1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf your carry-on is too big at the airport, ask the operating airline what it can do with the bag before boarding closes. Depending on the airline, your fare and the flight, staff may refuse it, send it to the hold for a fee, or gate-check it at no charge. None of those outcomes is guaranteed. Before handing over a bag, remove spare batteries and lithium-battery-powered devices and keep them in the cabin.
First, check the allowance for your flight
The airline operating your flight sets the carry-on size, weight and item limits. Allowances can vary by airline, cabin class and aircraft, so a bag accepted on one flight may not be accepted on another. The FAA’s passenger baggage guidance says most airlines have a maximum carry-on size of 45 linear inches—the total of height, width and depth—but this is context, not a universal allowance. The FAA advises travelers to check their airline’s own limits.

- Check the operating carrier’s current baggage rules for each flight segment, including any fare or priority entitlement that affects your allowance.
- Measure the bag’s outside dimensions, including wheels and handles, and check any stated weight limit.
- If your itinerary includes a codeshare or connection, ask the airline operating each relevant flight which allowance applies.
Do not assume that turning the bag sideways or compressing it will make it acceptable: staff may use the airport’s baggage sizer and the airline’s stated limits.
What to do at the airport
If you are still at check-in or bag drop
If you are unsure the bag will fit, ask an airline agent before security whether it can travel as checked baggage, whether a fee applies, where to take it and whether there is still time for it to go on your flight. Ryanair specifically advises passengers who are unsure about their cabin bag to check it at bag drop before security. Its guidance is carrier-specific, but asking early gives you a chance to understand the available options before reaching the gate.

If you are already at the gate
Speak to airline staff promptly and follow their instructions. Ask whether the bag will be tagged, where you should hand it over, where you will collect it, and whether you must pay. A bag sent to the hold might be returned at a baggage carousel rather than at the aircraft door; the collection point depends on the airline and operation.
Policies differ. Ryanair says an oversized cabin bag may be refused at the gate or, where available, placed in the hold for a fee. American Airlines describes a no-charge gate-check option in its published guidance. Finnair says an over-limit bag may be sent to the hold for an extra fee. These are examples of individual carrier policies, not options every airline must offer.

If the airline asks you to check a bag at the gate or planeside, FAA guidance says to remove spare batteries and lithium-battery-powered devices and keep them with you in the cabin. Examples include power banks, vapes, cell phones and laptops. Keep medications, travel documents, valuables and other essentials you need accessible with you as well. Airline instructions and applicable dangerous-goods rules determine what may be checked.

How airline policies can differ
| Source | Published guidance | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| FAA | Describes 45 linear inches as the maximum carry-on size for most airlines and advises checking the airline’s own limits. It also says to remove spare batteries and lithium-powered devices before a gate or planeside check. | The size figure is general context, not a promise that your bag meets your airline’s rules. |
| Ryanair | Its terms list a small bag up to 40 × 30 × 20 cm and, for eligible passengers, a 10 kg cabin bag up to 55 × 40 × 20 cm. Its guidance says an oversized bag may be refused or placed in the hold for a fee where available. | These limits and outcomes apply to Ryanair and can change. Check the current terms for your flight. |
| American Airlines | Its baggage page says bags must fit the airport sizer and describes tagging and checking a bag at the gate for no charge. | Do not assume this option applies to every flight or situation; confirm with staff. |
| Finnair | Its guidance says bags may be measured at check-in or at the gate, and an over-limit bag may be sent to the hold for an extra fee. | This is Finnair’s policy example, not a general airline rule. |
| IATA | IATA says allowances vary by airline, cabin class and aircraft type, and cabin bags may be removed at the gate when stowage capacity is exceeded. | Even a bag within its size allowance may not stay in the cabin if space is unavailable. |
| Air Canada | Air Canada says oversized carry-on bags are not permitted and additional baggage may need to be checked at the airport for a fee. | Check the current policy for your itinerary and fare. |
What to confirm before handing over your bag
- Whether the bag will be checked, refused or gate-checked, and whether a fee applies.
- Where and when to hand it over, and where to collect it after landing.
- Whether it can still travel on your flight.
- That spare batteries and lithium-powered devices are out of the bag and remain with you in the cabin.
