Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf unfamiliar money has entered or left your bank account, contact your bank immediately through a phone number, app or website you have independently verified. Explain the transactions and any messages or people connected with them, and ask what protective steps to take. Do not move, withdraw, return or conceal the money unless the bank or law-enforcement agency gives you clear instructions.
Then report suspected fraud or crime through the appropriate UK route, preserve all records and consider filing an individual Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) with the National Crime Agency (NCA). These actions have different purposes: the bank secures your account, a crime report alerts police or the fraud-reporting service, and a SAR supplies intelligence about suspected money laundering or terrorist financing. Being used in this way does not by itself prove that you knowingly took part; official safeguarding guidance recognises that people can be exploited or coerced.

First, protect the account without touching the suspicious money
Use a contact route you already trust: the number printed on your card or statement, the bank’s official app, or a website address you normally use. Do not rely on a phone number, payment link or “support” message supplied by the person who sent the money. Tell the bank that you suspect your account has been used to receive, hold or transfer criminal funds.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Give the bank a factual summary:
- which payments you do not recognise, including dates, amounts and references;
- who asked you to receive, forward or withdraw money;
- what messages, emails, adverts or calls you received;
- whether you shared passwords, one-time codes, card details or online-banking access; and
- whether anyone is threatening, pressuring or controlling you.
Ask what immediate steps it recommends, such as changing access credentials, stopping a payment, replacing a card or securing online banking. Do not assume the bank will keep the account open. UK guidance says a bank may have a legal obligation to freeze a relevant account in some circumstances, including while it assesses a money-laundering concern.

Do not try to “fix” the balance yourself
Do not send the funds back to a different account, pass them to another person, withdraw cash, buy cryptocurrency or delete the transaction history. A well-intentioned transfer can make the trail harder to understand and could expose you to further loss. Ask the bank how it wants the money handled and keep its instructions in writing where possible.
Choose the right reporting route — they are not substitutes
You may need to take more than one action. A suspicious-activity report is not a crime report, and a crime report does not replace telling the bank. Use each route for its distinct purpose.
| Route | What it does | When to use it | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bank or building society | Protects the account, investigates transactions and decides whether to restrict access. | As soon as you notice unexplained activity or suspect someone has used your details. | The bank may freeze or limit the account. Official guidance gives no general release timetable. |
| Police | Records suspected crime and deals with immediate threats or safeguarding risks. | Call 999 if there is immediate danger; use 101 for a non-emergency crime in England, Wales and Scotland, subject to local arrangements. | Keep the incident or reference number and add it to your event log. |
| Report Fraud | Receives reports of fraud and cyber-enabled fraud for the UK reporting system. | When you believe you have been defrauded or your account was used as part of a fraud. | Check the current reporting channel and telephone details before calling, because routes can change. |
| NCA SAR Portal | Provides intelligence about suspected money laundering or terrorist financing. | When you know or suspect such activity and want to make an individual SAR. | The portal operates 24/7, issues an acknowledgement and reference number, and does not routinely update reporters about operational activity. |
The National Crime Agency expressly says that SARs are not crime reports and do not replace reporting the matter to police or another relevant organisation. Treat the SAR as an additional intelligence route, not as proof that you have reported a fraud.

How to report suspected fraud or another crime
Immediate danger, threats or coercion
Call 999 if you or another person faces immediate danger, is being held or threatened, or is at immediate risk of financial exploitation. If someone is controlling your phone, bank card or communications, say so clearly. Do not confront suspected criminals or arrange a meeting to recover money.
Non-emergency crime
For a non-emergency crime, contact police through 101 or the current local route. Explain that your account may have been used to move suspected criminal funds and provide the bank’s case number if you have one. In England and Wales, safeguarding arrangements may also involve the local authority where a child or adult at risk is involved. Procedures in Scotland and Northern Ireland can differ, so use the relevant local service.
Fraud reporting
Report suspected fraud through Report Fraud, using the current official website or telephone details. Home Office guidance lists 0300 123 2040 for Action Fraud, but verify the number and route when you make the report because contact arrangements can change. A report can be made even when the bank has already opened an investigation.

When and how to file an individual SAR with the NCA
An individual who knows or suspects money laundering or terrorist financing can submit a SAR through the NCA’s SAR Portal. You do not need to wait for the bank to tell you that it has filed one. Describe what you know, what you suspect and why, without overstating facts.

- Write a short chronology: how the contact began, what you were asked to do, what you did, and when you realised the activity might be criminal.
- State whether you were threatened, deceived, recruited for a job, offered a commission or otherwise pressured.
- Submit the report through the NCA SAR Portal and save the acknowledgement and reference number.
- Continue cooperating with the bank or police, and provide the SAR reference if they ask for it.
The portal is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The NCA says SAR reporters are not routinely updated about operational activity, so do not interpret silence as a decision about your account or your report. If you are unsure how the SAR regime applies to your circumstances, obtain independent legal advice rather than guessing.

A bank can restrict or freeze an account because it has legal and regulatory duties to prevent money laundering. The restriction can affect legitimate wages, bills and savings as well as disputed funds, particularly when investigators need to establish what happened. This can happen to someone who was manipulated or coerced and does not, by itself, establish deliberate participation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThere is no general official timetable for an individual bank investigation or for restoring access. Ask the bank:
Best Value
- what parts of the account are restricted;
- whether essential bills or benefits can be handled through another account;
- how to provide documents proving your identity, income or the origin of legitimate funds;
- which team or reference number should receive further evidence; and
- how it will contact you securely.
A bank may not tell you whether it has submitted its own SAR or disclose investigative information. Do not promise yourself or anyone else that the account will be unfrozen by a particular date.
If you may have been exploited or coerced
People can be recruited through fake employment, romance, debt pressure, threats or promises of easy money. A person who receives and transfers funds may be a victim of exploitation rather than a willing participant. Tell the bank, police and safeguarding professionals about the pressure and the exact instructions you received.
If a child or adult at risk is involved, contact police in an emergency and the appropriate local safeguarding service. In England and Wales, Home Office safeguarding guidance points professionals to local safeguarding arrangements; other UK nations use their own procedures. Preserve evidence and avoid placing yourself or the vulnerable person in further danger by confronting the people involved.
Get independent legal advice when your own exposure is a concern
Money-laundering law is fact-specific. If you knowingly accepted, moved or concealed criminal funds, or fear that investigators may misunderstand what happened, speak promptly to an independent solicitor with relevant criminal or financial-crime experience. Do not rely on advice from the person who asked you to move the money, from an online “recovery” service or from a lawyer connected to that person.
Legal advice can also help if the bank has frozen funds needed for rent, food, medication or dependants. Keep following lawful bank and police instructions while obtaining advice. Do not destroy records or coordinate stories with other people involved.
Common mistakes that can make the situation worse
- Waiting for certainty: you can contact the bank when you have a reasonable concern; you do not need to prove a crime first.
- Using an unverified contact: scammers may impersonate bank staff or investigators. Start from a card, statement, official app or familiar website.
- Moving the money: forwarding or withdrawing it can create additional transactions and losses.
- Confronting the sender: this can trigger threats, evidence destruction or further attempts to use your account.
- Deleting conversations: preserve the record, including messages that seem embarrassing or irrelevant.
- Filing only a SAR: a SAR does not report a fraud or emergency to police.
- Assuming a freeze proves guilt: a restriction is a protective or investigative measure, not a finding that you knowingly participated.
- Expecting routine updates from the NCA: SAR reporters are generally not told how intelligence is used.
A practical order of actions
- Stop further transactions. Do not follow new instructions from the suspected sender and do not spend or transfer unexplained funds.
- Contact the bank securely. Report the activity, ask for protective steps and obtain a case or call reference.
- Secure access. Change credentials as directed by the bank, review linked devices and report any stolen card or identity information.
- Preserve evidence. Save statements, messages and a dated chronology without altering the originals.
- Report the crime. Use 999 for immediate danger, police 101 for a non-emergency crime, and the current Report Fraud route for suspected fraud.
- Consider an NCA SAR. File one when you suspect money laundering or terrorist financing, remembering that it supplements rather than replaces a crime report.
- Arrange support. Contact safeguarding services where a child or adult at risk is involved and obtain independent legal advice if your own liability or access to essential funds is a concern.
Where this guidance applies
The reporting and safeguarding references here are UK-focused. The Home Office guidance cited for financial exploitation covers England and Wales, while Scotland and Northern Ireland have different organisations and local procedures. The underlying steps—contact the bank, preserve evidence, report suspected crime and seek specialist help—remain sensible, but verify the correct local telephone numbers and safeguarding route for your nation.
