Use a saved PSN backup code first. At the sign-in prompt, choose Trouble Receiving Code?, then Sign In Using a Backup Code and enter one of your 10 single-use codes. If both your phone and backup-code record are unavailable, PlayStation’s documented route is its Online Assistant, where you must verify your identity to restore access. You cannot display backup codes online while locked out.
Choose the recovery route that matches what you still have
Your next step depends on whether you retain a backup code, another device with the same verification method, or neither. Email access by itself does not replace the 2SV challenge; it may help during support’s identity checks, but PlayStation does not describe email-only sign-in as a bypass.

Sign in with a PSN backup code
PlayStation issues 10 backup codes for two-step verification. Each code can be used once, so a code that worked previously cannot be reused. Look for the record you saved when 2SV was enabled: it might be in a password manager, printed notes, a securely stored file, or another place you deliberately recorded it.
- Start signing in to your PlayStation account.
- At the two-step verification prompt, select Trouble Receiving Code?.
- Choose Sign In Using a Backup Code.
- Enter one unused backup code and select Verify.
- Continue the sign-in process.
Do not keep trying old codes after one has been accepted. Mark the successful code as used in your private record so you know which entries remain.

Console-specific sign-in paths
PS5
- Open Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Account, then Sign In.
- At the 2SV screen, enter the verification code or use Trouble Receiving Code? > Sign In Using a Backup Code when that option appears.
PS4
- Open Settings.
- Select Account Management, then Sign In.
- When the 2SV screen appears, press the Triangle button.
- Select Trouble Receiving Code?, choose the applicable reason, and select Sign In Using Backup Code.
- Enter an unused code and continue.
The labels can vary slightly by the screen you reach, but the key choice is always the backup-code sign-in option rather than requesting another SMS.
If another registered device still works
A lost phone does not necessarily lock you out if the same verification method is registered on another device. For example, an authenticator setup or another already-trusted device may still be able to complete the challenge. Sign in on that device, then register a new passkey for the account. This gives you a current sign-in method without waiting for the lost phone.
- Use the other device to complete the normal PSN sign-in challenge.
- Open the account’s security settings after you are signed in.
- Register a new passkey on a device you control.
- Confirm that the new passkey works by signing out only after you have tested it.
If no registered device can complete the challenge, move to the Online Assistant route instead of repeatedly attempting unregistered replacement devices.

- Open PlayStation Support and start the Online Assistant.
- Choose the account-access path that describes your situation, such as not having backup codes or not having access to the phone or mobile number.
- Follow the prompts and provide the account information requested by PlayStation.
- Complete the identity verification process. The exact checks can vary; PlayStation does not publish a universal list of documents or a guaranteed response time.
- Wait for the support process to restore access before changing security settings.
Keep the description precise: explain that the phone or number is unavailable and that you also lack the backup-code record. Avoid opening multiple conflicting recovery requests, because each one can create a separate support history.
Why you cannot simply view the backup codes online
Backup codes are intended to work when the normal 2SV method is unavailable, but they are not an online recovery key that PlayStation will display to a locked-out user. PlayStation’s 2SV guidance states that if you cannot sign in, you cannot check your backup codes online. That is why searching account pages while signed out will not reveal the missing list.
If you regain access on any device, go to the security area and create or record a fresh set according to the options shown there. Keep the record somewhere separate from the phone that generates your normal codes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix a delayed SMS or authenticator code before escalating
If the phone or number is still available but a code has not arrived, treat this as delivery trouble rather than a lost-method recovery.

- Select Resend Code once and wait for the new message instead of entering several older messages.
- Restart the phone.
- Turn off airplane mode and confirm that the device has a mobile-network signal.
- Use the newest code you receive. PlayStation says a verification code is valid for 10 minutes after the sign-in attempt.
- If messages remain unavailable, try the authenticator or other method already registered on the account, if one exists.
A replacement SIM, phone, authenticator app, or security key is not automatically a recovery method. It works only when it preserves a method that was already registered, or after PlayStation has restored the account and you enroll the replacement.
Replace the lost 2SV method after you get in
Using a backup code gets you past the immediate sign-in challenge; it does not update the phone number or authenticator configuration. Once signed in, remove the unavailable method and set up the one you will actually use.
- Open the account’s security settings.
- Disable the existing two-step verification configuration that points to the lost phone or number.
- Activate 2SV again with the new phone or currently supported method.
- Save the newly generated set of 10 backup codes immediately. Each is single-use.
- Register a passkey on a device you control, if the account offers that option.
- Test the new sign-in method before you sign out of every device.
Deactivating and reactivating 2SV generates a new set of backup codes, which is useful when most of the previous codes have already been consumed. Treat the old list as invalid once a new set is issued.
What a replacement phone can and cannot do
When it can help
A replacement phone can receive SMS codes if the same mobile number has been recovered through your carrier. It can also run an authenticator only after that authenticator’s account setup has been restored or the account has been recovered and the app is enrolled again.

When it cannot help
Installing the authenticator app on a new phone does not recreate the lost secret automatically. Likewise, buying a hardware security key does not bypass an existing PSN 2SV challenge unless that key was already registered. These are post-recovery security changes, not guaranteed ways into a locked account.

Best Value
“I have another device with the same verification method.”
Use that device to sign in, then register a new passkey. This is different from installing an unregistered method on a new device.
“I can access my email but nothing else.”
Email access alone is not listed by PlayStation as a 2SV bypass. Use it as part of the information requested during support’s identity-verification process.
Prepare for support without making recovery harder
- Use the same PlayStation account details consistently in the Online Assistant.
- State exactly which items are unavailable: the phone, the mobile number, the backup-code record, or a combination.
- Do not claim that a replacement authenticator or security key was registered if it was not.
- Keep any remaining sign-in session open until you have recorded the account’s current security settings, but do not rely on that session as a permanent recovery method.
- Do not publish backup codes, verification messages, or account details in a public forum.
PlayStation does not promise a universal response time, and its public guidance does not specify one standard set of identity documents for every case. Follow the checks shown for your account and region.
After recovery: prevent the next lockout
- Store the 10 backup codes in a password manager or another secure location that is independent of your phone.
- Keep a private note identifying which codes have been used; never reuse a successful code.
- Maintain a current phone number or other supported verification method.
- Register a passkey on a second device you control, where available.
- Review the account’s security settings after changing phones, phone numbers, or authenticator apps.
- Test the replacement method before deleting the old device or number.
The goal is to maintain two independent ways to prove ownership: a working registered method and a safely stored backup-code record or passkey.
Quick decision checklist
- Do you have one unused backup code? Use Trouble Receiving Code? > Sign In Using a Backup Code.
- Are you signing in on PS5? Use Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Sign In.
- Are you signing in on PS4? Use Settings > Account Management > Sign In, press Triangle, then choose the backup-code option.
- Is another device already registered with the same verification method? Sign in there and register a passkey.
- Is the phone available but the message delayed? Resend, restart, check airplane mode and signal, and use the code within 10 minutes.
- Are both the phone or number and all backup codes unavailable? Use PlayStation’s Online Assistant and complete identity verification.
- After access returns, replace 2SV, generate new backup codes, and add a passkey.
The Bottom Line
A saved backup code is the fastest way back into PSN after losing a 2SV phone. Without both the phone and backup codes, PlayStation requires support-assisted identity verification; once recovered, replace the old 2SV method and store new backup codes separately from your phone.
