Tell them when and where the exposure may have happened, and follow their instructions. Do not go to a clinic or hospital without calling first; the provider can arrange an evaluation that helps protect other patients.
What to do first
- Call your healthcare provider now. Say that you or your child may have been exposed to measles. If a public exposure notice named a place and date, or you know who had measles, share those details.
- Give the provider relevant health information. Include the exposed person’s age, whether they are pregnant or severely immunocompromised, any medical reason they cannot receive a live vaccine, and any known measles vaccination or prior-infection history.
- Find vaccination records if they are handy, but do not delay the call to look for them. A provider may assess immunity using records, age, or laboratory evidence, and can tell you how to proceed safely.
- Follow instructions from your provider and public health department. They can determine whether an in-person evaluation is needed and how to arrange it without exposing others.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises people who have been exposed to call their healthcare provider immediately. This is important even when the exposed person feels well, because preventive options have short time windows.

Ask promptly about post-exposure options
CDC clinical guidance describes two clinician-directed options after exposure. They are not interchangeable, and a provider or public health authority must decide whether either is appropriate based on the person’s immunity, health, and timing.
Recommended Free Tools
| Option | CDC timing after initial exposure | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| MMR vaccine | May be given within 72 hours | A provider determines whether the exposed person is eligible and whether vaccination is appropriate. |
| Immune globulin (IG) | May be given within 6 days | A provider or public health authority assesses whether it is appropriate; CDC prioritizes certain vulnerable close contacts. |
Do not try to choose or obtain treatment on your own, and do not wait while deciding which option might apply. CDC guidance says MMR vaccine and IG should not be administered at the same time because IG can invalidate the vaccine.

Who should be assessed especially quickly?
Call without delay if the exposed person is an infant younger than 6 months, is pregnant, is severely immunocompromised, or has another medical reason they cannot receive MMR. CDC’s May 2026 overview identifies these groups among those for whom IG may be prioritized after close contact. That does not mean every person in these groups automatically receives IG; an individualized clinical and public-health assessment determines care.
Know what symptoms to watch for
CDC’s public exposure guidance, updated August 5, 2026, says measles symptoms commonly appear 7–15 days after contact. Early symptoms can include fever, cough, runny nose, and red or watery eyes, followed by a rash. Monitor the exposed person and follow the provider’s instructions about what to do if symptoms begin.

If measles is suspected, call the provider before going to a clinic, urgent-care center, or hospital. Tell them about the possible exposure and symptoms so they can plan an evaluation that limits other people’s exposure. If measles is diagnosed, follow the isolation instructions you receive; CDC’s public guidance says to stay home until the fifth day after rash onset.
Reduce the chance of exposing other people
Measles spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. CDC says the virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after the person leaves a space. A person with measles can spread it from four days before through four days after the rash begins.

CDC reports that up to 90% of close contacts who are not immune may become infected. This is a population statistic about non-immune close contacts, not a prediction for every exposed person.
If the exposed person is not immune and did not receive post-exposure prophylaxis, ask the provider when it is safe to return to school, childcare, work, or other settings. CDC says avoiding settings with people at high risk may be needed for up to 21 days after exposure, including places such as schools, hospitals, and childcare centers. Do not treat that as a universal quarantine rule: instructions can vary with the exposure and setting, and local public health directions take precedence.

When to seek emergency care
For someone who is sick with measles, CDC advises emergency care for rapidly worsening symptoms or serious warning signs, including:
- Trouble breathing, pain with breathing or coughing, or blue color around the mouth
- Dehydration, persistent fever or headache, or severe weakness
- Confusion, decreased alertness, or very low energy
- A young child who is difficult to feed
Call the emergency department before arriving and tell them measles is suspected. These warning signs concern a person who is sick; possible exposure alone does not mean someone will develop measles.
