If a carrier rejects your iPhone trade-in, do not accept a reduced credit or send another device until you know the exact failed requirement. Read the inspection notice, preserve proof of the phone’s condition and shipment, verify Activation Lock and ownership details, then request a written reinspection or supervisor review. Your next step depends on whether the problem is condition, identity, eligibility, timing, or a missing promotion rule.
Start with the inspection notice, not a phone call summary
Trade-in rejections are usually tied to one specific inspection or eligibility rule. The message may say the phone was damaged, a different model was received, the storage capacity did not match, Activation Lock remained enabled, the device was not paid off, shipment was late, or a promotion requirement was missing.

Save the notice exactly as written. Download the email or PDF, capture screenshots of the account page, and note the date, device identifier, revised value, and deadline to respond. If a representative only gives you a verbal explanation, ask for the same reason in writing. A precise reason lets you challenge a factual error instead of arguing generally that the phone was “in good condition.”
Preserve evidence before changing anything
Keep every item that can establish what you submitted and what the carrier received. Make a folder containing:

- The original trade-in quote, promotion terms, and submission confirmation.
- Photos of the front, back, sides, corners, camera glass, buttons, ports, and screen while the iPhone is powered on.
- A photo or screen capture showing the IMEI or serial number. Do not post that identifier publicly.
- The shipping receipt, tracking history, delivery date, and package weight if the carrier recorded one.
- All emails, chat transcripts, case numbers, and store receipts.
- The name or location of any store employee who accepted the device and the date of acceptance.
Photographs taken after the warehouse reports damage may not prove how the phone looked when shipped, but they still help identify whether the inspected device matches your submission. Keep the original files with their metadata, not only compressed screenshots.
Check the five failure points that cause most rejections
1. Activation Lock and anti-theft settings
Turn off Find My iPhone and every other anti-theft or activation-lock feature before trade-in. A locked phone can be worth less or nothing because the next owner cannot activate it. If the phone is already away from you or will not power on, sign in to the relevant iCloud account from another device or browser and remove the iPhone from your account. T-Mobile specifically says this may be required even when the phone does not power on.
Do not erase the device alone and assume the lock is gone. Confirm that the iPhone no longer appears as associated with your Apple Account and that the carrier’s confirmation shows the lock requirement as satisfied.
2. Ownership, payoff, and account identity
Confirm that you own the phone and that any previous installment balance or financing restriction has been cleared. A carrier can reject a device that is reported lost, tied to another customer, or still subject to an ownership claim. Match the IMEI in the trade-in submission with the IMEI on the phone’s settings screen, box, or purchase record.

Compare every identity field in the submission: make, model, storage, color, carrier variant, and IMEI. Verizon’s validation terms specifically cover these fields. A mismatch such as selecting 256GB when the phone is 128GB can change the value even if the exterior is flawless.
3. Physical and functional condition
Use the carrier’s written definitions, not an informal description such as “lightly used.” Common disqualifiers include a cracked display, damaged frame, missing buttons, broken camera glass, liquid damage, severe dents, or a phone that cannot complete required tests. Some programs distinguish between ordinary wear, repairable damage, and damage that eliminates promotional value.
A screen with damage may still receive partial value under one program while failing a high-value promotion under another. AT&T’s terms reserve the right to adjust or reject a quote after inspection. T-Mobile says screen damage may qualify for partial value but not promotional value. Record whether the phone powers on, charges, connects to Wi-Fi, recognizes touch input, takes photos, and has working cameras, microphones, speakers, and biometric sensors.

A correct device can still fail if it arrives outside the program window or if the line does not meet an existing-customer condition. Check the date the trade-in kit was delivered, the date the device was shipped, and the date the carrier marked it received. Preserve the carrier’s time zone and tracking timestamps.

Some promotions also require the traded phone to have been active on the account for a minimum period. A new line, recently upgraded line, or wrong billing line can invalidate a promotion even when the handset itself passes inspection.
5. Promotion-specific requirements
Read the promotion’s fine print separately from the ordinary trade-in quote. Promotional value may require a particular plan, an eligible new line, a qualifying purchase, a specific trade-in grade, or continued installment billing. The ordinary device value and the promotional credit are not always the same entitlement.
Request a written reinspection or supervisor review
Contact the carrier through a channel that creates a record. State that you dispute the inspection result and want the exact failed criterion identified. Attach the original quote, inspection notice, photographs, IMEI or serial-number proof, shipping evidence, and any store receipt.

- Which condition or eligibility field failed?
- What evidence does the inspection show, and does the received IMEI match my submission?
- Can the device be reinspected or reviewed by a supervisor?
- If the requirement is corrected, can the original promotional value be restored?
Request a case number and a written response. If you sent the correct phone on time, explain the facts in date order and identify the attached proof by filename. Avoid sending additional personal information unless the carrier needs it to verify the account.

A store acceptance is useful evidence, but it may not be the final decision. Many carrier programs allow a warehouse inspection after a store or app-based estimate, so ask whether the store assessment was preliminary and which inspection controls the credit.
Carrier rules that change your options

Decide whether to accept a lower value
A revised offer is not automatically a good deal or a bad one. First determine whether the lower value is accurate and whether accepting it waives your ability to recover the device. Compare the revised amount with the value of keeping or selling the phone elsewhere, including the time and risk of another inspection.
Apple expressly gives customers a way to reject a lower revised value and receive the old device back under its process. Verizon states that accepted trade-ins are final after the credit is accepted. Other carriers may have different return windows or may charge shipping. Obtain the return rule in writing before clicking “accept,” paying off an installment, or allowing the response deadline to expire.

When a trade-in credit is missing rather than rejected
Monthly promotional credits often do not appear on the first bill. AT&T says credits may take two or three billing cycles. Check the correct wireless line, the promotion name, the trade-in confirmation number, and each bill’s adjustment section.
Credits can stop when an installment balance is paid early or when the line is upgraded early, depending on the promotion. Compare the bill before and after the change, then ask billing support to trace the promotion using the trade-in confirmation. Do not treat a normal processing delay as a rejection until the stated credit window has passed.
Escalate if ordinary support does not fix the record
Send a concise written dispute through the executive or dispute channel identified in your customer agreement. Include the timeline, the exact failed criterion, the remedy you want, and a complete evidence list. Keep the submission and delivery confirmation.
Review the agreement’s arbitration requirements before filing in court. For an unresolved wireless billing or equipment dispute, you can file an informal complaint with the Federal Communications Commission. The FCC says it reviews complaints and, in many instances, serves the complaint on the provider, giving the provider an opportunity to respond. An FCC complaint does not replace the carrier’s deadlines, so continue preserving evidence and responding to the carrier while the complaint is pending.
Compare another trade-in channel on equal terms
If the carrier will not restore the offer, compare alternatives using the same assumptions. A headline promotional value is not directly comparable with a one-time credit until you normalize the conditions.

Prevent a rejection on your next trade-in
- Read the condition questions and promotion terms before accepting the quote.
- Photograph the powered-on phone, all sides, and the IMEI or serial number.
- Back up your data, sign out of Apple Account services, disable Find My iPhone, and erase the device only after confirming the lock is removed.
- Verify model, storage, color, carrier version, ownership, payoff status, and the destination line.
- Package the phone securely and retain the receipt, tracking number, delivery scan, and package weight.
- Calendar the shipment deadline and the expected credit window.
- Save every confirmation until the final credit appears and the return period has closed.
The practical goal is to turn a vague “rejected” message into a documented decision about one identifiable requirement. Once you know that requirement, you can correct the record, obtain a reinspection, reject the revised offer where permitted, or escalate with evidence instead of guesswork.
