If you think someone has accessed your bank account, contact your bank’s fraud department immediately using its official app or website, or the number on your card or a recent statement. Ask how to secure the account, report any unauthorized activity, and stop further transfers. Don’t share a verification code or move money because an unexpected caller says it will protect your funds.
This guide covers U.S. checking and savings accounts, debit cards, and linked electronic payments. The steps and deadlines below are based on U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) guidance; your rights and the bank’s process depend on the account, transfer, and circumstances.

What to do in the first few minutes
- End unexpected contact. Hang up or stop replying to a message claiming there is fraud. Do not provide a password, PIN, one-time verification code, or remote access to your device. A caller ID or message that appears to come from your bank can be faked.
- Reach the bank independently. Use the official app or website you open yourself, or call the number printed on your card or a recent statement. Don’t use a number or link supplied by the caller or message.
- Ask the fraud department to contain the risk. Explain that account access may be compromised. Ask what controls the bank can apply now, whether it can block pending or future unauthorized activity, and whether online access, cards, or account credentials should be locked or replaced. Banks’ controls and procedures vary.
- Secure the sign-in credentials. If you can safely access the account, change its password through the bank’s official channel. If you reused that password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too. If you cannot sign in, ask the bank to guide you through its official recovery process.
Check for unauthorized activity and report it
If you see a suspicious transaction
Review recent and pending transactions, including small unfamiliar debits and activity on linked payment services. Report each item you did not authorize to the bank promptly. Ask how to submit any required written confirmation and whether the bank needs specific information from you.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep a record of each transaction’s date, amount, and description; when and how you contacted the bank; what you reported; and any case number or follow-up instructions. Save relevant statements and messages. Follow the bank’s instructions for written notice, and keep a copy of anything you send.

If you suspect access but see no unauthorized transaction
Tell the bank that you suspect an account compromise even if you have not found a transfer. Ask what monitoring or account protections are available, then check activity and statements regularly for unfamiliar transactions. A lack of visible activity does not establish that the account is secure.
How U.S. reporting deadlines and investigations work
Reporting quickly matters. The CFPB’s guidance describes different notice rules depending on whether a debit card or PIN was lost or stolen and whether an unauthorized transfer appears on a statement. These timeframes affect potential liability; they are not a guarantee that every reported loss will be reimbursed.

| Situation | CFPB guidance | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Debit card lost or stolen | Reporting within two business days of discovering the loss or theft is a key window in the CFPB’s liability guidance. In the stated example, liability is limited to the lesser of $50 or the unauthorized transfers made before notice. | Notify the bank as soon as you discover the loss or theft and ask it to block or replace the card. |
| PIN or security code lost or stolen | The CFPB describes a separate two-business-day reporting warning for a lost or stolen PIN or security code. | Tell the bank promptly if someone else may have obtained it, even if the card is still with you. |
| Unauthorized transaction appears on a statement, but the card was not lost or stolen | The CFPB advises notifying the bank as soon as possible and no later than 60 days after the statement was sent. Waiting longer can expose you to later transfers under the conditions described in its guidance. | Report the transaction immediately rather than waiting for the next statement. |
For a reported unauthorized electronic transfer, the CFPB says a bank or credit union generally has 10 business days to investigate. The described initial period can be 20 business days for an account open less than 30 days. If the institution cannot finish within the applicable initial period, it generally must provide temporary credit, subject to exceptions and procedural requirements. The CFPB also describes a one-business-day correction requirement after the institution determines an error occurred, three business days to report its findings, and a 45-day resolution period, with some cases taking up to 90 days.

These are investigation and resolution rules, not a promise that the bank must return money within 10 days. The applicable process depends on the facts, the type of account and transfer, and whether you meet notice and other procedural requirements. Keep communicating with the bank and respond to requests for information promptly.

Can a transfer made with stolen account information count as unauthorized?
It can. In its Regulation E compliance FAQ, the CFPB says an electronic fund transfer initiated by a hacker using account-access information obtained through fraudulent means such as computer hacking is an unauthorized EFT. The bank must assess the specific facts, including the transaction and the timing of your notice. Report the transfer even if it was made using credentials associated with your account.
Don’t fall for a follow-up impersonation scam
Scammers may pose as bank employees, claim that your money is at risk, and pressure you to act quickly. The FTC advises consumers never to move or transfer money to “protect” it. Do not send funds to a so-called safe account at an unsolicited caller’s direction, and never share a verification code. End the contact and reach the bank through its official app, website, card, or statement.

If you installed software or granted remote access
If the incident involved installing software at a caller’s request or giving someone remote access to a computer or phone, the FTC’s general scam guidance recommends updating security software, scanning for malware, changing passwords, and enabling two-factor authentication. This device response is relevant when remote access or suspicious software was part of the incident; it is not necessary for every suspected bank-account compromise.
