Ask the fraud team which account-specific controls it recommends, secure any exposed login or recovery details, and check transactions for unauthorized activity.
An exposure notice does not prove that anyone accessed your account or took money. The right response depends on whether the exposed data was an account number, card number, password, PIN, verification code, Social Security number or another identifier. The steps below are written for U.S. consumers; rules and remedies differ in other countries.

1. Read the breach notice before changing anything
Save the notice and determine which organization was breached, when the incident occurred, what categories of information were involved and whether the organization offers free monitoring, identity-recovery help or insurance. Do not assume that every customer had the same data exposed. A notice may distinguish between contact information, financial account numbers, payment-card data, online credentials and government identifiers.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends matching your response to the information involved. Its consumer video transcript puts the first step plainly: “First, take a deep breath. Then, visit identitytheft.gov/databreach.” The FTC’s breach guidance is available at consumer.ftc.gov/media/79862.

Use the exposed data to set priorities
| Information possibly exposed | Priority action | What to ask the bank or provider |
|---|---|---|
| Bank account or routing number | Contact the bank through a trusted channel and review account activity closely. | Whether it recommends changing account details, adding controls, or taking another account-specific measure. |
| Debit or credit card number, expiration date or security code | Ask whether the card should be replaced and watch for unauthorized purchases. | Whether the card can be blocked or reissued without affecting legitimate payments. |
| Online-banking username or password | Change the password through the official banking site or app and protect the recovery email and phone. | Whether it can revoke active sessions, reset credentials or add stronger authentication. |
| PIN, one-time code or other access secret | Tell the bank immediately; never disclose a code to an unexpected caller. | Whether the PIN or authentication method must be replaced. |
| Social Security number or other identity data | Consider a credit freeze or fraud alert and monitor for identity theft. | Whether the bank has seen attempted account opening or other suspicious activity. |
These categories can overlap. If the notice is vague, ask the organization what data was associated with your record and ask your bank what protections fit that exposure.
2. Contact the bank through a trusted, independently verified route
Use the bank’s official mobile app or website, the telephone number on a recent statement, or the number printed on the back of your card. Ask for the fraud or security department and explain what the breach notice says. The bank may recommend a card replacement, new credentials, additional verification, an account change or another control, but no single action is required for every breach.
- Open the official app or type the bank’s known web address yourself; do not follow a link in an unexpected text or email.
- Call the number from a statement or card if you need a representative.
- Describe the exposed information, the date of the notice and any suspicious activity.
- Ask what the bank wants you to do and request a case or reference number.
- Write down the representative’s name, the time of the call and every action promised.
An unsolicited caller or message claiming that your money is at risk is not proof that it came from your bank. The FTC says to verify the story independently and keep verification codes private. Its January 2026 guidance is at consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2026/01/how-handle-unexpected-calls-claim-your-money-risk. Hang up, then contact the bank using a number you already trust. Never move money to a “safe” account at a caller’s direction.

3. Secure banking access and every recovery channel
If a password, username, PIN, debit-card detail or verification code may have been exposed, change it using the bank’s official channel. Do not reuse the new password on email, shopping or other financial accounts. If the same password was used elsewhere, change those accounts too.
Protect the accounts that can reset your bank login
- Change the password for the email account used for bank notifications or recovery.
- Review the email account’s forwarding rules, recovery address and phone number.
- Secure the mobile-phone account used for text-based authentication; ask the carrier about an account PIN or other takeover protection.
- Enable the bank’s available multifactor authentication and transaction alerts.
- Sign out of unfamiliar banking sessions or devices if the bank provides that option.
- Do not share one-time codes with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly. A legitimate representative should not need you to read a verification code aloud to “protect” your funds.
Changing an account number, closing an account or freezing a deposit account may be appropriate in some cases, but the bank should determine that based on the exposed information and any evidence of misuse. Do not close an account before identifying recurring deposits, bill payments and other legitimate transactions that need to be moved.
4. Check transactions and report anything unauthorized
Review recent transactions, pending items, electronic transfers, direct debits, ATM withdrawals and statements. Look for withdrawals or transfers you did not make, unfamiliar payees, changed contact information and small “test” charges. Continue checking after the initial review; fraud can appear later than the breach notice.

For covered consumer electronic fund transfers, Regulation E liability depends on facts such as the type of transfer, whether an access device was involved and when you notify the institution. Under current Regulation E §1005.6(b)(3), a consumer generally must report an unauthorized transfer shown on a periodic statement within 60 days after the institution sent that statement to avoid liability for certain subsequent transfers. That is not a universal 60-day grace period and is not a reason to wait. Read the current rule at consumerfinance.gov/rules-policy/regulations/1005/6/ and report suspected fraud as soon as you notice it.

5. Choose the right credit-file protection
A credit freeze and a fraud alert address applications for new credit, not ordinary activity in an existing deposit account. If someone has your Social Security number or other identity information, either may be useful in addition to bank monitoring.
| Protection | What it does | How long it lasts | How to place it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit freeze | Restricts potential creditors from accessing your credit report, making it harder to open new credit in your name. | Until you lift or remove it. | Place it with each of the three nationwide credit bureaus. |
| Initial fraud alert | Asks businesses to verify your identity before opening new credit. | One year. | Contact one nationwide bureau; it must notify the other two. |
Both options are free. A freeze does not stop withdrawals, transfers or charges on an existing bank account, so keep reviewing statements even after placing one. The FTC explains freezes at consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2025/09/get-credit-freeze-stop-identity-thieves and compares freezes with alerts at consumer.ftc.gov/articles/credit-freezes-and-fraud-alerts.

When an alert or freeze is not the main answer
If only a card number was exposed, the bank’s card-replacement and transaction-monitoring process may be more directly relevant than a credit-file measure. If bank-login credentials were exposed, changing those credentials and securing recovery channels takes priority. If identity data has already been used to open accounts, combine credit protections with identity-theft reporting and the affected institutions’ dispute procedures.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Report identity theft if misuse has occurred
Exposure alone is not the same as confirmed identity theft. Report the incident if someone has used your information to make unauthorized transactions, open an account, obtain services or impersonate you. File a report and receive a recovery plan at IdentityTheft.gov. The FTC’s identity-theft overview is at consumer.ftc.gov/articles/what-know-about-identity-theft.
The recovery plan can help organize steps such as contacting creditors, disputing fraudulent accounts, replacing identification and creating an identity-theft report. Also notify the affected bank or other financial institution. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau advises closing affected accounts when identity theft is occurring; ask the institution how to preserve legitimate deposits, payments and records while doing so. Its guidance, last reviewed July 30, 2026, is at consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/what-do-i-do-if-i-am-a-victim-of-identity-theft-en-31/.

7. Evaluate breach-offered monitoring without assuming it is required
An organization named in a breach notice may offer free credit monitoring, identity monitoring, recovery assistance or identity-theft insurance. Consider accepting an offer when it is genuinely free, but read the terms before enrolling.
- Confirm whether coverage is free or converts to a paid subscription.
- Check the enrollment deadline and the exact length of coverage.
- See whether it monitors credit files, bank activity, public records, passwords or only one category of data.
- Identify who provides recovery assistance and whether a dedicated specialist is included.
- Read insurance limits, exclusions, deductibles and documentation requirements.
- Check whether cancellation is required before a trial ends.
Monitoring can alert you to certain signals, but it does not replace bank contact, transaction review, a credit freeze or an FTC report. The FTC notes that identity-theft insurance generally does not reimburse money scammers stole. Its September 2024 explanation is at consumer.ftc.gov/articles/what-know-about-identity-theft. You do not need to buy a commercial product to complete the core response steps.
8. Avoid the follow-up scams that target breach victims
A publicized breach creates a believable reason for criminals to contact you. They may know your name, the breached company or part of an account number and use that information to sound convincing.
- Do not click a login link in an unexpected breach-related message; open the official app or type the known address yourself.
- Do not provide a password, PIN, full account number or one-time verification code to an inbound caller or texter.
- Do not install remote-access software because someone claims to be bank support.
- Do not transfer funds to protect them, pay a fee to release them or buy gift cards to resolve a supposed fraud case.
- Do not rely on caller ID; it can be falsified.
- Do not assume a caller is legitimate because they know personal details.
If you already gave a scammer information, tell the bank immediately, change the affected credentials from a trusted device and document exactly what you disclosed.
9. A practical timeline
During the first hour
- Save the breach notice and list the data categories it names.
- Contact the bank through its app, website, statement or card.
- Change exposed passwords and protect the email and phone accounts used for recovery.
- Check pending and recent transactions.
During the next day
- Report every suspected unauthorized transfer or withdrawal and obtain case numbers.
- Decide whether a credit freeze or one-year fraud alert fits the exposed identity data.
- Submit an IdentityTheft.gov report if misuse has occurred.
- Review any free monitoring offer for scope, duration and insurance exclusions.
For the following months
- Review each statement and account alert, including accounts that showed no initial fraud.
- Keep a dated incident file with notices, correspondence, forms and transaction records.
- Respond promptly to letters about unfamiliar accounts or credit inquiries.
- Lift a freeze temporarily only through the official bureau process when you legitimately apply for credit.
What the exposure does—and does not—mean
Someone possessing a bank account number does not automatically mean they can log in, withdraw funds or prove they are you. The risk depends on what other information was exposed and on the controls used by the bank and payment system. Conversely, a clean account today does not prove that no later misuse will occur. Treat the notice as a reason to verify, secure and monitor rather than as proof that money has already been stolen.
