Photograph the specimen, record exactly where and how you found it, and arrange an in-person examination by a local geology or mineral expert. A striking appearance—or an online comparison—cannot reliably establish what it is or what it is worth. Before you collect, move, or sell it, check the rules that apply to the land and location.
Document the specimen and its location
Before cleaning or altering it, photograph the whole specimen and close views of distinctive surfaces. Use indirect natural light, a plain background, and a ruler or other size reference. Note the date and exact location, what the surrounding material or exposure looked like, and whether the specimen was loose or embedded. That context can help with identification; the California Geological Survey asks people seeking help to include location information and clear photographs (Ask Rocky).

Avoid breaking, polishing, applying acid, or otherwise changing an unusual specimen before an expert has seen it. These steps could alter features that help identify it. A 10x jeweler’s loupe or geology hand lens may help you look closely, but it cannot confirm identity or value.
Get an in-person identification
Photographs can start a conversation, but they are not a dependable substitute for examining a specimen. The U.S. Geological Survey says: “Rocks and minerals must be examined in person from all perspectives for accurate identification; they are extremely difficult to identify through photographs” (USGS: Can you identify my rock or mineral?).

Look for someone local who can handle and examine it. Possible starting points include:
- A state or regional geological survey
- A natural science museum
- A college or university geology department
- A rock shop or members of a gem and mineral or rockhounding club
- A vendor at a gem and mineral show
Contact the organization first to check its current intake instructions. Some accept inquiries or photographs, while others restrict submissions or require an appointment. The California Geological Survey’s Ask Rocky inquiry portal, for example, provides a way to ask for identification guidance.

Keep identification separate from appraisal
Identifying a rock or mineral does not establish its market price. Value may depend on factors such as quality, size, condition, rarity, and provenance, and an appraiser may need a different kind of expertise from a geologist. The California Geological Survey says it does not estimate specimen values or provide appraisals. The South Australian Museum likewise does not value stones or jewellery and directs gemstone valuation questions to a jeweller (South Australian Museum: Geology collection).

Check local rules before collecting or selling
Rules depend on where the specimen was found, who owns or manages the land, and what kind of object it is. Before removing it or offering it for sale, establish the country and region, the land’s ownership or access status, and whether the find is in a protected area or archaeological context. The applicable permission or reporting requirement cannot be determined without those details.
Some rules cover particular historic finds rather than ordinary geological specimens. In England and Wales, GOV.UK’s treasure guidance says qualifying treasure must be reported to a local Finds Liaison Officer within 14 days; wreck material has a separate reporting process and deadline. Scotland and Northern Ireland have different rules. These requirements apply to defined treasure and wreck categories, not every rock or mineral, and should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.

If you suspect it is a meteorite
Treat a possible meteorite as unconfirmed until it has been examined by someone qualified to identify it. A photograph, magnet, apparent density, or surface shape is not conclusive. The USGS recommends in-person examination for potential meteorites as well (USGS identification guidance).

The South Australian Museum notes that features such as holes or voids, relative heaviness, and magnetism can be preliminary observations (South Australian Museum: Geology collection). Treat them only as screening clues, not proof; document the specimen and seek an in-person identification.
