What to Do if Your Bitcoin Address Has Exposed Its Public Key

If only your Bitcoin public key or a spent address is visible, do not assume your coins are stolen. A public key is not a private key, and the sources available for this guidance do not indicate that ordinary attackers can currently calculate a private key from a public key. The practical response is to stop reusing the affected address. If it still holds coins, move them to a fresh address generated by a wallet you trust when that fits your security plan.

First answer the question that determines urgency: Was only the public key visible, or did a private key, recovery phrase, or extended private key also leak? The first situation is mainly an address-reuse, privacy, and possible long-term exposure issue. The second is an active key-compromise emergency.

Identify exactly what was exposed

Bitcoin addresses, public keys, and private keys are related, but they are not interchangeable. An address is a payment destination encoded from locking-script data. A public key verifies signatures. A private key creates those signatures and authorizes spending.

What became visible What it normally allows an observer to do Correct response
An address or an individual public key Track on-chain activity and, depending on the output type, observe a key that could be relevant to future cryptographic attacks. It does not by itself authorize a spend. Retire the address, avoid reuse, and consider moving remaining funds to a fresh address.
An extended public key (xpub or equivalent) Derive and monitor public addresses in the permitted branch of an HD wallet; it is not ordinarily a spending key. Stop sharing it, review what wallet branch it exposes, and investigate whether any private material was also disclosed.
A private key, seed phrase, or extended private key Potentially spend funds controlled by that key. Treat the wallet as compromised and migrate funds to keys created from a new, securely backed-up wallet.
A parent extended public key plus a non-hardened descendant private key Under the BIP 32 derivation weakness, this combination can reveal the parent private key. Assume the affected branch may be compromised and follow a full key-migration procedure.

If you are not sure whether a string is an address, public key, xpub, xprv, or seed phrase, do not paste it into a website or send it to a stranger for identification. Use documentation for the wallet that created it, and treat anything that can sign or restore a wallet as secret.

Why an address does not always expose a public key

Most Bitcoin addresses commit to a hash or script rather than displaying a raw public key. The exact exposure behavior depends on the output type.

P2PKH and P2WPKH

Legacy pay-to-public-key-hash (P2PKH) addresses and native SegWit pay-to-witness-public-key-hash (P2WPKH) outputs commit to a hash of a public key. The public key is normally provided in the spending input, so it becomes visible when that output is first spent. An address that has never been spent from may therefore hide the key even though the address itself is public.

P2SH and P2WSH

Pay-to-script-hash (P2SH) and pay-to-witness-script-hash (P2WSH) outputs commit to a script hash. The redeem script or witness script is revealed when the output is spent. A script can contain one or more public keys, but the address alone does not tell an observer every key in that script.

Output types with different exposure

Some constructions expose key material as part of the output itself. Pay-to-public-key outputs place a public key directly in the locking script. Taproot (P2TR) outputs contain an output public key in the scriptPubKey from the time the output is created, although the internal key and the details of a hidden script path are not necessarily exposed in the same way. Do not apply the P2PKH rule to every address format.

The Bitcoin Developer Guide’s “Avoiding Key Reuse” guidance recommends building applications to avoid public-key reuse and, when possible, discouraging address reuse: “So, for both privacy and security, we encourage you to build your applications to avoid public key reuse and, when possible, to discourage users from reusing addresses.”

If only the public key was exposed

This is not the same as losing control of the funds. There is no indication in the cited guidance that an ordinary attacker can currently derive a private key from a normally generated public key. The present, established cost is that reused addresses and keys make payment relationships, balances, and wallet activity easier to connect. A separate, prospective concern is that a future cryptographically relevant quantum computer could target public keys that remain exposed for a long time.

  1. Stop receiving to the affected address. In your wallet, open the receive screen and generate a new address. Do not copy an old address from transaction history or reuse an address label merely because it is convenient.
  2. Confirm that the new address came from the wallet you intend to use. Verify it on the wallet display or, when using a signing device, on the device’s trusted screen. Check the first and last characters before approving a payment.
  3. Back up the wallet that generated the new address. A fresh address is useful only if you can later recover its private key. Keep the recovery phrase offline and never enter it into a web form, chat, support ticket, or unknown application.
  4. Decide whether the old output should be moved. If it has already been spent and holds no balance, retire it. If it still holds funds, moving them to a fresh address can reduce the time during which the old exposed key protects an unspent output, particularly where the new output type keeps its public key hidden until a later spend.
  5. Send the funds in a controlled transaction. Review the destination and fee, and consider a small test transaction when the amount or wallet setup makes that prudent. After broadcasting, wait for the wallet and your normal verification method to show the transaction you intended.
  6. Do not send the coins back to the old address. A transaction that returns change or future payments to the exposed destination defeats the purpose of retiring it. Let the wallet create a new change address where possible.
  7. Record the operational change. Update invoices, saved payment instructions, donation pages, scripts, and address books so another person or automated process does not accidentally reuse the retired address.

Moving coins does not erase the old public key, its transactions, or the fact that the old and new outputs were connected by a transfer. It limits continued use of the old key; it does not make historical blockchain data secret again.

If a private key, seed phrase, or xprv leaked

Use a different response when secret key material was exposed. Assume that anyone who saw a recovery phrase or private key may be able to spend from it, even if no theft has occurred yet.

  1. Stop using the compromised wallet for new deposits. Do not wait for an attacker to move the balance.
  2. Create a new wallet with newly generated keys. Use trusted wallet software or a signing device, install it from the maker’s official distribution channel, and generate a new recovery phrase. Do not “change” a leaked phrase by editing a word.
  3. Back up and verify the new wallet before funding it. Write the new phrase offline, verify that the wallet can restore or recognize it according to its documented procedure, and keep the backup separate from the device.
  4. Migrate funds promptly. Send or sweep every affected UTXO to addresses from the new wallet. If an attacker may be watching the old wallet, avoid leaving a balance there while you investigate.
  5. Check derivation paths and account branches. Hardware and HD wallets can use different standards, account indexes, change branches, and script types. A migration is incomplete if it covers only one visible address while other branches remain controlled by the leaked seed.
  6. Revoke access to the old secret. Remove the compromised seed from backups, password managers, screenshots, cloud notes, and test devices. Do not keep using it for “small” amounts.

Never give a seed phrase or private key to a helper, exchange support account, recovery service, or website. A wallet maker’s official recovery instructions can explain the mechanics without requiring you to disclose the secret.

The extended-key exception

An extended public key is generally suitable for watch-only monitoring and address derivation, but BIP 32 documents an important caveat. If someone has a parent extended public key and a private key for a non-hardened descendant, the combination can be used to recover the parent private key. Therefore, “only an xpub leaked” is not a complete assessment if any child private key, export, or signing backup was also exposed. The wallet’s derivation structure determines the scope, so map the affected account and branches before deciding that funds are safe.

What future quantum proposals mean for this decision

BIP 360 discusses long-exposure attacks in which an attacker stores exposed public keys and later attempts to derive private keys with a sufficiently capable quantum computer. The exposure can last while coins remain in an output whose public key is already known. BIP 361 describes a proposed post-quantum migration and sunset approach.

Both documents are proposals, not activated Bitcoin consensus rules. They do not establish that a quantum computer can presently steal ordinary Bitcoin, and they do not justify a claimed arrival date, affected-coin percentage, or emergency deadline. Their practical relevance is narrower: if you are already retiring an address whose public key is exposed, directing the remaining balance to a fresh output with a suitable key-hiding script can be a prudent long-term-risk reduction.

Privacy consequences you should expect

  • Reuse links activity. Payments to and from one address can reveal that transactions belong to the same recipient, making balances and counterparties easier to follow.
  • A move creates a visible link. Spending from the old output to a new address lets observers connect the two in that transaction. The move reduces future reuse but does not provide perfect historical privacy.
  • Public keys can be shared accidentally. Block explorers, invoices, screenshots, signed messages, wallet exports, and application logs can all disclose addresses or keys. Review where the affected value appeared.
  • Separate wallet roles when appropriate. The Bitcoin Developer Guide describes signing-only and networked wallet roles. Keeping signing material offline while a separate system watches the blockchain can reduce the chance that a public monitoring task exposes a private secret.

A practical decision checklist

  • Do you have only an address, or a raw public key, xpub, xprv, private key, or recovery phrase?
  • Which output type received the funds, and was it already spent?
  • Does the affected output still contain a balance?
  • Can your trusted wallet generate and display a new receive address?
  • Have you backed up the new wallet without exposing its phrase?
  • Did any non-hardened child private key accompany an extended public key?
  • Have you updated every invoice, script, address book, or saved payment instruction that might reuse the old destination?

If the answers show only public-key visibility, retire the address and make a deliberate decision about moving remaining funds. If any private material or the dangerous extended-key combination was exposed, treat the wallet as compromised and migrate to entirely new keys promptly.
