Assume the wallet is compromised until you prove otherwise. If anyone may have seen your recovery phrase (seed phrase) or a private key, stop using that wallet, create a new wallet on a trusted device, and move any remaining assets to a new address as soon as you can verify every destination and network. A new app password or passcode does not protect funds from someone who already has the key material.
The response is different when only a token approval or decentralized-app connection is suspicious. An approval can often be revoked; an exposed phrase or key requires migration. Use the steps below to identify which situation you face and avoid the recovery scams that follow many wallet incidents.

Do these things first
- Stop wallet activity on the suspect device. If the phone or computer where you entered or stored the phrase may contain malware, disconnect it from the internet and do not use it to create, sign, or approve transactions. Kraken’s September 15, 2026 guidance recommends moving to a device you trust.
- Use a trusted device to create a completely new wallet. Install wallet software only from its official source. Generate a new recovery phrase; never reuse any phrase that might have been copied, photographed, backed up to an exposed account, or entered into a website.
- Write down and secure the new phrase offline. Do not put it in a chat, email, cloud note, browser form, support ticket, or “recovery” service. The Singapore Police Force’s November 29, 2024 advisory recommends keeping private keys or seed phrases in physical form in a secure location.
- Transfer assets from the old wallet promptly. Use the trusted wallet interface, check the destination address character by character, and confirm that the selected network matches the asset. Blockchain transfers are final, so send a small test amount only when that is practical for the chain and asset, then complete the migration without delaying unnecessarily.
- Revoke suspicious token approvals and disconnect unknown decentralized apps. Do this if you may have granted spending permission or connected to a malicious site. Revocation reduces an approval-based risk; it does not make an exposed private key safe.
- Protect linked accounts. Change passwords and enable two-factor authentication on exchanges and other crypto accounts. For an embedded wallet, secure the associated email, Google, Apple, or passkey account, end unfamiliar sessions, and change the account password where available.
Identify what was actually exposed
Recovery phrase or private key
A recovery phrase (also called a seed phrase or mnemonic) can recreate the wallet and its signing keys. A private key can authorize transactions for the address it controls. Treat either as a total loss of control, even if you do not yet see an unauthorized transfer. Examples include typing the phrase into a web page, sending it to a person claiming to be support, saving it in an unlocked cloud account, or storing it on a device someone else can access.
Changing a wallet app PIN, password, or biometric lock only protects the local application. It cannot stop someone who has copied the phrase or key from importing it into another wallet. Stop using the exposed material permanently.

Token approval or malicious dApp connection
A token approval is permission recorded on-chain for a contract to spend a particular token, sometimes without a useful limit. Scammers can persuade users to approve unlimited spending. If the phrase itself stayed secret and the concern is an approval, inspect recent transactions, revoke the permission through a trusted interface, and disconnect unfamiliar dApps where the wallet supports that control.
Disconnecting a dApp does not automatically cancel an approval, and revoking approvals does not protect a wallet whose signing key has leaked. Keep these remedies separate.
Device or account access
Someone who controls the phone, computer, email account, cloud backup, or passkey used by an embedded wallet may be able to reach the wallet without ever seeing a traditional seed phrase. Treat the device and the linked account as part of the incident, not as an afterthought.

Move funds to a fresh wallet safely
The sources provide a general migration principle rather than one universal sequence for every blockchain. Networks differ in fees, confirmation times, token contracts, and the way assets are recovered. The following procedure keeps the decisions that matter in view.
- Prepare the destination first. On the trusted device, create the new wallet and record its new phrase offline. Confirm that the wallet supports each asset and network you intend to move.
- Copy the destination address from the trusted wallet. Prefer the wallet’s own receive screen instead of manually typing an address. Check the first and last characters and verify the network label.
- Inspect the old wallet. List native coins and tokens, note any assets that require a network-specific transfer, and check whether an approval or pending transaction is visible. Do not sign new messages or approvals from the old wallet unless a qualified incident professional has given chain-specific advice.
- Send remaining assets. Pay attention to the network selected in both wallets. Keep enough of the relevant native coin for transaction fees, but do not leave funds behind merely to avoid a final fee if an attacker may be monitoring the address.
- Verify completion in a trusted wallet view or block explorer. Confirm the transaction hash, destination, asset, and network. Because transactions cannot be reversed, investigate an incorrect address or network immediately; do not assume the wallet provider can undo it.
- Retire the old wallet. Remove the exposed phrase from devices and notes where possible, label the old address as unsafe, and do not deposit new funds there.
If an attacker is actively draining the address, speed matters, but haste must not replace address verification. For large or technically unusual holdings, obtain independent, chain-specific professional help before signing anything; never give that helper your phrase or private key.
When the device may be compromised
Do not use a potentially infected computer or phone to generate the replacement wallet or approve the migration. Disconnect it from the internet, preserve evidence you may need for a report, and switch to a device you trust. Download wallet software from the developer’s official distribution channel and check that the application name and publisher are correct.

A clean device does not repair the old wallet. It only gives you a safer place to generate the replacement and sign the transfer. If the old device held an email password, cloud backup, or passkey, secure those accounts from the trusted device and terminate sessions you do not recognize.
Revoke approvals without confusing them with key theft
Approval revocation is appropriate when a contract was granted permission to spend tokens. Review the wallet’s connected-app list and transaction history, identify unfamiliar contracts, and revoke permissions using a trusted wallet or established network tool. Check the actual transaction result rather than assuming that pressing “disconnect” changed the on-chain allowance.
If a recovery phrase or private key was exposed, perform the migration even after revoking every approval. An attacker with the key can sign a new transaction later, so approval cleanup is an additional measure, not the primary fix.

Secure embedded wallets and related accounts
Some wallets are created inside an account secured by email, Google, Apple, or a passkey rather than by a phrase that the user imports manually. In that case:
- Change the linked account password from a trusted device.
- Turn on two-factor authentication where the account supports it.
- End all sessions you do not recognize.
- Review recovery email addresses, phone numbers, passkeys, and authorized applications.
- Move assets to a newly created wallet if the account or its credentials may have been accessed.
Ethereum.org also advises changing passwords for linked exchange accounts and enabling two-factor authentication on crypto-related accounts. Securing the account does not eliminate the need to migrate assets if a wallet key was already copied.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStore the new recovery phrase for the long term
Keep the new phrase offline and physically protected from theft, fire, water, and unauthorized household or workplace access. Make sure your backup is legible and that trusted heirs or recovery arrangements, if any, do not expose the phrase to an untrusted service.

Never enter the new phrase into a web form, chat, unsolicited “support” conversation, or recovery website. Genuine wallet support does not need your phrase or private key. A hardware wallet can provide offline private-key storage, which Ethereum.org describes as a security benefit, and the Singapore Police Force recommends secure wallets such as hardware wallets. MEW’s September 10, 2026 guidance discusses hardware wallets for larger holdings. Buying one does not undo exposure of the old phrase, and it cannot prevent you from approving a malicious transaction on the new wallet.
Choose the correct response path
| What you know | Primary action | Additional action |
|---|---|---|
| Phrase or private key may have been copied | Create a new wallet on a trusted device and transfer remaining assets promptly | Revoke approvals, secure linked accounts, and retire the old address |
| Only a token approval or unfamiliar contract is suspicious | Inspect transactions and revoke the specific permission | Disconnect unknown dApps and continue monitoring; migrate if key exposure is later discovered |
| The device used for wallet activity may contain malware | Disconnect it and use a trusted device for wallet creation and transfers | Secure email, cloud, exchange, and passkey accounts that were used on the device |
| An embedded wallet account may be accessed | Change the account password, enable two-factor authentication, and end unknown sessions | Move assets to a fresh wallet if credentials or signing access may have been exposed |
| No assets remain in the exposed wallet | Do not reuse the phrase or address | Secure linked accounts and retain transaction records for reporting |
What cannot be reversed
Ethereum.org states: “No one can reverse blockchain transactions.” A wallet provider generally cannot freeze a self-custodied seed-phrase wallet or retrieve assets sent to another address. Save transaction hashes, addresses, screenshots, messages, and timestamps for an exchange, wallet provider, law-enforcement agency, or chain-specific investigator, but do not expect a guaranteed recovery.
Be especially wary of anyone who promises to trace or recover your crypto for an upfront fee. Ethereum.org warns that this is almost certainly a second scam. Do not send that person your phrase, private key, remote-access code, or another payment.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →After the transfer: monitor and document
- Watch the old address for unauthorized transactions and the new wallet for unexpected approvals.
- Review exchange login history, withdrawal addresses, API keys, and active sessions.
- Keep a private incident log with dates, transaction hashes, addresses, device details, and the exact information that may have been exposed.
- Report phishing pages, impersonation accounts, and theft to the relevant platform and authorities. Reporting cannot reverse a confirmed transfer, but records may support an investigation.
The most important decision is whether the cryptographic key material itself may have escaped. If the answer is yes or even reasonably possible, migration to a new wallet is the remedy; a password change, dApp disconnect, or approval revocation alone is not.
