First verify the new rate, annual percentage yield (APY), effective date and account terms. Then compare the account’s net value—including fees, balance requirements, withdrawal limits, access and deposit insurance—with other savings accounts, money market deposit accounts and certificates of deposit (CDs). If another account fits better, move only the amount you can spare after checking automatic payments, transfer timing and insurance coverage.
1. Confirm exactly what changed
A lower return can result from a genuine variable-rate change, an expired introductory offer, a balance tier, a relationship condition or a fee that now offsets the interest. Do not move money until you know which one applies.

Record the new APY and interest rate
Save the bank’s notice, rate page or secure-message explanation. Record both the interest rate and APY, because they are related but not identical: the APY reflects the effect of compounding over a year, while the stated rate is the underlying periodic rate. Note the date the new figures became effective, the balance tier that applies to you, and any introductory or relationship requirement.
Check whether the account is variable-rate
Review the account-opening disclosures and current agreement for language saying the rate and APY may change. Under Regulation DD, a variable-rate account is one whose rate may change after opening unless the institution has contracted to provide at least 30 calendar days’ advance written notice of rate decreases. The disclosures should explain that variability and how the institution determines the rate.

Understand the notice rule before disputing the change
Regulation DD generally exempts changes to the rate and corresponding APY on variable-rate accounts from the general advance change-in-terms notice requirement. That means a reduction is not automatically unlawful merely because you received less than 30 days’ notice. If your agreement promised advance notice, a fixed rate for a stated period, or another protection that appears inconsistent with the change, contact the bank and ask for a written explanation tied to the specific disclosure. Keep copies of statements, notices and messages. The facts of your contract—not a blanket assumption about notice—determine whether the bank followed its terms.
2. Compare the account’s real usefulness
Compare what you will actually earn and how you will use the money, rather than choosing the largest headline APY. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau guidance identifies APY, interest rate, minimum balance, opening disclosures and fee schedules as core comparison information. Add the practical issues that determine whether the account works for you: transaction limits, transfer speed, branch or ATM access, and whether the advertised yield applies to your balance.
| Choice | What to compare | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Another savings account | APY, balance tiers, minimums, monthly fees, transfer access and insurance; verify whether the rate is variable and whether conditions apply. | Rates and terms can change, and a higher APY may depend on a balance or relationship requirement. |
| Money market deposit account | APY, minimum balance, check, debit and transfer limits, fees and insurance. | It may offer a different access mix, but some transactions are limited and minimums may apply. |
| Certificate of deposit (CD) | APY, term and maturity date, early-withdrawal penalty, and any callable or variable-rate provision. | Your funds may be less accessible; a higher rate does not help if you need the money before maturity. |
| Keep the current account | The new APY, fee burden, convenience and linked payments compared with current alternatives. | You avoid switching work, but may accept a lower return than a suitable alternative. |
Calculate the effect on your balance
Estimate the annual difference using your typical balance, not the bank’s maximum advertised tier. For example, a 0.50 percentage-point reduction on a $10,000 balance represents about $50 less in simple annual interest before compounding and taxes. Your actual result depends on daily balances, compounding and the dates of the change. This estimate is for deciding whether a move is worth the effort; use each institution’s disclosed APY for a precise comparison.

Look beyond the APY
- Minimum balance: Determine whether you must keep a threshold to earn the advertised APY or avoid a monthly fee.
- Fees: Include maintenance, excess-transaction, wire, outgoing-transfer and account-closure fees where applicable.
- Access: Check online and mobile transfer functions, external-account linking, branch access, ATM availability and customer-service hours.
- Limits: Read daily transfer caps, withdrawal rules and any restrictions on checks, debit cards or bill-pay transfers.
- Rate conditions: Confirm whether the APY is promotional, tied to direct deposit or another relationship, or subject to a variable formula.
3. Know which alternatives you are considering
Another savings account
A second bank or credit union may offer a better variable APY or lower fees. Confirm the rate’s effective date and how often it can change. Ask whether the account has balance tiers: earning a top rate on only part of your balance can make the overall return lower than it appears. Verify transfer procedures before closing the old account, especially if you will use the new account for bills or emergency access.
Money market deposit account versus money market mutual fund
A bank or credit-union money market account is a deposit account. It may combine savings features with check-writing, debit-card or transfer access, while imposing minimum balances or transaction limits. A money market mutual fund is an investment product, not a savings or checking deposit account. Do not treat it as interchangeable with a deposit account or assume it carries FDIC or NCUA deposit insurance.
Certificate of deposit
A CD can fit money that you can leave untouched for a defined term. Compare the APY with the maturity date and the institution’s early-withdrawal penalty. Read callable provisions: a callable CD can be redeemed by the institution before your expected maturity. Also check for variable-rate features. A high advertised APY is useful only if the term matches when you will need the money and you can tolerate the access restrictions.

4. Verify deposit insurance and ownership coverage
Before opening or funding an account, confirm that the bank is covered by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) or that the credit union is covered by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). CFPB materials describe protection of up to $250,000 for the same owner or owners in an ownership category. The limit applies across accounts in that category at the institution, so several accounts do not automatically create several separate $250,000 limits.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReview how your accounts are titled—individual, joint, trust or another ownership category—and ask the institution how it aggregates them. If you are moving a large balance, obtain written confirmation of the coverage calculation. Insurance protects eligible deposits if an insured institution fails; it does not protect an investment loss in a money market mutual fund.
5. Decide whether to move all, some or none
You do not have to make an all-or-nothing decision. Keep the amount needed for near-term bills and emergencies in an account with dependable access. Move only the portion that benefits from a better net return after fees and restrictions. A split arrangement can preserve a convenient operating account while placing longer-term cash in a higher-yield savings account or a CD ladder with different maturity dates.

Use a simple decision test
- Write down the balance you expect to keep for the next year.
- Subtract any minimum balance needed to avoid fees and the cash you must retain for scheduled payments.
- Compare the remaining amount’s expected APY after fees in each candidate account.
- Ask how quickly you might need the money and whether each account’s limits or penalties fit that time horizon.
- Choose the option with the best combination of net return, access and insurance—not merely the highest advertised APY.
6. Transfer funds without disrupting payments
Institution-specific procedures differ, so follow both banks’ instructions and allow for settlement time.
- List every connection. Identify direct deposits, automatic bill payments, subscriptions, loan payments, payroll, tax transfers and external accounts linked to the old savings account.
- Check pending activity. Review recent statements and scheduled transactions. Leave enough cash to cover items that have been authorized but have not posted.
- Open and verify the receiving account. Confirm the exact legal name, account and routing numbers, ownership category, APY conditions and insurance status. Complete any trial-deposit or verification process before initiating a large transfer.
- Start with a test amount. A small transfer can reveal a wrong routing number, an external-link delay or a daily limit before you move the full balance.
- Update payment instructions deliberately. Change automatic debits and credits with each biller or employer rather than assuming the old link will follow the money. Keep the old account funded until all pending items have cleared.
- Move the chosen portion. Use the method with the right speed and cost—an internal transfer, ACH transfer, wire or official check—after comparing each institution’s limits and fees.
- Confirm completion. Check that the receiving balance arrived, the sending account posted the withdrawal and no fee or failed payment occurred. Save confirmations and the final statement.
- Close only when ready. If you close the old account, obtain written confirmation of closure and ask how any residual interest will be paid.
7. Problems that commonly derail a switch
The advertised APY is unavailable at your balance
Read the tier table and calculate the blended return on your actual balance. Ask whether the top tier applies to the entire balance or only the dollars within that tier.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A promotional rate expires
Record the expiration date when you open the account. Recheck the ongoing APY and fees before the promotion ends; otherwise an account that looked attractive can become less competitive without a new notice that feels like a separate event.
Best Value
A transfer is delayed or rejected
Check account and routing numbers, name matching, verification deposits, daily caps and cut-off times. Contact both institutions before retrying repeatedly, because duplicate instructions can create overdrafts or returned transfers.
An automatic payment fails
Keep the old account funded through the full clearing cycle. Ask the biller to confirm the new payment details and monitor for returned-payment fees or late charges.
A CD no longer fits your plans
Do not break the CD without calculating the early-withdrawal penalty and comparing it with the benefit of the alternative account. For future needs, consider staggering maturities so all funds are not locked at once.

8. When to ask for help
Contact the bank’s customer-service or deposit-operations team if the posted APY differs from your agreement, a promised fixed period was shortened, a fee was unexpected, or a transfer has not completed within the stated time. Request a written explanation and keep your account disclosures. If the response does not resolve a possible disclosure or account-servicing issue, you can review the institution’s complaint process and seek guidance from the appropriate federal or state regulator. This article is general U.S. consumer guidance; your contract, institution, ownership category and current terms control.
9. A practical review schedule
Rate changes are normal for variable accounts, so set a recurring review rather than waiting for a surprise. Check the APY, fees and balance requirements when you receive a rate notice, when a promotion ends, and whenever your cash needs change. CFPB Director Rohit Chopra wrote on March 17, 2022: “If you have savings, you should consider looking at banks and credit unions, especially ones that will value their relationship with you, that may be offering higher rates.” That is general guidance from that date, not a current rate comparison. Recheck each institution’s live disclosures before acting.
