Act quickly, but verify the warning before you respond. Open your bank or fintech app yourself, type the provider’s known web address, or call the number printed on your card or statement. Ask for the fraud or security department, find out exactly what data was exposed, secure the affected account, and review transactions. Do not use a link or phone number in an unexpected email, text, or call until you have independently confirmed it.
This guide applies to consumers in the United States. The right remedy depends on whether the exposed data was a card number, debit details, bank-account information, login credentials, a Social Security number, or information tied to a payment app. Credit-file protections can help with new-account identity theft, but they do not replace securing an existing bank or payment account.

What to do in the first 24 hours
- Verify the notice through a trusted channel. Sign in from an app you already use, enter the provider’s address manually, or call the number on your card or statement. Ask to be transferred to fraud or account security. Financial scammers often impersonate institutions after a breach.
- Ask what was exposed. Get a specific answer: card number, bank-account or routing details, password, PIN, security answers, Social Security number, or other identity information. Ask whether the provider found actual access or is notifying customers as a precaution.
- Have the provider secure the account. Depending on the exposure, that may mean locking online access, blocking a card, replacing a card or account number, resetting credentials, or changing a verification method. Turn on transaction alerts if the service offers them.
- Check recent activity. Review the current balance, pending transactions, statements, transfers, and small unfamiliar charges. Report anything unauthorized through the verified fraud channel and request a case number.
- Preserve evidence. Save the breach notice, relevant statements, messages, dates, names of representatives, dispute forms, and case numbers. Ask how to submit written follow-up and where to send it.
Do not wait for a fraudulent transaction before contacting the provider. A precautionary notice is a reason to confirm protections and monitoring, not proof that money has already been taken.

Only a credit-card number
Call the issuer if the notice says the card is compromised and ask whether it has blocked the number or issued a replacement. Continue checking transactions until the old number is no longer usable. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau guidance says a consumer is not responsible for unauthorized charges when only the credit-card account number was stolen. That statement concerns credit cards; do not apply it automatically to debit cards, bank transfers, or every fintech product.

Debit-card details or a bank-account number
Contact the bank promptly, enable alerts, and ask whether it recommends replacing the card, changing the account number, or adding other controls. Examine statements and electronic transfers rather than looking only for point-of-sale purchases. If an unauthorized debit appears, report it immediately. Under the circumstances described by the CFPB, certain unauthorized debit-card transactions must be reported within 60 days after the statement showing them is available. A different, shorter rule applies when the physical card is lost or stolen.
Username, password, PIN, or security answers
Change the exposed credential through the official service, not through a link in a message. Use a new password that is not used anywhere else. If you reused the same password with email, shopping, tax, payroll, or other financial services, change it there too. Ask the provider whether it will invalidate existing sessions, reset a PIN, replace security questions, or require stronger multifactor authentication. Never give a password or one-time code to an unsolicited caller or texter.
Social Security number or broader identity information
Consider a fraud alert or a security freeze and review your credit reports. These measures address applications for new credit, not activity inside an existing bank or payment account. Report confirmed identity theft to IdentityTheft.gov to receive an individualized recovery plan. A freeze is free under federal law, but you must place it separately with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

Payment-app data or a mobile device
If a payment app says financial data was exposed, notify the linked financial institution promptly and use the app’s available authentication and transaction-alert controls. If your phone itself was lost or stolen, notify the payment provider as well, change credentials from another trusted device, and revoke sessions that you do not recognize.
Questions to ask the bank or fintech
- Which exact fields were exposed: card number, bank-account or routing details, login credentials, Social Security number, or other identifying information?
- Was there evidence that someone accessed or used the data, or is this a precautionary notification?
- Have you locked online access, blocked the old card or number, or issued a replacement?
- Should I change a password, PIN, security answer, or authentication method? What if I reused the credential elsewhere?
- How do I enable transaction alerts, and how do I report suspicious activity outside business hours?
- What is my case number, and how should I submit a written dispute or follow-up?
- Are you offering credit monitoring or identity restoration? Which reports or data sources are covered, how long does the offer last, and what will it cost afterward?
The CFPB advises contacting the institution’s fraud or security department and closing affected accounts when appropriate. Federal Trade Commission guidance says the response should depend on the information compromised, rather than treating every breach alike.
Fraud alert or security freeze?
Choose the credit-file measure based on the identity data involved. Neither option stops a thief from using an already-open bank or payment account, so continue working with the provider.

| Protection | What it does | How to place it | Duration or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Initial fraud alert | Asks creditors to take reasonable steps to verify your identity before opening certain new credit or increasing a limit. | Contact one nationwide credit-reporting company; it must notify the other two. | Generally remains for one year. It does not block existing-account takeover. |
| Extended fraud alert | Provides stronger identity-verification requests after identity theft has been reported. | Follow the bureau’s process and provide the required identity-theft documentation. | Available when identity theft has been reported and lasts seven years under the CFPB description. |
| Security freeze | Restricts prospective creditors’ access to your credit file, making many new-credit applications harder to complete. | Place freezes separately with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. | Free under federal law. You must temporarily lift or remove a freeze when a legitimate creditor needs access. |
If the breach involved only a card number, contacting the issuer and monitoring that account may be the relevant first response. If a Social Security number or comparable identity information was exposed, add credit-file protections to the account-security steps.

Report immediately through the verified channel
Call the issuer or financial institution as soon as you see an unauthorized charge, debit, transfer, or withdrawal. Request blocking or replacement where appropriate. Ask what written dispute process applies and whether additional forms or documentation are required. A phone report creates a record, but written follow-up can make the timeline and disputed transactions clearer.
Understand the US timing rules described by the CFPB
For certain unauthorized debit transactions when the card itself was not lost or stolen, CFPB guidance describes a 60-day reporting window beginning when the statement containing the transaction is available. Waiting can increase potential liability for later transactions. When a physical card is lost or stolen, prompt reporting is important; the CFPB describes a two-business-day period after learning the card is missing for limiting liability under the stated rules. These are not universal deadlines for every fintech service, bank product, transfer type, or country. Ask the provider which rule applies to your account.

Keep a dispute timeline
- Record when you first noticed the transaction and when you contacted the institution.
- List each disputed transaction, amount, date, and account.
- Save statements, screenshots, emails, text messages, and call-reference numbers.
- Write down promised follow-up dates and escalate if the institution does not respond.
If the misuse includes identity theft, use IdentityTheft.gov for a recovery plan in addition to disputing the individual transactions with the provider.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Recognize breach-related follow-up scams
A genuine breach can make an impersonation attempt sound convincing. Treat an unexpected message that demands immediate action as unverified, even if it uses the institution’s logo or references a real incident.
- Do not click an unexpected account-security link. Open the app or type the known address yourself.
- Do not provide a password, one-time code, account number, Social Security number, or identity-verification answer to an unsolicited caller, email, or text.
- Do not install remote-access software because someone claims to be helping secure your account.
- Call the number on your card or statement, or use a contact path you located independently.
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency advises consumers not to provide personal information in response to unsolicited requests. The CFPB similarly warns about people pretending to represent financial institutions.

Evaluate monitoring and restoration offers
A provider may offer free credit monitoring or identity-restoration assistance after a breach. Compare the offer before enrolling rather than assuming that every service watches the same information.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What reports or data sources are monitored? | A service may watch one or more credit reports, public records, identity signals, or dark-web data; coverage varies. |
| How quickly are alerts sent? | An alert is useful only if you can act before additional misuse occurs. |
| Is identity restoration included? | Restoration support can differ from simple notifications and may have limits or exclusions. |
| How long is the free period? | Record the end date and whether enrollment converts to a paid subscription. |
| What happens after the offer ends? | Check the recurring price, cancellation method, and whether your data remains with the provider. |
Federal Trade Commission advice says to ask questions before signing up for paid credit monitoring. Free credit reports and self-monitoring remain alternatives. Monitoring can alert you to some signs of identity misuse, but it cannot prevent a fraudulent transaction or an attacker taking over an existing account.
Ongoing checks after the breach notice
Keep checking statements, account alerts, email-security notifications, and credit reports for as long as the provider recommends and whenever the exposed data remains valid. Update contact information with the institution so alerts reach you. Review linked external accounts and automatic-payment instructions for changes you did not authorize.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
When you finish a call, confirm what was changed: which card or account number was blocked, whether replacement credentials were issued, whether old sessions were revoked, and when the next statement will arrive. Keep your records until the dispute, replacement, and any credit-file issue are resolved.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Card number only: verify the notice, contact the issuer, replace or block the card if advised, and monitor transactions.
- Debit or bank-account details: contact the institution promptly, enable alerts, ask about a replacement number, and report unauthorized debits without delay.
- Credentials: reset them through the official service, stop password reuse, and strengthen authentication on other accounts that shared the credential.
- Social Security number or identity data: review credit reports, consider an alert or freeze, and use IdentityTheft.gov if identity theft occurred.
- Any suspicious message: stop responding and reconnect with the institution through independently verified contact details.
