What to do if your bank account is linked to money laundering

An unexplained deposit, transfer, or bank warning is urgent, but it does not by itself prove you knowingly committed a crime. Treat the situation as a possible fraud or account-compromise incident, stop following the other person’s instructions, and use the response sequence below.

Do these things first

Move quickly, but do not try to investigate or “fix” the transaction yourself. The safest sequence is to stop activity, notify the financial institution, preserve evidence, and report through the appropriate local channel.

  1. Stop moving the money. Do not withdraw, transfer, convert, or forward funds at another person’s direction. If suspected funds are still in the account, leave them where they are and ask the bank or payment provider what it wants you to do. The FBI and Europol both advise suspected money-mule participants to stop transferring money; the U.S. Department of Justice specifically says not to send money in hand back to the requester.
  2. End contact with the person directing the activity. Do not answer new messages, click links, install software, or follow additional “verification” instructions. The person may be a fraudster, an accomplice, or someone whose own account has been compromised. Save the conversation before blocking or muting the contact.
  3. Call the bank or payment provider through a trusted route. Use the phone number on your card, a mobile app you already use, or the institution’s website that you type yourself. Do not use a number, QR code, or link supplied by the suspicious contact. Tell the institution which transactions you did not initiate, what instructions you received, whether anyone had your card, login, PIN, or one-time code, and whether any money remains.
  4. Preserve records. Keep statements, transaction IDs, receipts, deposit slips, screenshots, emails, text messages, usernames, phone numbers, delivery addresses, and voicemails. Do not delete messages simply because they are embarrassing or appear to incriminate the recruiter. The FBI advises keeping receipts and communications for investigators.
  5. Report the suspected crime locally. The correct agency depends on your country. In the United States, the FBI identifies the Internet Crime Complaint Center at IC3.gov for money-mule scam reports; you can also contact local police. Elsewhere, use your national police or official cybercrime reporting route. Europol’s public guidance is to notify the bank or payment provider and report to national police.
  6. Get immediate help if you are threatened. If the recruiter threatens violence, publishes your personal information, or you believe you are in immediate danger, contact emergency services in your location. Do not meet the person to return cash or cards.

Reporting does not guarantee that an account will be unfrozen, that money will be recovered, or that you will avoid investigation. Those outcomes depend on the facts, the institution’s procedures, and the law where you live.

What “linked to money laundering” can mean

A money mule is a person whose bank or payment account receives, transfers, or withdraws money for someone else, often funds generated by fraud or another crime. A recruiter may promise easy work, ask you to receive a payment and keep a commission, or tell you to send the balance to a different account. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau describes this pattern in plain-language consumer guidance.

Common recruitment routes

  • Fake employment: A supposed employer sends money for equipment, payroll, or customer refunds and asks you to forward it.
  • Romance or friendship scams: An online contact claims to be unable to use a local account and asks you to receive funds temporarily.
  • Requests from someone you know: A friend, relative, or acquaintance asks to use your account, card, login, PIN, or one-time code.
  • Account takeover: Someone gains access without your permission and uses the account directly. In that case, the unexplained activity may be evidence of unauthorized access rather than an arrangement you accepted.

Bank Negara Malaysia warns that an account used by another person to collect or transfer stolen or laundered funds can create serious banking and legal problems. However, unexplained activity alone does not establish what you knew, intended, or agreed to do. The FBI distinguishes unwitting, witting, and complicit money mules; investigators must assess the circumstances rather than infer intent solely from an account’s involvement.

What to tell the bank

Give the institution a factual timeline. State when you noticed the activity, how the other person contacted you, what you were told, which transactions you recognize, and which you do not. Explain any access you shared, including a debit card, online-banking password, PIN, security answer, one-time code, or remote-access session. Tell the bank if your phone, email, identification documents, or device may also be compromised.

Ask the representative to record that you are reporting suspected fraud or unauthorized use. Request instructions for funds still in the account; do not decide independently to return or reroute them. Ask whether the bank recommends replacing a card, changing online-banking credentials, ending a compromised session, or opening a new account. The Department of Justice says an account change may be appropriate when account information was shared, but the institution should explain the safest process for your situation.

If money has already been sent or withdrawn

Tell the bank exactly what happened even if the transfer was authorized by you at the time. Explain whether you acted because of a job offer, relationship, threat, or false instruction. Ask what protective steps are still available and follow the institution’s evidence-preservation instructions. Contact police or the official cybercrime reporting service promptly, because transaction records and communications may be important to an investigation.

Do not make another payment to “unlock” a refund, satisfy a tax, prove your identity, or prevent arrest. A person who has already deceived you may use urgency and alleged penalties to obtain more money or credentials.

Channel What it handles When to use it
Bank or payment provider Account access, transaction review, card or credential security, and instructions for funds still held Immediately after noticing suspicious activity or receiving an account warning

Qualified lawyer in your jurisdiction Advice about interviews, subpoenas, account restrictions, and possible personal exposure If investigators contact you, you are accused of wrongdoing, or restrictions seriously affect your finances

In Malaysia, Bank Negara Malaysia specifically advises contacting the bank and police if an ATM card is missing or a third party has gained account access. In Europe, Europol likewise tells people to contact their bank or payment provider and report to national police. These are location-specific examples, not a universal procedure for every country.

Possible bank and legal consequences

A financial institution may place an account under review, restrict transactions, close the account, or ask for information about particular payments. Bank Negara Malaysia warns that an account used by someone else to collect or transfer stolen or laundered funds may be closed and may make it difficult to open another account. The FBI also describes possible damage to credit and financial standing.

Criminal consequences are possible in some cases, but they are not automatic. Investigators and courts generally examine what the account holder knew, what instructions they followed, whether they benefited, and how they responded after discovering the activity. A person who was deceived or whose account was accessed without permission may have a materially different situation from someone who knowingly helped move criminal proceeds. Only a qualified lawyer who understands your jurisdiction can advise on your individual exposure.

If law enforcement asks you to give an interview, do not guess, destroy records, or coordinate a story with the recruiter. You can state that you want legal advice before answering detailed questions. Keep every notice from the bank or investigators and meet any stated deadline.

Recognizing pressure tactics

Money-mule recruiters commonly make the request sound temporary, harmless, or administrative. Warning signs include promises of unusually easy earnings, requests to use your personal account for business payments, instructions to keep a percentage, demands for your card or PIN, pressure to move funds immediately, and claims that you will be arrested unless you comply. A legitimate employer or acquaintance should not need control of your personal banking credentials or ask you to conceal the purpose of a transfer.

Do not let a recruiter’s confidence determine your response. A person can sound professional, provide a contract, or show a genuine social-media profile and still be directing criminal proceeds. Once you have reported the matter to the bank, preserve the evidence rather than continuing the conversation to obtain more information.

How widespread is money muling?

Government figures show why banks and investigators treat these patterns seriously, but they do not predict the outcome for any individual account holder. UK Home Office guidance published in 2024 cites a National Crime Agency assessment that money laundering may reach hundreds of billions of pounds per year in the United Kingdom; that wording describes a realistic possibility, not a precise measured total. The same guidance cites an estimate of more than £10 billion in illicit funds laundered through UK money-mule networks each year and reports that over 39,000 accounts in 2022 showed behaviour indicative of money muling.

In the United States, a Department of Justice account of the ten-week 2021 Money Mule Initiative campaign says agencies identified approximately 4,750 suspected money mules. That is a campaign-action figure, not a prevalence rate or a global total. None of these numbers establishes that a particular account holder will be investigated or prosecuted.

What investigators mean by an “unwitting” mule

The FBI has described people who participate without understanding the criminal source of funds, people who recognize warning signs but continue, and people who knowingly assist. That distinction matters because the same transaction pattern can arise from very different circumstances. An unexpected deposit followed by a prompt report is not equivalent, on its own, to an agreement to launder money.

At the same time, ignorance is not a reason to continue after the warning signs become clear. Once you suspect the account is being used for criminal proceeds, stop transfers, end contact, notify the institution, and preserve the evidence. Your response from that point forward can help establish what you knew and when you knew it.

Avoiding further account compromise

  • Change passwords from a device you trust, beginning with email and banking credentials, if you shared or exposed them.
  • Ask the bank whether cards, tokens, sessions, or one-time-code devices should be replaced or revoked.
  • Review recent payees, beneficiaries, linked devices, and contact details for changes you did not make.
  • Do not install remote-access software or allow a caller to “secure” your account while you are on the phone.
  • Keep copies of statements and reports in a secure location, but do not alter the original messages or files.

These security steps support the bank’s investigation; they do not replace reporting or authorize you to move suspected funds.

The FBI warning in context

In a 2019 FBI article about a Portland Field Office case, Special Agent Yaqub Prowell said: Mules are laundering money for people who have done some major damage. The quotation describes the harm caused by criminal networks and the case discussed in that article. It should not be read as a conclusion that every person whose account appears in a suspicious transaction knowingly participated.
