Yes, a TV can sometimes be returned without its original box, but there is no universal rule. The retailer, seller, TV size, order eligibility and return method determine what you can do. Start the return from the order page, read the method offered for that specific television, and ask about a store return or retailer-arranged pickup before trying to ship a large set yourself.
Do not assume that a standard parcel label, loose bubble wrap or a replacement carton will be accepted. A retailer may waive repackaging for a store return, require a securely packed replacement box for mail, or route an oversized television to a pickup service.

Start with the order-specific return instructions
The return page for your purchase is more authoritative than a general help article. It accounts for the seller, delivery method, item size, return window and available transportation options.

- Select the television and choose Return, Return or replace or the equivalent current label.
- Record every method shown: store drop-off, retailer pickup, carrier pickup, mail label or another arranged service.
- Read the packaging instructions before moving the TV. Note whether the retailer supplies a label, requires repackaging, limits the item by size or asks you to contact support.
- If the only visible option requires a box you no longer have, contact customer service and explain the TV’s dimensions, approximate weight and missing original packaging. Ask specifically whether a store return, pickup or approved replacement carton is available.
Keep the TV powered off until you know where it must go. Moving it repeatedly before the route is confirmed increases the chance of a cracked panel or missing accessories.

Compare the possible return routes

A return authorization does not automatically mean every route is available. A method shown for a small electronic item may not apply to a large-screen TV.
What the major U.S. retailer instructions say
Best Buy: large TVs need a different plan
Best Buy’s U.S. return and exchange policy says eligible shipped-and-sold purchases can be returned to a Best Buy store, and eligible shipped returns can use a prepaid label. The policy specifically excludes TVs over 50 inches from that prepaid-label shipping route. It also directs customers to call about return and pickup options for certain heavy items delivered by truck.
That exclusion matters even if the website generates a normal-looking return workflow. For a television larger than 50 inches, ask Best Buy which location or pickup service is authorized instead of placing it in a random carton and attaching a parcel label.
Best Buy’s 2025 Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Report describes its own logistics solution: “For televisions that need to be shipped and do not have their original box, we use a modular packaging unit called a ‘TV taco,’ or a recyclable cardboard corrugate box.” The statement, in the 2025 report, shows that replacement packaging is possible in a retail operation. It does not say that customers can request or buy a TV taco, or that a carrier will accept any customer-built package.

Walmart: the item page determines the method
Walmart’s Start an Online Return instructions say available methods vary by item and appear when you start the return. A store return may require no repackaging by you. Other choices can include scheduled pickup, mail or an eligible FedEx drop-off, and the relevant method may require you to repackage the TV.
Walmart says to securely repackage an item when shipping from home or dropping it at a carrier location. If the item is oversized or you cannot take it to a local carrier, its instructions tell you to contact customer care. Use that direction for a large TV rather than trying to force it into a standard drop-off process.
Walmart’s standard return policy recommends keeping manufacturer packaging and the receipt for at least 90 days. That is a recommendation, not a universal statement that every return without a box is prohibited. The order’s offered method and the item’s eligibility still control.

An older Amazon consumer article, Tips for buying a TV on Prime Day, says a customer can ship a TV back, request UPS pickup or use an Amazon return center, and states that the TV needs its original packaging. That general guidance is not a current determination for every order.

For an Amazon purchase, open the current order return flow first. If it demands original packaging or offers no workable method, contact Amazon before packing, transporting or paying for shipment. Ask whether the specific order qualifies for pickup, a drop-off exception or another retailer-arranged solution.
If the retailer approves a replacement box
Do not buy packing materials until the seller confirms that customer-arranged shipping is allowed and that a non-original box is acceptable. If approval is clear, use packaging designed for a television or moving a large flat screen; match the interior dimensions to the set rather than choosing a generic carton by screen size alone.
- Measure the TV. Record the full outside dimensions with the stand removed if the instructions require removal. Compare those measurements with the box’s usable interior, not just its advertised screen-size range.
- Remove detachable parts. Take off the stand and pack its screws, remote, power cord, manuals and other included accessories in a separate, padded bundle. Do not leave hard items loose inside the screen compartment.
- Protect the panel. Cover the screen with a clean, non-abrasive layer and use rigid protection across the face. Keep all pressure off the display; cushioning should absorb movement around the edges rather than press into the panel.
- Guard corners and edges. Fit firm corner and edge protection, then fill side gaps so the television cannot slide. The set should remain immobilized when the closed box is gently tilted.
- Close the box securely. Use the carton’s intended closures and strong packing tape. Do not rely on a thin sheet of bubble wrap or an undersized box as the only protection.
- Photograph the package. Take clear pictures of the powered-off TV, accessories, protective layers, sealed carton and shipping label. Keep the receipt or acceptance scan.
- Use only the approved carrier and service. Follow the retailer’s instructions for label placement, pickup scheduling, declared dimensions and any freight requirement. A carrier’s willingness to accept the carton does not guarantee that the retailer will credit the return.
These are protective packing practices, not a guarantee against transit damage. The retailer’s written instructions and the carrier’s size, weight and packaging restrictions take precedence.

Choose a store return when all of these conditions fit
- The order page explicitly offers a store return for that TV.
- The set can be transported upright and secured without blocking the driver’s view or putting pressure on the panel.
- You have a vehicle large enough to avoid bending, stacking or laying heavy objects against the screen.
- The store has confirmed that it can receive the item without its original carton.
Bring the TV, remote, stand, cables and paperwork together in labeled bags or boxes. Keep the order number and proof of purchase accessible. Call the location first if the online instructions are ambiguous; a store may have item-specific receiving rules.

Ask for pickup when the TV is oversized or heavy
Pickup is usually the practical path when the television cannot be safely carried to a store or local carrier. Tell support that the original box is missing, provide the model or order number and describe whether the TV arrived by truck. Ask who supplies packaging, whether the set must be disconnected or placed at the curb, and what confirmation you will receive at collection. Do not leave an unpackaged TV outside unless the retailer’s written instructions specifically say to do so.
Check eligibility before you dismantle anything
Packaging is only one part of a return decision. Confirm the following in the order details:
- Seller: The retailer’s policy may differ from a marketplace seller’s policy.
- Return window: Verify the final date and the time zone used by the account.
- Condition: Follow any requirement concerning damage, installation, activation or signs of use.
- Included items: Keep the stand, remote, cables, manuals and adapters together where available. The sources cited here do not establish one universal accessory checklist, so follow the order-specific instructions.
- Proof of purchase: Save the receipt, order number, delivery record and any support case number.
- Refund timing: Ask when the refund is triggered—at carrier acceptance, pickup, store inspection or warehouse processing.
If the TV is damaged, missing an accessory or was delivered incorrectly, describe that accurately in the return reason. Do not alter the set or discard parts while waiting for instructions.

The site offers only a shipping label
Stop before printing it if the TV exceeds the label route’s size limit or cannot fit a safe box. Contact support, quote the order number and ask for a store or pickup alternative. For Best Buy, a TV over 50 inches is explicitly excluded from the prepaid-label shipping route.

The site says “repackage” but does not say whether a non-original box is allowed
Ask for written confirmation through chat or email. State the replacement box’s approximate dimensions and whether you will use a purpose-built TV carton. Keep the response with your return records. If the seller will not approve a substitute package, request pickup or an in-store method instead of guessing.
You cannot reach a local carrier
For Walmart returns, the published instructions say to contact customer care when an item is oversized or cannot be taken to a local carrier. Describe the TV’s size and location and ask what collection method is authorized. Do not book an independent freight service unless the retailer agrees to that arrangement and explains reimbursement, labeling and liability.
The original carton was discarded after delivery
That fact alone does not answer whether the return is allowed. Reopen the order flow and use the retailer-specific options above. A store return or retailer pickup may avoid customer packaging altogether, while a mail route may require an approved replacement carton.

A practical decision sequence
- Check the order page. Identify the exact return method and deadline.
- Measure the TV and note its weight. Large-screen limits can rule out ordinary parcel shipping.
- Ask for the least risky approved route. Prefer store return or retailer pickup when available.
- Get packaging approval. Confirm that a replacement box is permitted before purchasing one.
- Pack only after approval. Immobilize the TV, protect the panel and keep accessories together.
- Document handoff. Save photos, pickup records, store receipts and tracking information.
- Monitor the refund. If the expected inspection or refund milestone passes, contact support with the order and handoff records.
The safest answer to “Can I return a TV without its original box?” is therefore conditional: begin with the retailer’s current order instructions, then use an approved store return, pickup or replacement-package shipment. Never infer acceptance from the existence of a generic label or from another retailer’s policy.
