source.

A hardware wallet does not repair a compromised phrase. Importing the exposed phrase into new hardware leaves all derived accounts exposed. A device also cannot reverse a transfer, recover tokens already taken, or protect funds if you type the new phrase into a phishing site. Its benefit begins when it generates and protects fresh keys that have never been disclosed.
What not to do after a wallet compromise
- Do not paste a phrase or private key into a “wallet checker,” recovery form, support chat or troubleshooting script.
- Do not trust anyone who contacts you first and claims to be able to reverse a transaction.
- Do not pay a recovery fee before independently verifying an official service, and do not expect payment to restore assets.
- Do not assume that disconnecting a dapp, deleting an app or changing a password revokes an exposed key.
- Do not send a test deposit to the old address after migration.
- Do not reuse the old phrase for another chain, browser wallet or hardware device.
Can stolen Ethereum or tokens be recovered?
Ethereum.org’s guidance is direct: “No one can reverse blockchain transactions.” Once a transaction is confirmed, the network generally cannot cancel it. Recovery is possible only if the recipient voluntarily returns the assets or a centralized service is able to freeze funds before withdrawal, which is not guaranteed.
Anyone promising guaranteed recovery for a fee is likely attempting a second scam. Contact the exchange or platform involved through an address you find independently, provide transaction hashes and dates, and keep your credentials private. Be cautious with services that demand an upfront payment, remote access to your device or the original phrase.
A practical containment checklist
- Stop entering or sharing the old phrase and private key; ignore unsolicited support.
- Review unfamiliar transactions in a block explorer and record hashes, times, recipients and contracts.
- Stop using a suspect device or browser profile and address likely malware or fake extensions.
- Generate a fresh wallet and recovery phrase in a trusted environment.
- Write the new phrase offline and store it securely; never transmit it digitally.
- Move remaining assets to addresses from the new wallet.
- Retire every account derived from the exposed phrase and do not top up a draining address.
- Check and revoke unwanted token approvals when the incident is permission-based.
- Change linked-account passwords, enable two-factor authentication and review sessions and withdrawal settings.
- Preserve evidence and report through official channels without disclosing secrets.
When to seek specialized help
Use official wallet, exchange or network support when the transaction pattern is complex, a sweeper is active, a device may be infected, or a centralized platform is involved. Describe what happened using public addresses and transaction hashes. Support should never need your phrase or private key. If substantial funds, identity theft or malware are involved, consider a qualified incident-response professional or local law-enforcement reporting route, while maintaining the same rule: credentials remain private.
