What to Do If You Shared Fake News by Mistake

Delete the share only after you have checked the facts, then correct the record where people saw it and apologize plainly. If the post could still cause harm, report it through the platform’s current reporting tools. The phrase “fake news” is familiar, but the more precise terms are misinformation (false information shared without an apparent intent to harm) and disinformation (false information spread deliberately). Usage varies among organizations; UNESCO discourages using “fake news” as a descriptive category because false content is not news.

Start with a pause, not another share

When friends point out that a post is false, resist the urge to answer immediately with a second explanation. A fast but unverified correction can spread a new error and make the situation harder to repair. Take a screenshot or copy the original link for your own reference, stop reposting it, and check the claim against a credible source first.

The Australian eSafety Commissioner’s advice for an accidental share is direct: delete the post and apologize. That is useful interpersonal guidance, but deletion alone may leave people who saw the original unsure about what changed. A visible correction is usually the safer addition when the platform and audience make it practical.

Verify the claim before you correct it

Identify exactly what was asserted

Separate the claim from the post’s headline, image, caption and comments. Ask what can actually be checked: a date, a number, a person’s action, a quoted statement, a location or a prediction. Viral posts often combine one true detail with an unsupported conclusion. Correct the specific false part rather than declaring the entire subject fake.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use an authoritative source

Look for a primary source or a reputable organization with responsibility for the subject. Depending on the claim, that might be a government agency, court, university, public-health authority, company filing or the full original interview. Read beyond a search-result snippet and check the publication date, geographic scope and whether the information has since changed.

UNESCO’s journalism handbook on fact-checking and social-media verification recommends checking evidence before publication. Its media-literacy guidance also warns against unnecessary amplification: you can verify a claim without repeatedly quoting the false version.

Record what supports the correction

Save the source URL and the relevant passage or data point. This gives you a concise answer if someone asks how you know the first post was wrong. Do not present an unverified screenshot, anonymous account or search snippet as proof simply because it agrees with the correction you want to make.

Post a clear correction as soon as you have verified it

A useful correction has three parts: identify the mistake, give the accurate information and point to the source. PBS Standards describes its newsroom practice as promptly posting correct information, clearly explaining what was wrong with the earlier post, and avoiding further spread of the inaccuracy.

Lead with the accurate information so people who only skim the update see the correction first. Mention the false claim only as much as necessary for people to recognize which post you are fixing. Do not repeat a sensational headline, image or call to action in full.

You can adapt this short, honest wording:

“I shared this earlier, but it was wrong. The verified information is [brief correction], according to [credible source]. I’m sorry for passing it along.”

Replace the bracketed parts with specific information and a working source link. If the evidence is still uncertain, do not label your post a correction yet; say that you are checking the claim and avoid stating an unconfirmed alternative as fact.

Decide whether to delete, edit or leave a visible record

The right treatment depends on who saw the post, whether it is still spreading and what the service allows. eSafety addresses an individual’s accidental share, while PBS sets a transparency standard for a publisher. These are different contexts, not universal rules that conflict.

Situation Practical action Reason
Private or low-reach accidental share Delete the original after posting a correction or acknowledgment where people who saw it can find one; apologize. Removal stops further circulation, while the acknowledgment tells the original audience what changed.
Public post that is still attracting views Use an edit, correction label, reply or follow-up post that is visibly connected to the original, if the platform permits it. People may encounter the original through shares, searches or screenshots and need an unmistakable correction.
Publisher, journalist or high-reach account Preserve an audit trail and issue a prompt, public correction explaining the error; follow the organization’s corrections policy. PBS’s editorial practice treats a silent deletion as generally insufficient because accountability and reader trust require a record.
Post creates an immediate safety or privacy risk Remove or restrict access quickly, then publish the clearest feasible acknowledgment and correction without reproducing harmful details. Stopping ongoing harm takes priority, but the audience still needs accurate information.

If you delete first because the content is dangerous, add a correction in the same channel whenever possible. If the service has an edit history, correction label or pinned reply, use it. If it has none, a new post that identifies the removed item and states the verified facts is better than silently disappearing.

Apologize without making excuses

A short apology is more credible than a long defense of how you were misled. Acknowledge your action, state the correction and, if useful, briefly explain the failure—such as trusting a cropped screenshot or not checking the date. Do not blame friends for noticing the error or imply that forwarding a popular post made it safe.

I’m sorry.” Answer reasonable questions, but do not argue with every comment or turn the correction into a debate about your intentions.

The eSafety Commissioner specifically recommends deleting the post and apologizing for an accidental share. A brief explanation of how the mistake happened can help repair the immediate relationship, provided it does not become an excuse or repeat the falsehood.

Correct every audience that received the claim

Group chats and private messages

Send the correction to the same group, thread or recipients who received the original. People in a private chat may never see your public update. Keep the message direct and include the source. If someone forwarded your post, ask them to pass along the correction rather than assuming the original will disappear.

Stories, short-lived posts and reposts

Use the same channel and audience setting for the correction when feasible. A correction posted only to a smaller audience may miss people who saw the original. If the service has expired the original, describe it briefly enough for recipients to identify it without restating its most shareable wording.

Work, school or community accounts

Follow the account owner’s correction process and notify a moderator or editor. Keep records of the original, the verification and the correction. A responsible person may need to update a website, newsletter, event notice or printed material as well.

Do not amplify the false claim while fixing it

UNESCO’s media-literacy guidance recommends countering misinformation without unnecessary amplification. Put the verified fact in the first sentence, avoid provocative images and do not tag large accounts merely to attract attention. Crop or blur harmful personal information in screenshots. Do not quote a false claim in a headline-like format that can be detached from your correction when others reshare it.

When a detailed explanation is necessary, link to the authoritative source and explain the evidence in your own words. Repeating the false version several times, even to deny it, can make the wording more familiar and easier to remember.

Report content that remains harmful or violates rules

If the original item is still online and could cause harm, use the platform’s in-app reporting function. The World Health Organization describes reporting false or misleading content to the hosting platform, particularly in its COVID-19 guidance. Menus, labels and eligibility rules differ by service and change over time, so use the platform’s current help center or report menu for exact steps.

Reporting is not a substitute for your correction. It alerts the service to content that may breach its rules; your correction reaches the people who received your share. If the post includes threats, private personal data, impersonation or instructions that could endanger someone, preserve evidence and consider contacting the relevant authority in your country.

If someone acted on the misinformation

Contact affected people directly and prioritize practical harm reduction. For a false event cancellation, send the accurate time and location. For a health claim, point people to the appropriate health authority and encourage professional advice rather than diagnosing them. For financial, legal or safety claims, state clearly that your earlier post was unreliable and identify the official source people should use.

Do not promise that deletion will undo every consequence. Screenshots and private forwards can persist. Focus on reaching the audiences most likely to rely on the claim and provide the information they need to make a safer decision.

Build a simple verification habit for next time

  • Check the date: an old article or image may be recirculated as current.
  • Check the source: distinguish an original document from a commentary account or screenshot.
  • Check the context: confirm location, population, units and whether a quote is complete.
  • Check independent confirmation: look for another reliable source with direct evidence, not a chain of sites repeating one post.
  • Check your motive: if a claim makes you angry or delighted, pause before sharing.
  • Save a correction path: know where the platform’s report, edit and audience controls are before you need them.

These checks are not a guarantee that you will never make a mistake. They reduce the chance that speed, emotion or a convincing graphic will replace verification.

Why a prompt, open correction matters

People judge reliability partly by how an account handles errors. PBS Standards reports that 86 percent of respondents in a 2018 Gallup/Knight Foundation survey said correcting errors quickly and openly was “very important” to deciding whether a news organization could be trusted. That figure concerns news organizations, not every personal account, but the underlying lesson applies: acknowledging an error gives the audience a way to distinguish a corrected mistake from a claim being quietly abandoned.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an individual, the goal is not to imitate a newsroom’s paperwork. It is to make the change visible to the people who may still rely on what you shared, while avoiding another wave of attention for the false claim.

Learn the terminology without getting stuck on it

“Misinformation” commonly means false information shared without an intention to cause harm, although organizations use the term differently. “Disinformation” usually describes false information spread deliberately. Your responsibility after an accidental share does not depend on proving which label applies: verify the facts, correct the audience and reduce further harm.

UNESCO’s Journalism, Fake News & Disinformation: Handbook for Journalism Education and Training is a 128-page publication from 2018 with lessons on fact-checking and social-media verification. It is optional educational reading, not a prerequisite for correcting one post.

A quick correction checklist

  1. Stop sharing the claim and save the original for reference.
  2. Verify the precise assertion with a credible or primary source.
  3. Write the accurate information first and identify the earlier post as wrong.
  4. Publish the correction where the original audience will see it.
  5. Delete, edit or restrict the original according to the risk and platform features.
  6. Apologize without excuses and briefly explain the mistake only if it helps.
  7. Send the correction to private chats, groups or recipients who may miss the public update.
  8. Report remaining harmful or rule-breaking content through the platform’s current tools.
  9. Contact anyone who may have made a decision based on the false information.
