If your car is missing and you reasonably believe it was stolen, report it promptly to local police, then contact your insurer and follow its claim instructions. If anyone is in immediate danger, call emergency services first. Have the car’s identifying details ready, protect any payment cards or other property that was inside, and notify your lender if the car is financed.
What to do first when your car is stolen
- Check safely whether it was moved or borrowed. If someone else owns or regularly uses the car, such as a parent, check with them if you can do so without delaying a report once theft is reasonably established.
- Call emergency services if anyone is in immediate danger. A taking involving force or intimidation is carjacking, which the FBI distinguishes from motor-vehicle theft as a property crime. FBI guidance on motor-vehicle theft says to call 911 if you are in immediate danger.
- Report the theft to local or state police promptly. Give them the make, model, color, license plate or registration number, and VIN if available. The VIN may appear on your insurance documents or in your insurer’s app. Tell police if the vehicle has a GPS or recovery system; do not try to pursue a live location yourself. Ask for the case, crime, or report number and save it for the insurer. See NICB’s stolen-vehicle reporting guidance and NHTSA’s vehicle-theft guidance.
- Contact your insurer promptly. Ask how it wants you to file the claim and what information to provide. NHTSA advises contacting the insurer within 24 hours; that is guidance, not a universal legal deadline or a substitute for your policy’s requirements. Insurers may initially record the vehicle as stolen while recovery remains possible.
- Notify the lender or lienholder if the car is financed. Ask how it handles claim communications and whether you need to take any steps about loan payments. Do not assume payments pause automatically; the lender has an interest in the vehicle.
Protect payment cards and other property left in the car
Payment cards
If credit, ATM, or debit cards were in the car, contact each issuer promptly using its official app or phone number. Report the cards missing and follow the issuer’s instructions to lock or replace them. Liability protections depend on card type and how quickly you report the loss, according to the FTC’s guidance on lost or stolen cards. A police report alone does not block transactions.

Keys, documents, phones, and account access
Tell police and your insurer what other items were in the vehicle and ask what steps they recommend. If a phone, identity document, garage remote, or key could expose access to another account or property, contact the relevant account or service provider and follow its instructions. The right response depends on what was taken; a car theft does not by itself establish that a particular account has been accessed or compromised.

What to ask your insurer about the claim
Coverage and claim handling depend on your policy. NICB identifies comprehensive coverage as the coverage category that generally addresses vehicle theft; liability and collision coverage serve different purposes. A policy without comprehensive coverage may not cover the stolen vehicle itself. Ask your insurer:

- How to submit the police report or case number and any other required claim documents.
- Whether your policy covers theft, and what deductible, limits, or exclusions apply.
- Whether rental-car or other temporary transportation benefits are included, and what conditions or limits apply.
- How a lender or lienholder participates in claim communications or any proceeds if the car is financed.
Do not assume a claim will be paid or that a particular benefit applies until the insurer confirms the policy terms. See NICB’s guidance on reporting a stolen vehicle.

This process is for UK readers. GOV.UK guidance says to contact the police and insurer straight away and keep the crime reference number. Police notify DVLA about the theft and recovery. If your insurer pays out, you must tell DVLA the vehicle has been sold to the insurer; if the vehicle has a personalised registration, you may need to reclaim those details first. These DVLA steps do not apply to US readers.
