If your World of Warcraft gold appears to have vanished, first determine whether it was spent, mailed, deposited, used in a WoW Token transaction, or merely hidden by an addon display problem. Blizzard treats gold missing from every character as a possible account-compromise signal. Only after checking those explanations should you report a suspected bug in the World of Warcraft Bug Report Forum—and Blizzard does not promise that a report will restore the gold.
Start by identifying the scope of the missing gold
Log in to the character where you noticed the discrepancy and compare its current balance with the last amount you remember. Then check another character on the same account. This simple split determines which troubleshooting path makes sense.

Blizzard’s support article uses the phrases “Can’t find my gold” and “My character has less gold than it should.” Those descriptions fit many ordinary transactions, so a balance difference is not by itself proof that game code deleted currency.
Check the ordinary transactions that change a character’s balance
Review expensive Auction House and vendor purchases
Look at anything you bought shortly before noticing the loss. A high-value Auction House purchase can account for a large, sudden reduction. Vendor purchases can do the same, especially when buying several expensive items in succession. Check the item in your bags, bank, or collections so you can match the purchase with the amount missing.

Do not rely only on memory of the final balance. Write down the approximate balance before the purchase, the price shown at confirmation, and the balance afterward. If the numbers line up, the event was a transaction rather than a gold-removal bug.
Inspect mail sent to another character or player
Gold sent through the in-game mail system is no longer part of the sending character’s carried balance. Check the mailboxes for your other characters and for friends or guildmates who may have received a transfer. Include recently sent mail that has not yet been collected; the recipient’s mailbox is a separate location from the character’s visible purse.
If you use multiple realms, verify the realm before comparing balances. A transfer to a character on another realm can look like unexplained account-wide loss when you are checking the wrong realm’s characters.

A deposit into a guild bank reduces the character’s personal gold. Ask an authorized guild member to confirm recent deposits or review the guild-bank history if your permissions allow it. A guild-bank deposit can be easy to overlook when it happened during a group activity or administrative task.

Look for a WoW Token purchase
A Token purchase can change the amount of gold you can access or spend. Blizzard’s Token guidance says that a purchase made from the character-select screen can draw on characters’ gold on one realm, including gold held in mail. It also states that “The system will not recognize gold in your Warband bank.”
That rule matters when your expected available amount includes Warband-bank gold. The Token system may legitimately report less available gold than the total you can see across all storage locations. Token rules can differ by game mode and region, so use Blizzard’s current Using a WoW Token guidance for the rules that apply to your account. Treat the rule as an explanation of Token availability, not as proof that a balance bug occurred.
Test for an addon display problem
Blizzard lists addons as another possible cause of an incorrect displayed balance. An addon can show stale or misread data while the game’s underlying balance is unchanged. Compare the amount shown by the addon with the standard Blizzard interface after temporarily disabling the addon or loading the character without it. The official missing-gold guidance identifies the display possibility but does not prescribe one particular addon procedure, so use the least disruptive test available to you.

Record the balance from the default interface before changing settings. That gives you a reliable comparison if the addon and the built-in display disagree.

What to do when every character is missing gold
Blizzard’s warning is explicit: “If you are missing all the gold in all your characters, your account might have been compromised.” This is a security signal, not a reason to assume that an addon is misreporting one character.
- Stop making additional transfers or purchases while you establish what changed. More activity can make the timeline harder to reconstruct.
- Check the balances of every character and note the realms involved. Capture the approximate time and amount of the loss, along with any unfamiliar transactions.
- Open Blizzard’s hacked-account guidance and follow its account-recovery and security instructions. Use the official support path rather than attempting to recover the currency through a third-party service.
- After securing the account, review mail, guild-bank activity, Auction House activity, vendor purchases, and Token activity again. An intruder can use any of those systems, so a security response and a transaction review are complementary steps.
Do not describe an all-character loss as “just a display bug” until the account-security checks are complete. The scope of the loss is the reason Blizzard directs players toward compromised-account guidance.
Separate a software bug from a trade scam or an item problem
A suspected game bug
A bug is a failure of the game to apply or display a transaction as designed. Examples include a balance that changes without a matching purchase, transfer, deposit, or Token event, or a balance that remains wrong in the default interface after relogging. These observations justify a bug report, but they do not establish that Blizzard will reimburse the currency.
A trade scam
Trade-scam cases follow a different support policy. Blizzard’s Trade Scams article says, “Customer Support does not restore items or gold in these situations.” The statement applies to trade scams; it should not be stretched into a promise or denial for every unrelated software problem. Blizzard may take action against a reported account when it verifies a scam, but that enforcement possibility is not a gold-restoration service.

If another player persuaded you to hand over gold or items and then failed to deliver what was promised, report the conduct as a scam rather than labeling it a game bug. Preserve the names, time, realm, chat context, and trade details for the report.
An item that was sold, destroyed, or disenchanted
Blizzard’s Item Restoration tool is for eligible items that were sold, destroyed, or disenchanted. It is not a mechanism for restoring gold that was spent, mailed, deposited, or lost in a suspected currency bug. Sending every missing-gold case to Item Restoration can waste time and create the wrong expectation about what the tool does.

If the transaction checks, Token rules, account review, and display test do not explain the discrepancy, report it in the World of Warcraft Bug Report Forum. Blizzard’s Token guidance directs players there for potential bugs or feedback about how the system should work.

- Character name and realm
- Approximate date and time, including your time zone if known
- Gold balance before and after the event, with the amounts you observed
- The action immediately before the change, such as buying an Auction House item, collecting mail, depositing in a guild bank, or using a Token
- Whether the same balance appears in the default Blizzard interface and with addons disabled
- Any error message, disconnect, lag, or unusual interface behavior
- Whether other characters are affected and whether they are on the same realm
Describe what you observed rather than asserting an unverified cause. “My balance fell from approximately X to Y after collecting mail at about 21:00 UTC; no matching purchase appears” is more useful than “the game deleted my gold.” Do not include passwords, authentication codes, payment information, or other account secrets in a forum post.
A bug report helps Blizzard investigate a reproducible problem, but the cited guidance does not say that filing one restores lost gold. Keep your report focused on the behavior and retain your own notes in case support or a later update asks for clarification.
A practical decision path
- One character affected: check Auction House and vendor purchases, outgoing mail, guild-bank deposits, Token activity, and addon display differences.
- Several characters on one realm affected: check realm-specific Token availability, character and mailbox gold, and any shared transactions before escalating.
- All characters affected: treat the event as a possible compromise and follow Blizzard’s hacked-account guidance immediately.
- No explanation remains: document the timeline and post in the World of Warcraft Bug Report Forum.
- The loss came from a player trade: use the trade-scam reporting route; do not expect the Item Restoration tool to replace gold.
This sequence prevents two common errors: reporting a normal transaction as a confirmed bug, and delaying account-security action because the loss was assumed to be a display problem.

A matching purchase, mail record, guild-bank entry, or Token rule can explain why the visible balance changed. An addon mismatch can explain why the number looked wrong. None of those checks, by themselves, proves that Blizzard’s currency system is faultless in every case; they simply eliminate the documented, common explanations first.
Conversely, an unexplained balance difference is not proof of an account compromise. The strongest security warning in Blizzard’s guidance is the pattern of missing gold across all characters. That pattern should determine your priority: secure the account first, then investigate the transaction history.
There is no published service figure in the cited guidance promising a percentage of successful recoveries or a standard response time for bug-reported gold. Plan around investigation rather than reimbursement, and keep your own transaction notes until the issue is resolved.
