Disconnect the battery only if you can do so safely. Blot visible liquid and position the laptop to drain without shaking it. Don’t charge it, test it, use rice, or apply heat. If liquid reached the keyboard, ports, vents, or interior—or the spill was anything other than a small exterior splash—arrange a professional inspection.
If the laptop, charger, outlet, or surrounding area is wet, don’t reach through standing water. If necessary, switch off power at the outlet or breaker before handling the charger. If the laptop is hot, swollen, smoking, hissing, or giving off a strong chemical odor, move away and follow emergency or hazardous-device guidance; don’t handle or puncture the battery.
The first minute: what to do
- Disconnect external power and accessories. Unplug the charger only when safe, then remove docks, monitors, USB devices, Ethernet, headphones, and other connected equipment.
- Shut the laptop down immediately. Use the normal shutdown command if it responds. If it is frozen or liquid is actively entering it, hold the power button until it switches off. Don’t wait to save files or check whether it still works. The goal is to stop current flowing through contaminated circuitry. See iFixit’s immediate spill guidance.
- Disconnect the battery only if you can do it safely. Remove a user-removable battery. For an internal battery, open the case only if you have the right tools and experience. Don’t pry, bend, puncture, or manipulate a swollen, hot, smoking, leaking, or damaged battery.
- Blot the exterior. Use a clean, absorbent, lint-free cloth or paper towel. Blot rather than scrub, and don’t push liquid into ports or gaps.
- Let liquid drain in a controlled way. If the hinge allows it without strain, open the screen and place the laptop keyboard-down in an inverted V or tent position over a towel. Don’t shake it or position it so liquid runs into another opening.
- Leave it off and arrange an assessment if liquid may have entered. Professional inspection and internal cleaning are especially important for spills through the keyboard, vents, ports, speakers, or hinge.
For more on why power isolation matters and the risks around batteries, see iFixit’s water-damage safety guidance.
What not to do after a spill
- Don’t put the laptop in rice. Rice does not remove contamination from the motherboard, and particles can get into ports, fans, or the keyboard. It can also delay shutdown and inspection. iFixit explains why rice is not a repair.
- Don’t turn it on repeatedly or charge it. A laptop that boots is not necessarily safe; energizing a contaminated board can worsen shorts or corrosion. A wet USB-C, MagSafe, barrel, or other power port may also be damaged when energized. Apple warns against charging a Mac while liquid is present in a USB-C port: Apple’s wet-connector guidance.
- Don’t use a hair dryer, heat gun, oven, radiator, or high-pressure air. Heat can damage plastics, batteries, displays, adhesives, and components. Forced air can spread liquid farther inside. A fan or dehumidifier does not remove residue from the electronics.
- Don’t pour rubbing alcohol or cleaning fluid into the laptop. Exterior cleaning is different from liquid-damage repair. Apple permits a cloth moistened with 70% isopropyl alcohol for certain exterior smudges, while warning users to keep moisture out of openings and seek help if liquid has entered the product: Apple’s cleaning guidance.
- Don’t casually remove keycaps. Modern key mechanisms and clips can be fragile. Blot around accessible gaps; leave deeper keyboard disassembly to a technician unless a service guide for your exact model supports it.
Why the kind of liquid matters
“Dry” does not mean “clean.” Water can short a powered circuit while present; sugars, salts, acids, fats, minerals, and particles can leave residues that corrode contacts or interfere with keys after visible moisture is gone. The liquid-damage guidance from iFixit describes how contamination and corrosion complicate repair.

| Liquid | Main concern | Recommended response |
|---|---|---|
| Distilled or relatively clean water | Short circuit while wet; generally less residue than other liquids. | Shut down immediately. If it entered an opening or the chassis, arrange inspection. |
| Tap water | Minerals and contamination can remain after drying. | Treat as internal liquid damage if it entered an opening. |
| Coffee or tea | Moisture plus possible acidity, oils, sugar, or milk. | Professional cleaning is strongly recommended if it reached the interior. |
| Soda, juice, or sports drink | Sugar and acids can leave sticky residue and contribute to corrosion or keyboard failure. | Don’t rely on drying; arrange prompt internal cleaning. |
| Milk or milk-based drinks | Water, fats, proteins, and residue; odor and biological contamination may follow. | Arrange prompt internal cleaning. |
| Beer, wine, or liquor | Water and potentially sugar, acids, or salts. Alcohol content does not make a drink safe for electronics. | Treat it as contaminated liquid and seek inspection if it entered the laptop. |
| Salt water or seawater | Conductive salt and aggressive corrosion. | Shut down, disconnect power, and seek urgent professional service. |
| Cleaning products or solvents | Chemicals may attack coatings, plastics, adhesives, and electronics. | Don’t add another solvent; get professional advice. |
| Pet urine or other biological fluids | Conductivity, salts, contamination, and odor. | Avoid unnecessary contact with residue and arrange professional cleaning. |
Should you open the laptop?
Get professional service if

- The laptop is unplugged and fully shut down, with no swelling, heat, smoke, or other battery warning sign.
- You have a reliable service guide for the exact model and understand electrostatic-discharge and connector risks.
- You accept that opening or repairing the device could affect service or coverage depending on the terms and circumstances.
- Your goal is safe inspection and power isolation, not improvised board-level repair.
Microsoft’s Surface guidance treats tools, service documentation, and repair ability as prerequisites for self-repair, and notes that damage caused by unauthorized repair may not be covered by its limited warranty: Microsoft Surface self-repair information.
How long should you wait before turning it on?
There is no universal 24-, 48-, or 72-hour wait that makes a laptop safe to power on. Drying time depends on how much liquid entered, where it went, the liquid’s composition, the laptop’s design, and the surrounding conditions. More importantly, drying does not remove dissolved sugars, salts, minerals, or other residue. For a small splash that clearly stayed on the exterior, surface drying may be sufficient; if liquid got beneath keys or into ports, a timer is not a substitute for inspection. iFixit’s laptop liquid-damage guidance explains why the damage depends on contamination and where liquid reaches.

- Cat-Resistant Keyboard Guard: The raised hard-shell cover helps stop cats from stepping on laptop keys, sending accidental messages, or interrupting work while you step away. A practical cat keyboard protector for home offices, shared desks, and remote work
- Measure Before Ordering: Cover measures approximately 15.7 x 10.4 x 1.6 in (40 x 26.5 x 4 cm). Check your keyboard deck, hinges, cables, stand, and armrest clear against these dimensions. Screen size alone does not determine fit
- Clear Acrylic, Raised Protection: Rigid transparent acrylic creates a physical barrier above the keys without hiding the keyboard. It helps keep paws, dust, crumbs, and everyday desk debris off the key area when the laptop is not being typed on
- More Usable Desk Space: When using an external keyboard or stepping away, the flat top can hold light paperwork or small desk items, helping reclaim space above the laptop keyboard. Move the cover between similarly sized laptops as needed
- Simple, Removable Design: Place the acrylic laptop keyboard cover over the keyboard area and lift it away whenever you need to type. The smooth, clear surface wipes clean with a soft damp cloth
If the laptop still works
Normal operation is encouraging, but it does not prove the spill caused no damage. Residue and corrosion can lead to intermittent or delayed problems. If internal liquid exposure is suspected, don’t keep using the laptop as a test; have it assessed before relying on it.
- Intermittent keyboard keys or trackpad problems
- Charging or USB-C faults
- Unexpected shutdowns or sleep/wake failures
- Display flicker, or problems with Wi-Fi, webcam, microphone, or speakers
- Changes in battery charging or battery life
These symptoms may appear later; the rationale is corrosion and residue, described in iFixit’s MacBook liquid-damage guide.

Protect your files before authorizing repair
Device repair and data recovery are separate goals. Don’t risk potentially recoverable hardware by repeatedly trying to boot it. Tell the repair provider that the files matter and ask what the proposed work could do to the storage or data before authorizing a reset, reinstall, drive replacement, or logic-board replacement. Cloud-synced files may be available elsewhere, but don’t assume syncing completed. Data recovery is not guaranteed, especially with integrated or encrypted storage. AppleCare+ terms exclude recovery of software and user data, so hardware coverage is not the same as data-recovery coverage: AppleCare+ for Mac terms.
MacBook, Windows laptop, or Chromebook: check the exact model and plan

Apple says liquid damage is not covered by its standard one-year limited warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan. AppleCare+ for Mac can cover qualifying accidental damage from handling, including liquid spills, subject to its terms and service fees. The linked U.S. terms list fees of $99 for screen-only or external-enclosure-only accidental damage and $299 for other accidental damage, plus applicable tax; these are U.S. terms and can vary by plan, model, and policy changes. Check your own plan before relying on those figures. See Apple’s liquid-damage and warranty information and the U.S. AppleCare+ terms.

Some Mac laptops have liquid-contact indicators that can help a service provider assess exposure, but an indicator is not a diagnosis. Certain recent MacBooks can also show a liquid-detection alert for a wet USB-C port or connected accessory; don’t charge through that port until the issue is resolved. See Apple’s guidance for liquid in a USB-C connector.
Windows laptops and Chromebooks
There is no single Windows-wide or Chromebook-wide spill procedure; instructions and repair options depend on the manufacturer and model. Use the device’s specific support page or service manual, but don’t delay shutdown to look it up. Manufacturer coverage also differs: Lenovo classifies liquid spills as customer-induced or accidental damage that may be covered by Accidental Damage Protection, depending on plan and region. Dell says its basic support excludes many accidental-damage categories, including liquid spills; enhanced plans may cover some incidents. Check the service contract for your device.

Before opening the case or authorizing work
- Photograph the spill and the laptop’s exterior condition, and note the date and time.
- Find the receipt, serial number, warranty status, and any accidental-damage plan. Check the plan’s purchase date, eligibility, claim rules, and exclusions; a plan should not be treated as retroactive coverage for a spill that has already happened.
- Ask the service provider whether it preserves data and whether its proposed repair could erase, replace, or make storage inaccessible.
- Request the diagnostic fee and a written estimate, including what happens if repair is unsuccessful.
- Compare the estimate with the laptop’s age, condition, replacement value, and the importance of its data.
Ordinary manufacturer warranties commonly exclude accidental liquid damage; separate accidental-damage plans may cover it, but terms, fees, exclusions, and regional availability vary. Check the actual contract. For more examples, see Apple’s warranty position, Lenovo’s customer-induced damage guidance, and Dell’s basic-support exclusions.
Choose a repair provider for the job you need
Ask whether the provider performs liquid-damage cleaning and motherboard repair in-house or mainly replaces major assemblies. If data preservation is the priority, say so before work begins and ask about board-level diagnosis, integrated or encrypted storage, and the provider’s data-handling policy. A general shop that mainly replaces screens and batteries may not be equipped for motherboard corrosion or data-preserving repair. No provider can guarantee that damaged data will be recoverable.
Repair or replace?
Repair is more attractive when the laptop is relatively new or valuable, damage is limited to replaceable parts, important local data is involved, coverage applies, or the estimate is clearly below the cost of a comparable replacement. Replacement may be more sensible when the motherboard and multiple assemblies are damaged, the machine is older or low-value, parts are unavailable, the battery is unsafe, or the estimate approaches replacement cost. There is no reliable universal repair-cost percentage: parts, design, age, and the availability of board-level repair all affect the decision.

A competent assessment typically starts by recording the model, serial number, spill type, approximate amount, and incident time. The technician should isolate power, inspect affected components and connectors, remove residue using model-appropriate methods, and test parts methodically rather than repeatedly powering a contaminated board. Depending on findings, the repair may involve cleaning, component replacement, or board-level work; not every shop performs all three. Ask what was inspected and tested, including charging, keyboard, trackpad, display, audio, Wi-Fi, USB, and storage as applicable.
