If your mail ballot is rejected or flagged, contact your state or local election office immediately and ask for the exact reason and the deadline and method for correcting it. If a poll worker challenges your eligibility or says you are not on the voter list, calmly explain that you believe you are registered and eligible, ask how to cast a provisional ballot, and keep the instructions for checking its status. Rules and deadlines depend on your state, locality, election, and ballot type; there is no single national cure deadline.
First, identify which problem you have
A poll-place eligibility challenge and a rejected mail ballot involve different procedures. A provisional ballot is not a way to correct a mail ballot, and a mail-ballot cure process does not resolve an in-person challenge.

Use the official website or phone number for your state or local election office. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) provides a state election office directory, including links to local office directories. Keep the notice and any tracking information. Do not send identity documents or personal information to a number or email address until you have verified it belongs to the election office.
If your eligibility is challenged at a polling place
Ask about a provisional ballot
For covered federal elections, federal law requires a provisional ballot when a person declares that they are registered in the jurisdiction and eligible to vote in the federal election, but their name is not on the polling-place list or an election official asserts they are ineligible. The statute says a qualifying voter “shall be permitted to cast a provisional ballot.” The voter must sign an affirmation, and the appropriate state or local official later reviews the ballot and affirmation under state law. If the voter is eligible under that law, the provisional ballot is counted under state law (52 U.S.C. § 21082).

Some states are exempt from HAVA’s provisional-voting requirement because they offer same-day registration or do not require voter registration. Procedures can also depend on the state and the election. Ask the poll worker what steps apply where you are voting; do not leave without understanding the available procedure.
Follow the instructions and check the result
A provisional ballot is not a guarantee that your vote will count. Follow any written instructions about providing information or documentation, and ask how to check the ballot’s status and when the result will be available. HAVA requires a free system, such as a website or toll-free number, for voters to learn whether their provisional ballot counted and, if it did not, why. The EAC also notes that voters may ask for a provisional ballot if they are not on the poll list, request another ballot if they make a mistake before casting one, or request language assistance; details depend on local rules (EAC voter FAQs).

If your mail ballot is rejected or flagged
Find out what the status means
“Rejected,” “challenged,” “pending,” and “not yet processed” may describe different stages. First ask the election office whether the ballot has actually been rejected or is still being reviewed. Possible problems include a missing required field, a missing signature, or a signature that does not match the one on file. The EAC says voters may be notified and allowed to correct an issue in some cases, but whether correction is available depends on local rules (EAC voter FAQs).

- What specific defect or eligibility question is recorded?
- Can this ballot still be corrected or supplemented?
- Which method is accepted: an online portal, phone, mail, email, or in-person submission?
- What is the final deadline, including the local time, and must the submission be received by then or only postmarked?
- What document, signature, or affirmation is required?
- How can you confirm that the office received your correction and determine the ballot’s final disposition?
Have the notice or ballot envelope, voter name and residence address, election name and date, and any tracking ID ready. Follow the envelope instructions and local return rules. The EAC directs voters to their state or territorial election website for ballot tracking and local requirements. Keep copies or photographs of notices and submissions where allowed, and note call dates, the names of people you speak with, and confirmation numbers. A submitted correction is not confirmation that the ballot was counted.
What the national cure figures do—and do not—show
The EAC’s 2024 Election Administration and Voting Survey (EAVS) Comprehensive Report, published in 2025, reported that 43 states allowed voters to cure mail ballots for the 2024 general election. Nationally, 1.5% of returned mail ballots entered the curing process, and 54.3% of those were successfully cured. These are survey results for that election, not a promise that a particular state, ballot, or later election offers a cure (EAC 2024 EAVS Comprehensive Report).

Keep a clear record and follow up
- Save the rejection or challenge notice, envelope, tracking information, and any written directions.
- Contact the official election office and record the specific reason for the problem.
- Write down the required next step, the exact deadline and time zone, and whether delivery or postmark controls.
- Submit only through an accepted channel, and keep proof of what you sent or completed.
- Check the official tracker, call the listed number, or follow the written instructions to confirm the final status. If the result is “pending,” “rejected,” or unavailable, ask the office what to do next and how to obtain the reason.
The EAC’s explanation of how officials prevent someone from voting twice describes safeguards used in election administration; if you are unsure what you may do after a ballot is flagged, ask your election office before attempting to vote another way.

Start with the state or local election office, which can explain the rule and status of your ballot. If you believe a federal voting-rights requirement is not being followed, the EAC provides voter resources and the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division publishes information about the Help America Vote Act (DOJ Help America Vote Act). For an urgent or disputed case, consider contacting a qualified voting-rights organization or attorney. No general guidance can determine an individual eligibility decision or legal remedy without the jurisdiction, election, ballot type, and facts of the case.
