Stop contacting the supposed recruiter, do not send anything else, and contact the financial institution or payment service immediately if money or banking details were involved. Then take the branch-specific steps for any Social Security number, identity document, password, or device access you disclosed. Report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), preserve the messages and payment records, and watch for misuse. Sharing information does not prove that identity theft has already occurred, but a fast, targeted response can limit the damage.
This guidance is for people in the United States. If you live elsewhere, use your bank’s local fraud number and your country’s national fraud-reporting service.

Do these first, before replying again
- End the conversation. Do not click another link, complete another form, buy equipment or training, or send a “refundable” payment. Block or mute the contact after saving the evidence you need.
- Verify the employer independently. Find the company’s official website yourself and use a phone number or email address published there. Do not use contact details in the suspicious message. A real job-board listing, polished video interview, company logo, or convincing briefing is not proof that the offer is genuine.
- List exactly what you disclosed. Separate bank or card details, money sent, Social Security number (SSN), driver’s-license or other identity-document data, passwords, and access to a phone or computer. The correct recovery step depends on this list.
- Save evidence. Keep the listing, emails, text messages, chat exports, phone numbers, payment receipts, account names, and web addresses. The FTC pages cited here do not set a mandatory retention period, so keep the records as long as they may help your bank, payment provider, or an investigator.
Job scammers often ask for sensitive information before a real interview or hire. The FTC summarizes the warning this way: “Scammy recruiters ask for your personal information up front.”
If you shared bank details or payment credentials
Call your bank or credit union now. Use the telephone number printed on your card or an official app or website that you opened independently, not a number in the recruiter’s message. Tell the representative what information was exposed and when.

If you sent money
Contact the company that moved the money immediately and ask whether a reversal, cancellation, or refund is possible. The correct contact depends on how you paid:
| How the scammer was paid | Who to contact immediately | What to request |
|---|---|---|
| Bank transfer | Your bank or credit union | Report the fraudulent transfer and ask whether it can be stopped or reversed. |
| Debit or credit card | The card issuer | Report the transaction and ask about dispute or reversal procedures. |
| Payment app | The app’s official support channel and the linked bank or card issuer | Report the payment and ask whether recovery is possible. |
| Wire transfer | The wire-transfer company and your bank, if involved | Request an immediate fraud recall or cancellation. |
| Gift card | The gift-card issuer | Report the scam, provide the receipt and card details, and ask whether funds can be recovered. |
Recovery is not guaranteed, especially after funds have been withdrawn, but waiting reduces the chance of intervention. Do not pay anyone who later promises guaranteed recovery.
If you shared your Social Security number or identity-document information
An exposed SSN or identity document can be used in attempts to obtain employment, file a tax return, open accounts, or impersonate you. That possibility does not establish that misuse has happened. Use the FTC’s path that matches what you know:

- If you know the information was used, or you suspect misuse, go to IdentityTheft.gov and follow the recovery plan.
- If you are unsure whether the SSN has been used, or it has not yet been used, use IdentityTheft.gov/databreach for protective steps.
IdentityTheft.gov can generate an FTC Identity Theft Report, an IRS Identity Theft Affidavit, and a personalized recovery plan. If you choose, the FTC says the service can submit the affidavit to the IRS online.
Check for employment misuse
Someone using your SSN for a job may create earnings that do not belong to you. Review your work history through your my Social Security account. If you see an employer or wages you do not recognize, contact the Social Security Administration and report the error.
The FTC also identifies an E-Verify account lock as an available safeguard. Locking your SSN can help prevent its use for employment; an employer using E-Verify must obtain additional information from a person attempting to use a locked number. Follow the current E-Verify instructions when setting up or managing that lock.

Watch for tax-identity warning signs
Tax identity theft may first appear when the IRS rejects your return as a duplicate, or when the IRS sends a notice about earnings or a duplicate filing that you did not submit. Follow the instructions in the IRS notice rather than replying to a number or link supplied by the scammer. Keep the notice with your other records and complete the IdentityTheft.gov recovery steps.
If you shared a password or login code
- Change the password immediately on the affected service.
- Change it everywhere else you reused it. Use a different, strong password for each account.
- Turn on two-factor authentication wherever the service offers it.
- Review account activity, recovery email addresses, phone numbers, active sessions, and forwarding rules for changes you did not make.
- If the scammer locked you out, use the service’s official account-recovery process. Reach the service through its independently found website or app, not through a recovery link in the original message.
A password can remain dangerous even when no fraudulent transaction is visible: reuse may give the scammer a route into email, cloud storage, social accounts, or other services. Complete the changes on every account that shared the password before moving on.
If the scammer accessed your phone or computer
Remote-access software, a downloaded file, or a screen-sharing session can expose stored credentials and files. Take the following actions on the affected device:

Submit a report to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Include the recruiter’s identity, the job title and listing, the dates of contact, what information was requested or sent, and any payment details. Also report the incident to the bank, card issuer, payment app, wire service, or gift-card issuer involved; those companies handle transaction recovery separately from the FTC report.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse a simple incident log to avoid missing a step:
| Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Date and time of each contact | Shows when information or money changed hands. |
| Information disclosed | Lets each provider apply the right protection to the right account. |
| Payment method, amount, and reference number | Gives the payment provider the details needed to investigate. |
| Accounts, devices, and passwords affected | Confirms where changes and scans are still required. |
| Names of companies, case numbers, and instructions received | Creates a reliable record for follow-up calls and notices. |
How to recognize the real employer and avoid a second loss
Scammers can impersonate a known company, copy a real vacancy, conduct a virtual interview, and use authentic-looking branding. The decisive check is independent contact with the employer through information you found yourself. Real employers do not need your SSN, driver’s-license details, or bank information before they have actually interviewed and hired you. The FTC’s July 2025 guidance states: “Real employers won’t ask for that kind of information before they’ve actually interviewed and hired you.”
Best Value
Be especially cautious of equipment charges, requests to buy items from a specified seller, or promises that a later reimbursement will make the payment safe. A check or transfer that appears to cover equipment can be part of the fraud; do not spend or forward funds merely because a balance appears in your account.
Expect and block recovery scams
After you report a job scam, another criminal may pose as a government employee, bank investigator, lawyer, or “recovery specialist.” The FTC warns that these contacts may demand an upfront fee or ask for more personal or financial information. An unsolicited promise to recover your money is not proof that the caller is legitimate.
- Do not pay an unexpected recovery fee, tax, deposit, or shipping charge.
- Do not share account numbers, one-time codes, passwords, or identity documents with an unsolicited helper.
- End the contact and call the bank, payment provider, or agency through an independently verified channel.

Over the next few days
Check transactions and account settings, complete the IdentityTheft.gov steps appropriate to your situation, and review your work history if your SSN was exposed. Keep every case number and follow-up instruction in the incident log.
When notices or unfamiliar activity appear
Respond through the official channel named by the bank, Social Security Administration, or IRS. An unfamiliar wage record, duplicate tax filing notice, unrecognized transaction, or account-change alert is a reason to contact that organization promptly; it is not a reason to trust a new caller who claims to represent it.
What the exposure means—and what it does not
The consequences depend on the information disclosed. Bank details create an immediate account-monitoring and payment-recovery issue. An SSN or identity document creates an identity-misuse risk that may surface later through employment or tax records. A password creates an account-takeover risk, especially when reused. Device access can expose several categories at once. None of these exposures alone proves that a criminal has already used the information, so match the response to the category and keep watching for concrete signs.
