If you smell smoke coming from a neighbor’s home, move away from danger and call your local emergency number or fire department. Do not enter to investigate. If smoke or a fire affects your own building, get outside by a safe route and stay outside. Tell responders where the smoke is coming from and whether anyone may be inside or trapped.
What to do first
- Move to a safe place. Do not approach flames or heavy smoke, and do not enter the neighbor’s home. If your own home or building is affected, leave by a safe route. Do not delay a call to confirm the source.
- Call emergency services. Use your local emergency number or call the fire department. In the United States, call 911. Give the address, explain where you smell smoke and what you can see, and report any information you have about people who may be inside.
- Warn others only if you can do so safely. Do not go back into a smoky area or put yourself at risk to alert someone. Share what you know with responders.
- Stay outside. Do not re-enter for people, pets, or belongings. Tell firefighters who or what may still be inside and wait until they say it is safe.
Smoke is dangerous even when flames are not visible. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) says smoke and toxic gases kill more people than flames do.

If smoke affects your building
When your route out is clear
Leave promptly using a safe exit, close the door behind you if you can, and go to a safe outdoor location. In a high-rise, use the stairs rather than an elevator unless firefighters direct otherwise. Stay outside and tell responders if anyone may be trapped. Follow incident instructions from firefighters if they differ from general guidance.

When smoke or heat blocks your route
Do not try to pass through smoke or fire. Close a door between you and the smoke, cover vents and cracks around the door with cloth if possible, and call 911 or your fire department. Tell dispatch exactly where you are. Signal from a window with a light-colored cloth or flashlight so responders can see you.
Should you try to put out the fire?
Do not take risks to investigate or fight a fire. USFA advises leaving and calling 911 if you are unsure whether it is safe to use an extinguisher. Its extinguisher guidance says to use one only if all of its safety questions can be answered “yes”; otherwise, alert others, leave, and call for help. A neighbor’s home is not a reason to enter a dangerous area.

Prepare before an emergency
Smoke alarms are for early warning and escape—not something to buy or install during an active emergency. USFA recommends alarms on every level of the home and inside and outside sleeping areas, interconnected so that when one sounds they all sound. Replace alarms ten years from their manufacture date. These recommendations come from U.S. guidance; use local fire-safety advice where you live.
The emergency-number references here reflect USFA guidance for the United States. If you are elsewhere, call your local emergency number; procedures can vary by country and building.
