What to Do If You Shared Your Medicare Number With a Scammer

If you gave your Medicare Number to someone you now suspect was a scammer, stop communicating with that person, do not send more information or money, and call Medicare directly at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). TTY users can call 1-877-486-2048. Explain what happened and ask whether Medicare sees possible misuse and whether any additional protection, including a replacement number, is appropriate.

Sharing the number does not prove that anyone has used it, and it does not automatically cancel your coverage or benefits. The next step depends on whether the number was merely disclosed, whether unfamiliar claims or medical records appear, and whether you also gave the person financial or other identity information.

Do these things first

  1. End the contact. Hang up, stop replying to messages, and do not click links or send photographs of cards, money, passwords, or additional documents. Medicare says it will not call you uninvited and ask for personal or private information. If a caller demanded information or payment or threatened to cancel your benefits, call Medicare yourself using the published number rather than returning the call.
  2. Call Medicare. Dial 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227); TTY users can call 1-877-486-2048. Say that you disclosed your Medicare Number, describe how the contact occurred, and ask whether another person may be using the number. Also ask what Medicare recommends in your specific case and whether a number change is warranted. Official guidance tells people to call when they think someone else is using the number; it does not promise a new number for every disclosure.
  3. Write down what happened. Record the date and time, telephone number or online account used, the caller’s name or claimed organization, exactly what information you gave, and any messages, receipts, claim details, or provider names that look suspicious. This is practical preparation for reporting, not a required government form.
  4. Check your Medicare and provider paperwork. Compare every service, date, facility, diagnosis, medication, and charge with care you actually received. Keep copies of statements and mark anything unfamiliar before contacting a provider, insurer, or Medicare.
  5. Report any discrepancy promptly. Contact the provider that appears on an incorrect record, notify your health insurer, and call Medicare if you are covered by it. Follow the Federal Trade Commission’s medical-identity-theft recovery process at IdentityTheft.gov when records, treatment, prescriptions, or charges do not belong to you.
  6. Handle other exposed information separately. If the scammer also received bank details, a payment-card number, Social Security information, an email password, or identity documents, contact each affected institution through a telephone number or website you already know is genuine. Medicare reporting does not resolve those separate exposures.

What a disclosed Medicare Number does—and does not—mean

Your Medicare Number is a unique identifier for your Medicare coverage; it is not your Social Security number. Giving it to a stranger creates a risk that the information could be misused, but disclosure alone is not proof of medical identity theft. Medical identity theft occurs when someone uses personal information without consent to obtain care, prescriptions, services, or payment, or to submit fraudulent claims.

There are three practical situations:

What you know now What to do What not to assume
The number was disclosed, but no suspicious claim or record is known Call Medicare, explain the contact, ask whether any protective action is appropriate, and begin checking statements. Do not assume a replacement number is automatic or that misuse has already occurred.
An unfamiliar service, claim, diagnosis, prescription, or provider appears Contact the provider and insurer, call Medicare, preserve the records, and use the FTC medical-identity-theft recovery steps. Do not dismiss a wrong record as a harmless billing mistake until it has been investigated.
The scammer also obtained financial or account credentials Contact the relevant bank, card issuer, email provider, or other institution through a verified channel and follow the FTC recovery process for the type of information exposed. Do not expect a Medicare report to secure unrelated accounts.

How to look for medical misuse

Review Original Medicare claims online

If you have Original Medicare, a secure Medicare.gov account can show claims as they are processed. Review the service date, provider, type of service, and amount. A claim may appear before a paper statement arrives, so checking the account can help you spot an issue sooner.

Medicare’s current sign-in guidance lists ID.me, CLEAR, and Login.gov as identity-service options for a Medicare account. Connecting an existing Medicare account to one of these services changes how you sign in. Use an email address that is not shared with another person, and complete identity verification only if you can do so safely.

If you do not have a computer or smartphone, or cannot safely complete online verification, call Medicare for help instead. Do not ask an unsolicited caller to create or access the account for you.

Compare paper records and provider receipts

Look at Medicare statements, insurer explanations of benefits, pharmacy records, and receipts from doctors, hospitals, laboratories, and other facilities. Check whether the listed treatment, diagnosis, medication, date, and provider match your experience. Pay attention to services you never requested, repeated charges, or a record showing that a procedure occurred when you were elsewhere.

Challenge an incorrect record

Start with the provider identified on the statement. Explain which entry is wrong, ask for a corrected record or claim, and retain the correspondence. Notify your health insurer as well. If the provider cannot resolve the issue, or you believe the entry is intentional fraud, report it to Medicare and follow the FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov medical recovery instructions. Keep copies of bills, claim numbers, names, and dates for every conversation.

Where to report suspected fraud or identity theft

Situation Official route Contact
You think someone else may be using your Medicare Number or need help with a Medicare claim Medicare 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227); TTY 1-877-486-2048
You want to report suspected Medicare fraud Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General 1-800-HHS-TIPS (1-800-447-8477); TTY 1-800-377-4950; tips.oig.hhs.gov
You have Medicare Advantage or a Part D prescription plan and the issue involves suspected fraud I-MEDIC 1-877-7SAFERX (1-877-772-3379)
You suspect medical identity theft or another form of identity theft Federal Trade Commission IdentityTheft.gov recovery guidance
You want confidential beneficiary fraud education or assistance Senior Medicare Patrol 1-877-808-2468

Use the route that matches the problem, and keep the confirmation number or case details when one is provided. Telephone numbers, online forms, and sign-in options can change, so verify current details on the agencies’ official pages when you act.

Ask Medicare about a replacement number—without expecting an automatic change

Medicare’s card guidance says to call if you think someone else is using your Medicare Number. It also explains how to print a card from an online account or order a replacement for a lost or damaged card. Those ordinary card-replacement instructions are not the same as a decision to issue a new number after suspected exposure.

When you call, describe the disclosure and ask whether Medicare believes a number change is justified. The reviewed official guidance does not establish a universal rule that every accidental disclosure qualifies. Medicare makes the case-specific decision.

If Medicare issues a replacement card or number, coverage and benefits remain the same. Securely destroy the old card when the replacement-card letter instructs you to do so and begin using the new one. People enrolled in Medicare Advantage should continue using the plan’s member ID card for plan services, while following Medicare’s instructions about the Medicare Number itself.

Protect yourself from a second contact

Expect pressure tactics

A scammer may call again pretending to be Medicare, a doctor’s office, an insurer, or an investigator. Medicare advises you not to share personal information with someone who contacts you unless you initiated the contact and permitted follow-up. Threats that your benefits will stop, demands for immediate payment, requests for a one-time code, or instructions to move money are warning signs. End the conversation and call the organization using a number from a card, statement, or official website you located independently.

Do not “verify” the scammer’s story

Do not call back the number shown on caller ID, reply to an email, or use a link supplied in a text message to reach Medicare. Caller ID and logos can be forged. The safe test is whether you can start the contact yourself through a known official channel.

Keep a simple incident file

  • A timeline of calls, texts, emails, and letters
  • The information disclosed, separated into Medicare, financial, account, and identity-document categories
  • Copies of statements, claim pages, provider correspondence, and screenshots
  • The date, department, and reference number for each report

Store the file securely and do not email unredacted card images unless an official agency specifically instructs you through a verified process.

If you find an unfamiliar claim or medical record

  1. Save the statement or take a screenshot showing the claim number, provider, date, service, and charge.
  2. Call the provider’s billing or records department using contact information from a legitimate statement or the provider’s independently located website.
  3. State clearly that you did not receive the listed care, or that the diagnosis, medication, or charge is incorrect. Ask how the record will be corrected and request written confirmation.
  4. Notify your insurer and Medicare. Tell Medicare whether the issue is a billing error, a suspected false claim, or possible use of your Medicare Number by another person.
  5. Follow the FTC medical-identity-theft recovery steps and keep every response. If a provider refuses to correct an inaccurate medical record, ask what formal records-dispute process is available.

If you shared more than your Medicare Number

The response should match the additional information. A bank account or debit-card number calls for the bank or card issuer’s fraud department. A credit-card number calls for the issuer’s official fraud channel. A Social Security number or identity document requires the broader identity-theft recovery process. An email password requires changing the password through the provider’s genuine sign-in page and reviewing account-recovery methods. If the scammer received several categories, handle each one rather than assuming a single report covers everything.

Tell Medicare exactly what else was disclosed. That detail helps the representative direct you to the right agency, but it does not replace contacting the other institution. Never provide a new password, verification code, or payment to someone who claims to be helping you recover from the first scam.

What to expect after you report

Medicare may ask when the contact occurred, how the person reached you, what information was disclosed, and whether you have seen suspicious claims. A provider or insurer may request a copy of the statement and a written explanation. Keep your incident file current and continue reviewing new claims and medical paperwork.

If nothing suspicious appears, continue ordinary statement review and remain alert for follow-up impersonation. If a claim or record does appear, escalate through the provider, insurer, Medicare, and FTC routes rather than waiting for several questionable entries to accumulate. Your coverage and benefits are not automatically lost because a number was exposed; the purpose of prompt reporting is to identify and correct misuse if it occurs.
