What to Do If Your Child Says Their Headphones Are Too Quiet

When a child says headphones are too quiet, do not raise the volume automatically. First find out whether the problem is one app, recording, device, or headphone fit; compare a familiar sound at a comfortable level; then check safe-listening controls. If your child also misses ordinary speech or sounds without headphones, arrange a hearing discussion with their clinician.

Start with a calm, specific check

Ask, “What sounds too quiet?” A child may mean one video, game, song, app, device, or headphone pair rather than every sound. Ask them to name the exact situation before changing any setting. This prevents a quiet recording or faulty app from being treated as a reason to increase overall volume.

Compare a familiar source

Play a familiar song, podcast, or other recording that normally has clear speech. Keep the volume at a low, comfortable setting and ask whether your child can understand it. If the familiar source sounds normal but one app or track is quiet, the issue may be that source rather than the child’s hearing or the headphones. There is no single troubleshooting menu path that works across every phone, tablet, computer, Bluetooth connection, app, and headphone combination, so avoid assuming one particular setting will fix it.

Check the fit before the slider

Look at how the ear cups or earbuds sit. A pair that is too large, too loose, or uncomfortable can leak sound, making music seem quieter and encouraging a child to turn it up. HealthyChildren guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) notes that a good fit can reduce sound leakage and the impulse to increase volume. Reposition the headphones, try the correct ear-tip size if the device uses tips, and make sure hair, hats, or glasses are not preventing a seal. Never force an earbud that hurts or feels stuck.

Consider the listening environment

Background noise changes how loud headphones seem. A child listening near traffic, a television, a fan, a school cafeteria, or other children may increase the volume simply to cover the environment. Move to a quieter place and repeat the familiar-source check. If the sound is clear there, keep the listening level lower rather than trying to overpower the noise.

Why raising the volume first can be risky

Hearing risk depends on both how loud sound is and how long a person is exposed to it. The AAP’s 2023 clinical guidance warns that some headphones can produce hazardous levels and that a manufacturer’s claim of an 85-decibel maximum is not always dependable. The United States does not have a mandatory standard that restricts the maximum output of consumer headphones, so a label alone cannot prove that a pair is safe.

Use a practical rule from AAP clinical guidance: a child should be able to hear when spoken to while listening and should take breaks from the device. If you need to shout to get your child’s attention, or your child cannot understand you at arm’s length, pause the audio and lower the level. Do not tell a child to ignore a safety limiter or work around a warning.

Loudness and duration work together

A short exposure at a moderate level is different from many hours at a high level. Build quiet periods into listening, especially during long trips, gaming sessions, or schoolwork. A timer, a natural break between episodes, or a pause each hour can make breaks routine without turning every listening session into an argument.

What the WHO-ITU child mode means

The World Health Organization and International Telecommunication Union’s 2019 safe-listening device standard describes a child listening mode of 75 dB for 40 hours per week, with parental volume control. This is a design standard for an exposure mode, not a guarantee that every product implements it and not a substitute for advice from your child’s clinician. A device that advertises a child mode still needs to be fitted correctly, used in a reasonable environment, and checked by a parent.

Apple Support gives an example of a headphone-exposure notification at 80 dB over 40 hours in the previous seven days on supported devices. That figure is an example of one device’s exposure system, not a universal pediatric limit. Exposure notifications and child modes can help you notice a pattern, but they do not make unlimited loud listening safe.

Use built-in safety controls when your device offers them

Open the current instructions for the exact phone, tablet, computer, or headphones your child uses. Labels and menu locations change with operating-system versions, and some controls are unavailable on older hardware or in particular regions.

Volume limits and exposure monitoring

Look for a volume-limit or “reduce loud audio” control that lets a parent set a maximum. WHO safe-listening recommendations also identify listening-exposure monitoring and volume limiting as useful features. If a control can be locked with a passcode or parental account, use that option so a child cannot simply raise the limit when a recording sounds quiet.

Headphone notifications

Supported Apple devices can provide headphone-exposure notifications and a Reduce Loud Audio option. Check the device’s current support page for the model and operating-system version, then review the setting after updates or when a different pair of headphones is connected. A notification is a prompt to pause or reduce exposure, not a diagnosis of injury.

Check every volume control

Some setups have separate controls for the device, an app, a video, a game, and the headphones themselves. If one control is low, the child may report quiet sound even though the overall safe limit is working. Raise only the quiet source to a comfortable level while keeping any parent-set maximum in place. If you cannot identify which control is responsible, use the device maker’s current troubleshooting instructions rather than guessing.

When a quiet-headphone complaint may need a hearing check

A complaint about one headphone pair, one app, or one noisy room does not diagnose hearing loss. The concern is broader when a child regularly misses speech, asks people to repeat themselves, responds inconsistently to ordinary sounds, turns up other audio, or seems to have difficulty following conversation in a quiet room. Also mention concerns about speech or language development, school listening, ear infections, ringing, pain, dizziness, or a sudden change in hearing.

The AAP’s environmental-health guidance states: “Parental concern about a child’s hearing, speech or language delay indicates a need for further evaluation.” Contact the child’s clinician and describe what you observed, when it happens, and whether it occurs without headphones. The clinician can decide whether a formal hearing evaluation or another assessment is appropriate. Do not use a phone app, a headphone label, or a home volume test as a diagnosis.

Seek prompt medical advice for sudden or painful changes

A sudden difference between ears, ear pain, drainage, severe ringing, dizziness, or a rapid change after a very loud event deserves prompt medical advice. Remove the headphones while you arrange care. This article cannot determine the cause or urgency of an individual child’s symptoms.

If the headphones are the problem

Replacement is an option only after you have checked the source, fit, environment, and device controls. Choose based on measurable and practical features rather than a “kid safe” badge. HealthyChildren cautions that some products marketed that way may exceed 75 dB; the label itself is not proof of a tested limit.

What to compare Questions to ask
Fit and comfort Are the ear cups or tips sized for the child? Do they seal gently without pain, pressure, or slipping?
Stated output limit Does the manufacturer state a sound limit in measurable terms, explain how it was measured, and provide credible technical information?
Parent control Can an adult set or lock a maximum volume or exposure mode, and does that control remain active after reconnecting?
Compatibility Does it work with the child’s actual phone, tablet, computer, game system, connector, or wireless standard?
Maintenance Can you keep the ear pads or tips clean, and can the child put the pair on correctly without help?

No particular retail model has been verified here. A child-size pair with a comfortable fit and a verifiable, parent-controlled limit may be useful, but it will not correct a hearing problem or make a noisy environment safe. Test any replacement at a low level with a familiar recording and keep the same break routine.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Turning up the volume before identifying the source: A quiet track or app does not justify raising every sound.
  • Trusting “85 dB” or “kid safe” without context: AAP notes that claimed caps may not hold in practice, and HealthyChildren warns that some child-marketed products may exceed 75 dB.
  • Using headphones to cover background noise: Move to a quieter place or reduce the competing sound.
  • Leaving listening uninterrupted for hours: Keep regular breaks even when the level seems moderate.
  • Assuming a device warning is a medical test: Exposure notifications describe device use, not a child’s hearing ability.
  • Blaming the child: Ask what they hear, check the fit, and treat the complaint as useful information.
  • Replacing equipment before checking hearing: If ordinary conversation is also being missed, speak with a clinician rather than cycling through products.

A routine that is easy to maintain

  1. Before listening, place the headphones correctly and choose a quiet location when possible.
  2. Start with a low, comfortable level and play a familiar recording.
  3. Ask your child a normal-voice question from nearby; they should be able to hear you.
  4. Keep the device’s volume limit or exposure monitoring enabled and review it after major software or hardware changes.
  5. Pause at regular intervals and stop immediately if there is pain, ringing, dizziness, or a sudden change in hearing.
  6. Record recurring problems: which source was quiet, which device and pair were used, the environment, and whether the issue also occurred without headphones.

This approach answers the immediate complaint without treating loudness as the only solution. It protects listening time, identifies equipment or environment problems, and gives a clinician useful information if a broader hearing concern appears.
