If you tapped a suspicious banking link, stop interacting with it and contact your bank using its official app, website, or the number on your card or statement. A tap alone does not prove your phone or account is compromised, but anything you entered should be treated as exposed. What to do next depends on whether you shared information, downloaded anything, or noticed an unauthorized payment.
First: stop and contact your bank safely
- Stop interacting with the message and link. Do not enter more information, reply, call a number in the message, or follow instructions from an unsolicited caller who contacts you afterward.
- Reach the bank independently. Use the official banking app, type the bank’s known website address yourself, or call the number printed on your card or statement. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau advises that banks and credit unions never ask for account information through email or text message; see its answer about bank or credit-union verification requests.
- Explain what happened. Tell the bank that you tapped the link, what you entered (if anything), whether you shared a one-time code, and whether the page downloaded or installed anything. Ask what account protections it can apply. Available controls vary by institution.
- Check your recent activity. Report any transaction you did not authorize promptly and ask the bank what recovery steps are possible.
What to do based on what happened
If you tapped but entered nothing
Close the page and do not return to it. A tap alone is not proof that your credentials were stolen, money was taken, or malware was installed. If you saw a download, opened a file, or approved an installation, follow the device-security steps below.

If you entered your bank password or username
Change the password through the bank’s official app or independently reached website, and tell the bank. If you reused that password on other accounts, change it there too. Turn on the bank’s available two-factor authentication, and review account activity for anything you do not recognize.
If you shared a one-time code
Contact the bank immediately through a trusted channel and say that you gave out a one-time code. Do not share any additional codes with a caller or message claiming to be the bank, and do not move money to a supposedly “safe” account because someone tells you to.

If you entered card or account details
Tell the bank exactly which details you submitted and ask what protections it recommends for that account or card. Watch for unfamiliar activity and report it as soon as you see it.
If you sent money or see an unauthorized transaction
Contact the bank immediately. If you made a bank transfer or debit-card payment, ask whether it can be reversed or refunded; recovery is not guaranteed. For a fraudulent wire transfer or account takeover, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) also directs victims to report the incident at ic3.gov.

If the link downloaded or installed something
A suspicious link can raise a separate device-security concern if it led to a download or installation. The FTC recommends updating your security software and running a scan after a scam; it also advises using trusted manufacturer or technical support if you need help finding or removing malware. Do not install an app offered by the suspicious message or by an unsolicited caller. The FTC’s guidance is in What To Do if You Were Scammed.

Report the message or scam
- Suspicious text: Forward it to SPAM (7726). The FTC explains this option in How To Recognize and Avoid Phishing Scams.
- Phishing or scam: Report it to ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- Sensitive identity information exposed: Use IdentityTheft.gov for a response plan tailored to the information involved.
- Fraudulent wire transfer or account takeover: Contact your bank immediately; IC3 guidance also directs victims of fraudulent wires to ic3.gov.
These reporting channels are U.S.-specific. Elsewhere, contact your bank through its official fraud channel and use your country’s consumer-protection or cybercrime reporting service. Type government website addresses yourself or use a trusted bookmark rather than following links in the suspicious message.

Can someone steal your money just because you clicked?
A click by itself does not establish that your money or credentials were stolen. The risk and response depend on what followed: whether you entered credentials or a code, submitted payment details, approved a transaction, or installed software. Treat information you submitted as exposed, contact the bank when banking information or payments may be involved, and report unauthorized activity promptly. Official guidance does not establish a reliable probability that a tap alone will compromise an account or infect a phone.
